Home Depot's Bernie Marcus blasts media's COVID-19 coverage
Recommendable! Indeed the mass media are guilty of stoking the mass panic and hysteria in the wake of Covid-19, a relatively harmless virus!
"... the media is at fault for creating panic and division amid the coronavirus pandemic. ... "My age bracket is really the problem," Marcus, who is 91 years old, said. "If we take care of my age bracket, that is 70 or above, I think that we can end a lot of the problems that are out there. People that are 70 or above have to be so careful because you are compromised in many different ways. But we're only a small portion of the population, and we're closing down everybody in addition to the schools.""

Mehrwertsteuer-Protest: Restaurant verkauft Erdnüsse für 26 Euro
Bravo! Sehr empfehlenswert!

Recommendable! Don't you wish you had a memory like that! When will scientists equip humans with such memory capabilities be it via genetics or via human computer interface or both?
"The concept of savant syndrome dates back to 1887, when physician J. Langdon Down coined the term “idiot savant” for persons who showed low IQ but superlative artistic, musical, mathematical, or other skills. ... Nine months after Peek was born in 1951, a doctor told his family “that Kim was retarded, and they should put him in an institution and forget about him,” ... “Another doctor suggested a lobotomy [aka quackery], which fortunately they didn’t carry out.” Instead, his parents raised him at home in Utah where he raced through books, memorizing them. Despite his feats of memory and other abilities, such as performing impressive calculations in his head, Peek never learned to carry out many everyday tasks, such as dressing himself. MRIs would later reveal that Peek had abnormalities in the left hemisphere of his brain and was missing a corpus callosum, which controls communication between the two cerebral hemispheres. ..."

Researchers Invent Technology To Remedy 3D Printing's 'Weak Spot'
Good news!
"Finding a way to remedy the inadequate bonding between printed layers has been an ongoing quest in the 3D printing field ... printed parts are weaker than identical parts made by injection molding ... To promote inter-layer bonding, the team turned to carbon nanotubes. Since these carbon particles heat in response to electrical currents, the researchers coated the surface of each printed layer with these nanomaterials. Similar to the heating effect of microwaves on food, the team found that these carbon nanotube coatings can be heated using electric currents, allowing the printed layers to bond together. ... With the plasma technology and the carbon nanotube-coated thermoplastic material in place, ... researchers added both these components to conventional 3D printers."

Software developed by SMU stops ransomware attacks
Good news! Sounds very promising and will hopefully defeat many criminals!
"The FBI estimates that ransomware victims have paid hackers more than $140 million in the last six-and-a-half years."
And this estimate is only for the U.S. I presume.
"Unlike existing methods, such as antivirus software or other intrusion detection systems, SMU’s new software works even if the ransomware is new and has not been used before.
SMU’s detection method is known as sensor-based ransomware detection ... The new software also can scan a computer for ransomware much faster than existing software ... SMU’s software functions by searching for small, yet distinguishable changes in certain sensors that are found inside computers to detect when unauthorized encryptions are taking place. ... When attackers encrypt files, certain circuits inside the computer have specific types of power surges as files are scrambled. Computer sensors that measure temperature, power consumption, voltage levels, and other characteristics can detect these specific types of surges ... Southern Methodist University (SMU) has filed a patent application for this technique"

Good news! Looks like our grandchildren will not have to worry about heart muscle diseases anymore!
"In May last year, the men were injected with heart muscle cells derived from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, the surgeon told Nature — the first known clinical application of iPS-cell technology for treating damaged hearts. ... In January, a cardiac surgeon in Japan, Yoshiki Sawa, introduced iPS-derived cardiomyocytes designed to treat heart disease into a patient — which media reported at the time was a world first. His team is using an alternative approach in which sheets of cells are grafted onto the heart rather than injected into the organ."

SARS-CoV-2-Fighting T Cells Found in Recovered Patients
Good news! Why should it be different from influenza or common cold?
"The authors also tested blood samples collected between 2015 and 2018 to see whether people who were never exposed to SARS-CoV-2 might nevertheless have some immunity to it. Waldemar presents a number of very interesting points in his first part:
- Very early depictions of Jesus Christ showed him as young, attractive man without a beard, sometimes even feminine. Only several hundred years later was he painted like Zeus with a full beard and towering like a god on a throne
- There is a lot about the secret language of early Christians
- Early christian churches were home churches not basilicas or cathedrals

Some lessons of SARS CoV-2/Covid-19
The lessons are:
- Many so called experts are rather idiot savants from the ivory tower and they are extremely risk averse. Plus, they produced a cacophony of ambiguous or contradictory advice
- The new religion of science failed us spectacularly. As Socrates reminded us and scientists over 2000 years ago "I neither know nor think that I know". Scientists are famous for frequently ignoring or grossly underestimating human adaptability and ingenuity
- Computer models are terribly unreliable (this phenomenon also contributes to the Global Warming Hoax (a.k.a. climate change). Sometimes obviously sensational model results were not sufficiently questioned!
- Too many politicians have become uncritical servants to these so called experts as if demigods instead of relying more on their common sense and sound skepsis
- Individual liberty suffered severely and was harshly restricted by many governments measures facing a rather harmless virus. Most citizens accepted this without protest. Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. Do we need more evidence?
- There are lies, damned lies, and statistics. This time was no different!
- Western media largely failed to investigate and report the issues as they unfolded

On the Taiping Rebellion or Civil War
If you want to understand the heavy suppression of Uyghurs and Falun Gong under the Communist Party of China, the you may want to study e.g. the the 14 year long Taiping Rebellion or Taiping Civil War. However, this is no justification for what the CPC is doing!
This was also a total war. "it ranks as one of the bloodiest wars in human history, the bloodiest civil war, and the largest conflict of the 19th century. Estimates of the war dead range from 10–30 million. 30 million people fled the conquered regions to foreign settlements or other parts of China. ... and it involved every province of China proper except Gansu." Until recently, I was not aware of the substantial influence of Christianity on this Rebellion that was led by the self proclaimed brother of Jesus Christ.

What else: "With the help of a tool called PyTorch JIT, Facebook engineers migrated from a training-oriented setup in PyTorch, Facebook’s machine learning framework, to a heavily inference-optimized environment. The latter number is 250 and 280 for the UK and Canada respectively. ... Similarly, cancer-survival rates are considerably higher in the US than in other countries."

What Michael Moore’s new film gets wrong about renewable energy
Of course, it would not take long before critics come out against Michael Moore's latest film Planet of the Humans. Although, my impression is the environmentalism industry and its believers rather treat this film damnatio memoriae or blissful ignorance!
Following is also a rather disingenuous pamphlet. Just to give on example:
"Meanwhile, solar cell technology is advancing rapidly. Thin-film solar cells involve layers of light-absorbing semiconductors such as cadmium telluride or copper indium gallium selenide that are deposited on glass, metal or plastic. This technology uses only a fraction of the silicon needed to make the thick silicon wafers of a standard photovoltaic cell. Thin-film cells also eliminate the use of dangerous hydrofluoric acid to clean the wafers."
As if cadmium telluride or indium gallium selenide are more environmentally friendly to mine and produce than silicon. What about the well known toxicity of e.g. cadmium?

Following is also a rather disingenuous pamphlet. Just to give on example:

The School Closures Are a Big Threat to the Power of Public Schools
Very recommendable! The headline is spot on! Privatize public education! Get the government out of the way!
"Like their lower-income counterparts, middle class parents have long been happy to take advantage of the schools as a child-care service. But the non-educational amenities didn't stop there. Middle-class parents especially have long embraced the idea that billions of dollars spent on school music programs, school sports, and other extracurriculars were all absolutely essential to student success. Sports provided an important social function for both the students and the larger community."
Thus citizens got very complacent about trusting their children with government run, labor union dominated schools!

Have you ever heard of this north African Queen?

Aircraft spies gravity waves being sucked into Antarctica’s polar vortex
More evidence that the Global Warming Hoax (aka climate change) is real!
"The Southern Ocean is famously stormy, home to waves taller than telephone poles. Yet 50 kilometers overhead, the weather is just as tempestuous, if less obviously so. Powerful waves in the air break and crash, dumping energy into the stratosphere and disrupting winds that help control the climate.
For about 2 decades, researchers have known that a region near 60° South, along the Drake Passage between the tip of South America and Antarctica, is the planet’s hot spot for these so-called gravity waves. They have long suspected that the waves (not to be confused with the gravitational waves rippling through space) are launched by the mountains of the southern Andes and the Antarctic Peninsula, which jut thousands of meters into westerly winds. But puzzlingly, the hot spot lies hundreds of kilometers away from the mountains. Now, a high-altitude aircraft has traced newborn gravity waves rising from the mountains and bending, or refracting, toward that hot spot.
The phenomenon helps explain why climate models predict unrealistically cold temperatures over the South Pole."
There are many other natural phenomena that climate models do not reflect or model incorrectly! Perhaps, the above provided explanation or, shall we say, conjecture is incorrect or not the whole story!

Global firms push US to research 5G tech that would minimise Chinese influence and allow multiple vendors
Recommendable! Not sure, I understand this move completely, but it seems to be important. E.g. how much can software replace specialized (proprietary, expensive) hardware?
"Thirty-one companies announced on Tuesday that they had formed the group, called the Open RAN Policy Coalition, to change the way the cell tower radio access network (RAN) works in an effort to support virtual, software-based 5G networks. RAN is part of a telecommunications system that connects devices to other parts of a network through cableless radio connections. Opening up RAN means the 5G infrastructure can be moved away from the need for expensive proprietary hardware."

UCLA scientists create first roadmap of human skeletal muscle development
Good news!
"An interdisciplinary team of researchers ... has developed a first-of-its-kind roadmap of how human skeletal muscle develops, including the formation of muscle stem cells. ... identified various cell types present in skeletal muscle tissues, from early embryonic development all the way to adulthood. Focusing on muscle progenitor cells, which contribute to muscle formation before birth, and muscle stem cells, which contribute to muscle formation after birth and to regeneration from injury throughout life, the group mapped out how the cells’ gene networks — which genes are active and inactive — change as the cells mature."

Google Apps Script Annoyances
Posted: 5/14/2020
The annoyances are:
- Extremely primitive IDE (Integrated Development Environment)
- Extremely primitive autocomplete assistance
- You need to install an Chrome Browser add-on to increase the puny default font size of the editor! This bloody add-on then shows up in every browser instance!! Grrrr!
- The automatic indentation support is extremely primitive!
Excuse me! What! My script was not running longer than 5 minutes, probably much less! It appears if a loop has more than about 1000 iterations this error kicks in. The error message does not even bother to indicate whether the maximum execution time is configurable or not! This is lousy!
More annoyances will be added as I encounter them!

Staatspolitisch bedenklich

Trump to End Federal Retirement Investments in Chinese Equities

Coronavirus shuts down U.S. Internal Revenue Service
Since my wife and I have yet to receive any stimulus check, we began to investigate!
IRS provides services only online. The 800-829-1040 phone no. for individual filers is useless thanks to the pandemic. Reduced staffing would not allow the IRS to answer taxpayer questions! Ludicrous!

Very nice if it worked! My wife and I tried separately multiple times using different ways to enter the requested information. Nada! Your entered information does not match our records! What exactly did not match IRS records, the IRS would not tell? We are annual tax return filers!
So much for federal incompetence!
