Deer urine glows like holiday lights in the breeding season thanks to UV-induced photoluminescence

Headline of the day! Amazing stuff! Don't be a deer in the dark!

So not only the smell of urine is important!

What is kind of odd is the article about the research mentions urine explicitly, while the abstract of the study does not mention urine at all. Were the scientists embarrassed? 😊

"When a male white-tailed deer walks through a forest in rutting season, it makes itself known. It tears off tree bark with its antlers and rubs its forehead glands on the tree. Then, it scrapes a hole in the ground and pees in it. The display asserts the buck’s dominance and advertises that he’s looking for a mate. Now, new research suggests that in the twilight hours when the deer are most active, these rubs and scrapes, known as signposts, glow in a bluish tinge other deer may see, scientists report this month in Ecology and Evolution. ...

The glow is an example of photoluminescence, a property widely found in nature in which organic material absorbs light and re-emits it at longer wavelengths—shifting ultraviolet (UV) light into our visible range, for example. Most research has focused on the photoluminescent properties of the animals themselves, but DeRose-Broeckert and his team wanted to see whether it also appeared in the environment.

In the Whitehall Forest in Georgia, he and his colleagues searched for wild white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) signposts during two periods leading up to the breeding season. They scanned signposted trees, the ground, and urine with UV light in two wavelengths thought to be relatively more abundant at dawn and dusk. Then they measured the light that came back, focusing in on wavelengths that would be picked up by receptors in deer eyes. In total, the team analyzed 146 signposts, including 20 urine patches.

The signposts—both rubbed trees and urine—lit up in a way that would pop out to deer in the dark, the team found. “The urine definitely glows, it looks like spilled white paint,” ... “It’s pretty striking.” To the deer, the trees and urine may appear as glowing patches of turquoise-blue, he says. ..."

From the abstract:
"Ultraviolet (UV) induced photoluminescence is widespread in Mammalia; however, its function(s) remain unclear. Most of the research to date has focused on the surface expression of photoluminescence (e.g., pelage), described qualitatively.
Here, we report a quantitative assessment of photoluminescence of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus, herein deer) used for marking signposts.
We analyzed 146 signposts, including 109 antler rubs on trees and 37 scent-marking scrapes. We compared the spectra of signposts to the spectra of surrounding environmental features elicited by exposure to excitation lights peaking at 365 and 395 nm.
Signposts showed significant contrast when compared to environmental backgrounds (p < 0.001), and the resulting photoluminescence would be visible to deer based on previously described deer visual capabilities.
This research is the first quantitative description of the functional use of environmental photoluminescence by a mammal and gives new perspective about how white-tailed deer perceive their environment and communicate."

475 people were arrested yesterday in an immigration raid at a Hyundai battery plant under construction in Georgia

What! Incredible! Are South Korean companies a little bit loose on following US laws when operating in the US.

"They had illegally crossed the border, entered through a visa waiver program that prohibited working or overstayed their visas, the Department of Homeland Security said. No criminal charges were filed as of today, and the investigation remains ongoing. More than 300 people were South Korean nationals, according to an official from that country. Seoul protested the action and said it was trying to secure their release. Hyundai has pledged $26 billion in U.S. investments in recent weeks."

"The U.S. carried out its largest single-site immigration raid ever, detaining nearly 500 foreigners at a Hyundai Motor battery plant in Georgia and injecting fresh risk to overseas firms eyeing American investment to satisfy President Trump’s trade demands.

Some 475 individuals were arrested Thursday at a factory under construction near Savannah, Ga., set to make electric-vehicle batteries in a joint venture between Hyundai and fellow South Korean firm LG Energy Solution. The broader $7.6 billion EV-production site there represents the largest manufacturing project in Georgia’s history. ..."

A commercial nuclear reactor has begun testing fuel enriched up to 6 percent in the US for the first time

Good news!

"For the first time in the United States, a commercial nuclear reactor has begun testing fuel enriched up to 6 percent uranium-235, exceeding the industry standard of 3 to 5 percent. More concentrated fuel allows reactors to operate longer before refueling, generate more power, and produce less waste."

"... The advanced fuel – aimed to improve fuel cycle safety and reduce operational costs – was developed under the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Accident Tolerant Fuel Program.

According to the Alabama-based nuclear energy power company, the higher enrichment levels make it possible for the fuel to last for a significantly extended period of time while simultaneously operating at increased power levels. ..."

Several hundreds of thousands of Non-citizen Voting Could Affect Outcome in These 7 Swing States

Mind boggling!

Add to this the enormously flawed and inaccurate voter rolls in many states. I recently blogged here, here about it.

Remember, in Arizona less than 12,000 votes determined the winner in the 2020 presidential elections.

"Noncitizens number in the hundreds of thousands in each of the seven most fiercely contested battleground states expected to decide the Nov. 5 presidential election, and research suggests more than 1 million of them could vote nationally if past voting patterns continue. ...

Of the seven battleground states,
Georgia has the largest number of adult noncitizens at 787,588 ...

North Carolina follows with 726,079 noncitizens, ...

The third highest number of noncitizens in a battleground state is
Arizona, with 611,717 ages 18 or older. ...

Pennsylvania has 516,123 voting-age noncitizens ...
Michigan has 271,138
Nevada is next with 258,736 and
Wisconsin, with 129,600, has the smallest number of noncitizens among the seven swing states ..."

Trump’s attacks on Georgia's governor Kemp (R) are worrying the GOP about his chances in the battleground state.

Bad news! Certainly not helpful!

"Donald Trump has again taken to maligning fellow Republican Brian Kemp, reviving a feud from the 2020 election, when he blamed Kemp for not overturning state results. Two major political handicappers now rate Georgia as a tossup after previously rating it “Lean Republican.” The saga has been a reminder of how Trump nurses a grudge and often veers off script, adding to worries among allies that he can sometimes be his own worst enemy. Two very young female Georgia school employees indicted of sexually abusing male students

Another Me Too event in the age of gender equality! This is not the first time I blog about this subject!

Some people might say or think what is the crime here. Perhaps the boys enjoyed it! But these boys were taken advantage of and may live for the rest of their lives with this experience.

"... indicted on Thursday on two counts of sexual contact by employee or agent in the first degree for having sex with two different male students between October 2021 and January 2022 ... [the other one] was indicted on one count of the same charge for having sex with a different male student between October 2021 and January 2022. ..."

Punishing Heat in southern U.S. Prisons not due to climate change. Really!

Still better than capital or corporal punishment or? Pardon my inexcusable sarcasm!

Another hit piece by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health!
This tender loving care for incarcerated criminals!

This time, they don't blame Climate Change, but lack of A/Cs in prisons of Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. All states governed by Republican governors. You get the picture!

Surprisingly, they don't even mention the usual disparate effects this may have on black v. white prison inmates or that most black prisoners are only there for reasons of a racially biased law enforcement and judiciary. What a glaring omission! Pardon my sarcasm!

"...
No air conditioning:
In Florida: Roughly three-quarters of prisons lack AC.
In Texas: Over two-thirds of prison beds have no AC.
In Georgia and Alabama, many prisons also operate without complete AC.  ...
Dangerous in different ways: Not only are the overheated conditions inhumane, advocates say, they are also dangerous—leading to increased agitation and decreased vigilance among both guards and inmates. ..."

Microbe-made syntetic jet fuel

Fossil fuels are so passé! Welcome to the age of synthetic fuels!

"Aviation fuel produced by fermentation
The first commercial-scale plant that produces jet fuel from ethanol is about to come online. The plant, run by US company LanzaJet, will use catalytic steps adopted from the petrochemical industry, but their ultimate goal is to leave much of the catalytic work to microbes. The ethanol used by the plant is already produced by microbes: in a separate process, Clostridium autoethanogenum is fed waste carbon monoxide from places such as steel mills and metabolizes it into the compound. Jet fuel made from waste gases could help feed an aviation industry under pressure to find ‘sustainable’ alternatives to conventional fuel."

"Over the next few months, the world’s first commercial-scale ethanol-to-jet fuel plant will begin producing its first gallons of aviation fuel. The plant, located in Soperton, Georgia and developed by LanzaTech and its spin-out LanzaJet, represents a major milestone in their nearly 20-year effort to turn waste industrial gases into ethanol, and then to jet fuel. ..."

Georgia is a swing state. Biden only won by 11,779 votes in 2020!

The massive switch to mail in voting in 2020 was a disaster and opened many avenues to cheat!

"... Davis provided The Daily Signal with his updated numbers as of February. They show that out of the 34,869 voters who cast ballots in the wrong jurisdiction, 4,696 who voted at a previous address in 2020 now are confirmed to have registered at the new address or have driver’s license information reflecting a change of address form with the Postal Service. ..."

Georgia County District Attorney Fani Willis allegedly hired lover as special prosecutor in Trump case; used state funds for lavish vacations

Juicy! This election year 2024 is quickly becoming a fascinating soap opera! Stay tuned! Don't go anywhere! 😊

The Dimocratic Party house of cards is collapsing!

"A127-page court motion filed Monday alleges Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was embroiled in "an improper, clandestine personal relationship" with a married private attorney whom she ultimately hired to spearhead the prosecution of former President Donald Trump's Georgia election interference case. The alleged affair is said to have been mutually beneficial and to have involved possible criminality.

Extra to suggesting Willis is ethically compromised by her relationship with Nathan Wade — who is now in divorce proceedings — the filing claimed that the Democratic daughter of a top Black Panther may have been involved in the commission of a federal crime prosecutable under the federal racketeering statute, reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. ..."

This could potentially get Trump in trouble!

"Sidney Powell, a lawyer who played a leading role in the effort to reverse Donald Trump’s election loss in 2020, cut a deal to testify against the former president and others who Georgia prosecutors allege engaged in a “criminal enterprise” to subvert democracy.
A lawyer who was in Trump’s inner circle in the months after the November 2020 election, Powell pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges Thursday in exchange for a sentence that avoids jail time. In open court, she admitted to orchestrating a scheme to access voting equipment in a rural Georgia county in hopes of substantiating conspiracy theories that voting machines were flipping votes. ..."
