The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed a new rule that would allow civilian aircraft to fly faster than Mach 1 over the continental US

Good news! Long overdue!

Flying again faster across the US thanks to President Trump!

"The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed a new rule that would allow civilian aircraft to fly faster than Mach 1 over the United States if their sonic booms stay below a strict noise threshold at ground level. If finalized, the rule, along with another planned rule that would set landing and takeoff noise standards for supersonic aircraft, would end the 1970s ban on overland civilian supersonic flight. ..."

President Trump lifts US supersonic flight ban from 1973 'Making Aviation Great Again'

Good news! Let the boom begin! I bet current or new technologies can better handle the boom!

"On Friday, President Trump signed an executive order telling the FAA to lift its 52-year ban on supersonic flight over the US and told the FAA to devise a scheme to limit noise pollution from such aircraft.

Supersonic flight has been banned over the US for civilian aircraft since 1973 after testing showed the noise it created was too disruptive, breaking windows in some cases.  ..."

Will supersonic flights across the US soon be allowed?

Good news! I also believe that the ban imposed in the early 1970s were an overreaction to e.g. the 1973 oil embargo imposed by the OPEC countries.

With President Trump in office this might have a chance to become reality!

"U.S. lawmakers introduced the Supersonic Aviation Modernization Act in a bid to revise the FAA’s 52-year ban on supersonic flight over U.S. soil. The timing could be crucial for startup Boom Supersonic, which has made progress in developing next-generation supersonic aircraft  ..."

Rocket plane makes first civil supersonic flight since Concorde's last flight in 2003

Good news! Next time you eat a Kiwi ... 😊

"
  • The fastest aircraft ever to climb from ground level to 20 km.
  • First New Zealand-designed and -built aircraft to fly supersonic.
  • Highest altitude achieved by an aircraft flown from New Zealand.
..."

Rocket plane makes first civil supersonic flight since Concorde "The rebirth of commercial supersonic flight has kind of, sort of come to pass as Dawn Aerospace announces that its 16-ft (4.8-m) Mk-II Aurora rocket-powered aircraft broke the sound barrier with a speed of Mach 1.1 on November 12, 2024."

Look how small this rocket is. A lot smaller than a Concorde! 😊

NASA and Lockheed Martin reveal 'supersonic' jet that could be next generation of commercial air travel with sonic thump

Good news! Supersonic without sonic boom? How boring! 😊

"NASA and Lockheed Martin officially unveiled the agency's X-59 quiet supersonic aircraft on Friday. The experimental aircraft could represent the next phase in the evolution of commercial air travel, according to the agency's recent release. It is suggested that the new aircraft can travel "faster than the speed of sound," reaching a maximum speed of 925 miles per hour. ...
The X-59 is at the center of NASA’s Quesst mission, which focuses on providing data to help regulators reconsider rules that prohibit commercial supersonic flight over land. For 50 years, the U.S. and other nations have prohibited such flights because of the disturbance caused by loud, startling sonic booms on the communities below. The X-59 is expected to fly at 1.4 times the speed of sound, or 925 mph. Its design, shaping and technologies will allow the aircraft to achieve these speeds while generating a quieter sonic thump. ..."

American Airlines puts down deposit for 20 Boom supersonic aircraft

Is this the comeback of civilian commercial supersonic flight?

"... American Airlines and Boom Supersonic signed an agreement for the airline to put down a non-returnable deposit towards the purchase of 20 Overture supersonic aircraft, with the option for an additional 40. ...
Scheduled to make its maiden flight in 2026 and enter service by 2029, Overture boasts a new hull and wing designed to reduce the infamous sonic boom to an acceptable thud. It will have a range of 4,250 nm (4,890 miles, 7,870 km) and will be able to carry up to 80 passengers at speeds of Mach 1.7 over water and Mach 0.94 over land, allowing it to fly from Tokyo to Seattle in as little as four and a half hours. ..."

Half plane, half rocket, this Chinese supersonic jet could fly Beijing to New York in only an hour

Air travel may never be the same again! And China is maybe running the show! Western countries made a huge mistake to mostly abandon supersonic jets for exaggerated environmental reasons etc.

"Chinese company Space Transportation wants to take a jab at the growing space tourism market with a winged rocket capable of suborbital travel. The reusable space plane could take wealthy tourists to the edge of space then land them on the other side of the world in no time. A trip from Beijing to New York would only take an hour. Space Transportation was founded in 2018 and last August it managed to raise $46 million to develop its flagship supersonic spaceplane...."

Flight Times May Soon Be Cut in Half with new supersonic jet

Recommendable! Unfortunately, I did not have the time to read the whole article! Let it boom!

It also contains a paragraph why the British-French Concorde failed! Article omits the other famous failure in government designed supersonic jets: Soviet Tupolev of the 1970s

"... By contrast, private companies can’t get off the ground without thinking deeply about customer demands and economic feasibility. ..."

The Return Of Civilian Supersonic Flight By Early 2020s

Posted: 7/9/2017

Never quite understood, why there were only two civilian supersonic airplanes flown commercially since the invention of jet engines (i.e. the soviet Tupolev TU-144 and the western Concorde). Let’s be sarcastic for a moment and blame the aggressive, intolerant environmentalists for that.

There were recently several news reports about plans to build two different new civilian supersonic airplanes. Apparently, big players like Airbus, Lockheed, Virgin Atlantic, NASA and small startups like Boom are in the game. Read e.g. here, here, here

The supersonic boom may not be such a problem anymore with latest technological improvements.

Looking forward to buy my first ticket for a flight around the world in less than 10 hours! :-)

Successor To SR-71 At Mach 6

Trigger

Just perused a lengthy article in Aviation Week that claims that Lockheed is working on a successor to the SR-71 Blackbird with a top speed of Mach 6, two times as fast as SR-71. That is awesome! There has been such a long pause on supersonic flight.

I have seen the SR-71 at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. As a teenager, I was in awe by the story of this incredible plane. Just an amazing bird!

Co-Pilot Wanted

I wish Lockheed best of luck and success! Sign me up! Need for speed is addictive!
