The immigrant to migrant switch in public discourse. Words matter!

In recent years news media and other sources have avoided the term immigrant and substituted it with migrant. Immigrants and migrants are not the same!

Migration is more commonly associated with animals (animal migration) not humans. Humans rather migrate and settle.

According to Google search: "Migration is the broad, overarching term for any movement of people (or animals) from one location to another, whether across international borders or within a single country.
Immigration is a more specific type of migration that refers exclusively to the act of permanently moving to and settling in a foreign country."

A nice switch in terminology most likely triggered by some ideology!

Are not e.g. gypsies or cross border commuter workers considered to be migrants?

Today, China, Russia, Myanmar, and Belarus still count for the world’s largest prison populations of journalists.

Just a reminder at the end of 2025 or the end of the first quarter of the 21st century!

"710 journalists spent time in prison this year, and more than 500 will be spending the end-of-year holidays there too, according to our latest figures."

Exiled, convicted, surveilled: how Russia has prosecuted nearly 70 journalists beyond its borders in the past two years

Journalism in the empire of Putin the Terrible!

Exiled, convicted, surveilled: how Russia has prosecuted nearly 70 journalists beyond its borders | RSF "Reporters Without Borders (RSF) warns of Russia’s growing use of in absentia convictions against exiled Russian journalists and foreign media professionals. This repressive legal tactic is used to intimidate journalists, block their return to Russia and pressure their relatives,  and has become commonplace since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Over 44 months, nearly 70 journalists have been targeted, according to data cross-checked by RSF and the Justice for Journalists Foundation (JFJ), a British charity."

Israeli attack killed five journalists in Gaza. Really!

Bad news! It is probably too early for the facts regarding this case to come out.

Are some of the journalists in Gaza Strip actually Hama terrorists? Possibly! To pose as a journalist is a nice cover.

Did Al Jazeera vet this journalist carefully? Since when was he a journalist of Al Jazeera? Etc.

There also claims that the IDF killed up to 200 journalists in the Gaza Strip. Sounds incredible! Further investigations into this claim are recommended.

Caveat: I am not familiar with the details of this case.

"... five journalists working for Al Jazeera, including prominent correspondent Anas al-Sharif, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a tent outside al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the strike, stating it targeted al-Sharif, alleging he was a "terrorist" and head of a Hamas militant cell involved in rocket attacks." (Google search result)

RSF alarmed about fate of 14 other, detained journalists after the execution of Turki al-Jasser in Saudi Arabia

How bad is the situation for journalists in Saudi Arabia?

The Wikipedia entry on this journalist is extremely thin and says little about his journalistic career.

Was he a terrorism sponsor or a journalist or both?

Of course, the RSF wants to compare the death of this journalist with the killing of the  celebrity journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"... Before his murder, Turki al-Jasser was a jailed journalist. He had been imprisoned for running the news blog Al-Mashhad Al-Saudi (“The Saudi Scene”), where he regularly addressed social issues such as women’s rights and the Palestinian cause. Several of his fellow journalists remain behind bars — often mistreated or denied fair trials — for their reporting. Some have been imprisoned since 2012. Others were arrested during the wave of detentions that preceded the rise to power of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2017. Their fate now lies in the hands of an increasingly repressive regime. ..."

"Turki al-Jasser was the founder of the news blog Al-Mashhad Al-Saudi and also contributed to the now-closed newspaper Al-Taqrir. He was arrested in 2018 and sentenced to death on charges of terrorism and high treason, based on writings he was accused of authoring. He was executed on 14 June 2025 after 7 years imprisonment. ..."

"The Ministry of Interior announced today [7/14/2025] the execution of Turki bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al-Jasser, a Saudi national, after he was proven to have committed several terrorist crimes, including high treason, communicating with foreign parties to harm the Kingdom's security, and receiving sums of money to finance terrorist activities aimed at undermining internal security, national unity, and the country's stability. ..."

Portraits from Saudi Arabia: RSF alarmed about fate of detained journalists after execution of Turki al-Jasser | RSF "The execution of journalist Turki al-Jasser by the Saudi regime has raised serious concerns about the fate of other media professionals wrongly detained in Saudi Arabia for doing their job. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has profiled their cases and calls for their immediate release."

UNESCO Director-General condemns the execution of journalist Turki al-Jasser in Saudi Arabia "The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the execution of journalist Turki al-Jasser in Saudi Arabia, on 14 June."

RSF exfiltrates Ekaterina Barabash: the Russian journalist’s escape from Putin the Terrible

Good news! As if the Soviet Union never disappeared! Greetings from the Gulag!

"On 5 May, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) held a press conference at its headquarters to present Ekaterina Barabash to the press.
The Russian journalist and film critic disappeared from Moscow, where she was under house arrest, on 21 April and is now in Paris.
Exhausted but free, Ekaterina Barabash recounted her escape from the Russian authorities, who put her on their wanted list as she faced up to ten years in prison. RSF coordinated the operation and ensured her safe passage to France. ..."

National Review: Trump Is the New FDR. Really!

Apparently, the National Review is also suffering from the Trump Derangement Syndrome!

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a big government socialist who did not want to quit when it was time like the senile, demented, and corrupt 46th President later!

Caveat: I did not read the article. The headline was bad enough!

They say truth is the first casualty of war! For sure, being a journalist in a war zone is a dangerous job.

"Their names were Ali Taimeh and Ibrahim Muhareb, Win Htut Oo and Htet Myat Thu, Hero Bahaden and Gülistan Tara, and Ryan Evans. They were journalists or media professionals who worked in Gaza, Myanmar, Kurdistan and Ukraine. What did they have in common? Peter Doocy confronts KJP with evidence of coordinated attempt to protect Kamala Harris from 'border czar' record. Really!

Peter Doocy like other permanent White House journalists is a doozy!

All he essentially does he sits in the White House press room and asks some questions. I am not aware he does any serious investigative journalism.

To challenge the charming and naive Karine Jean Pierre is like child's play!

Under Mexican President AMLO Mexico has continued to be the country with the highest murder rate of journalists

Bad news! Some jobs are more dangerous than others depending on country.

"... In the almost six years that he has been president, at least 37 journalists have been murdered and five have disappeared. ...
Aside from the appalling death toll, no reform of the system for protecting journalists has been implemented despite the recommendations in this area from organisations such as Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Worse still, the president has continued to express hostility towards the work of the media on many occasions, in stark contrast to his promises. ..."

Shock as AP Photo of Shani Louk's Corpse on October 7 Wins 'Picture of the Year' by an American journalism school. Really!

Very disgusting and appalling! To celebrate the crimes of cowardly Barbarians, killers and mass murderers is a very serious failure of judgment!

Just imagine just for one moment you were the parent of this young woman!

Who is this photographer anyway, who had apparently advanced notice or was he part of the cowardly killers and mass murders. Possibly, a war criminal himself? If so, he probably should be indicted! Then he can perhaps explain that he only took these pictures as evidence for the criminal proceedings of these coward killers and mass murderers.

Just see how one of these cowardly Barbarians has his boots on the body of the young woman! Absolutely horrifying!

Shock as AP Photo of Shani Louk's Corpse Wins 'Picture of the Year' Critics reacted in alarm this week after the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri awarded the Associated Press with a “Pictures of the Year” award for photos including an Israeli victim of Hamas.

Reporters without Borders: In Gaza, 56 journalists were killed since the Israel-Hamas war. Really!

It appears not only the so called Hamas officials release what are most likely inflated "civilian" casualty numbers which are the eagerly licked up by Western media and others without questioning!

Is it possible that some of the killed so called journalists in Gaza were also Hamas members involved in combat?

RSF’s 2023 Round-up: 45 journalists killed in the line of duty worldwide – a drop despite the tragedy in Gaza | RSF According to the annual round-up compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the number of journalists killed worldwide in connection with their work (45 as of 1 December 2023) is the lowest since 2002, despite the war in the Middle East. In Gaza, at least 13 journalists have been killed because of their work as journalists since the war began between Israel and Hamas, a total that rises to 56 if we include all journalists killed in the Gaza Strip, whether or not in the line of their work. Worldwide, 521 journalists are currently detained on arbitrary grounds linked to their profession (down 8.4% from 2022).
