WHO proposes new taxes on tobacco, sugary drinks, and alcohol. Really!
Maybe time to dissolve the WHO? The WHO appears to be run by some terrible socialists!
How many times have sin taxes been tried before and failed? What is the definition of insanity?
"An initiative to boost taxes on tobacco, sugary drinks, and alcohol has been introduced by the WHO; the “3 by 35” effort urges international governments to implement such taxes by at least 50% by 2035 in an effort to reduce noncommunicable disease."
"... 3 by 35 Initiative, a bold global effort to increase the real prices of any or all of three unhealthy products – tobacco, alcohol, and sugary drinks by at least 50% by 2035 through tax increases ..."

The High Cost of Vietnam’s Cheap Cigarettes. Really!
The age old, dubious narrative to impose high sin taxes to reduce harm from tobacco and/or alcohol containing products!
Why do these products have to be more expensive and punish responsible users as well?
Why not e.g. higher health insurance premiums on heavy users? Or punish alcohol consumers heavier when they commit a crime or accident?
Do not heavy users statistically life shorter lives and thus receive usually less e.g. retirement income?
"Vietnam’s tobacco products remain cheap and widely accessible compared to other countries, leading to high tobacco usage and a growing health toll, say the nation’s health officials.
Low tax, high usage: Vietnam’s tobacco retail tax rate is just 36%, far below WHO’s recommended rate of 70–75%.
It is also far lower than regional peers including the Philippines (71.3%), Singapore (67.5%), and Thailand (78.6%).
The affordability means cigarettes are easily accessible to first-time users and even children.
Health burden: Tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of disease and premature death in Vietnam, causing ~104,300 deaths annually.
Reform needed: Vietnam health leaders are urging regular tax hikes to outpace income growth and align with international standards."

Sin Taxes Are Sins Committed By Politicians
Posted: 2/16/2015 Updated: 2/21/2015, 2/20/2015
Sin taxes such as on alcohol or tobacco or sugary drinks or junk food are highly arbitrary and are feelgood acts of government control!
Sin taxes make governments promote those so called sins to increase revenues (see vodka in Russia or cigarettes in China)!
Sin taxes unnecessarily drive up crimes like smuggling and bootlegging! The higher the taxes, the higher such crime rates. Negative health effects of bootlegged products are well established for decades if not longer!
Sin taxes are highly regressive, affecting lower income citizens more than other! This has been known for at least two centuries!
Conclusion: Abolish all sin taxes immediately!

NYPD Chokes Suspect To Death
Posted: 7/19/2014
Trigger
Just read “Watch the NYPD Choke a Guy to Death Over Alleged Black Market Cigarettes” and saw the video apparently taped by a relative of the man who died being subjected to police brutality.
I am presuming that this video is authentic and depicts the incident quite correctly.
The incidence reminds eerily of the probably way too many no knock SWAT team raids of private homes. Let’s hope that this Al Sharpton and others are not trying to spin this incident into race baiting.
The Finest First Responders
If this story is correct, then all these 8 or more police officers involved in this incident should be fired instantly.
It is incredible that it took at least 8 NYPD officers to standby or to subdue this unarmed man on the sidewalk who died because of the aggressive police intervention.
What Was The Suspect’s Offense?
The suspect was alleged to have traded in untaxed cigarettes! Yes, he was also scheduled to appear in court for charges of illegal pot possession and selling of untaxed cigarettes.
Attribute it to the nutty former Mayor Bloomberg of New York who dramatically raised tobacco taxes, who banned sales of tobacco to anyone under 21 up from 18 years. Without such ridiculous taxes etc. imposed by nutty politicians, there would not have been this petty crime in the first place!

Bravo! Californians Reject Tobacco Tax Increase
A Supposedly Good Cause And
Prominent Supporters Was Not Enough
Prominent Supporters Was Not Enough
Common sense prevailed!
Reuters News reports that Californian voters narrowly rejected Proposition 29, which would have raised the current tax of $0.87 by $1 to $1.87 (a 114% increase) for each packet of cigarettes. However, final results will not be in before early July.
The revenue raised from Proposition 29, estimated to be $735 million annually, would be used to fund cancer prevention and research initiatives.
Mr. Bloomberg was reported to have donated half a million dollar to advance this proposition. Lance Armstrong, a testicular not lung cancer survivor, promoted it with about $1.5. million
Smokers As Easy Prey
As if smokers have not already been hunted like witches for decades. Even if all smoking voters (about 14% of California’s adult population) and their families had objected, the much larger majority of non-smokers could have easily defeated them (tyranny of the majority).
Why should smokers be singled out to fund cancer research?
Who will be the next group to be so targeted?
If you want to make smokers pay, e.g. raise health insurance premiums.
Timing Is Everything
The ballot took place at a minor election date, which likely contributed to low voter turnout.
Sin Taxes Are Sin
Any tax that is as narrowly defined as a tobacco tax or alcohol tax ought to be abolished. Many of them are arbitrary and the result of particular historical events.
Sin taxes are highly regressive and have little purported effect. On the contrary, e.g. high alcohol taxes promote dangerous, unhealthy moon shining.
