62,000 People Arrested for Speech Crimes in Britain over Past Five Years

Concerning! Bad news! The UK used to be a beacon of free speech!

"Censorship laws such as the Malicious Communications Act 1988, the Communications Act 2003, and the Online Safety Act 2023 have been used by both Labour and so-called Conservative governments to arrest 62,199 people for “communication offences”, including offensive jokes online, between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2025, the Big Brother Watch pressure group has revealed.

The report was based on police data from 38 of the 45 territorial police forces in the UK, obtained following a series of Freedom of Information requests sent to all forces. However, the civil liberties group noted that because some forces failed or refused to provide their data, the true number of people arrested for speech crimes was likely much higher. ..."

62,000 People Arrested for Speech Crimes in Britain over Past Five Years "A report from a leading civil liberties campaign group has found that the British state has arrested at least 62,000 people over five years for speech crimes, for an average of 34 arrests per day."

Imported Authoritarian Threats to Campus Free Speech in the US or the risks of selling higher education abroad

Food for thought! This subject or similar subjects have been exposed in Western countries for decades (e.g. during the Cold War).

When appeasement becomes weakness! When ignorance becomes intolerable!

Beware The Open Society and Its Enemies (by Karl Popper, published in 1945) are everywhere!

Caveat: I have not read McLaughlin's book nor the article, but I believe I am somewhat familiar with the subject.

"... You could probably guess what a lot of these cases were about. Speech about abortion, guns, race, and Israel—the standard starting points of censorship and controversy. But over time, I began hearing more and more about people who felt like they couldn’t speak freely about foreign authoritarian governments. Most often, the Chinese government, but there were also problems arising from universities’ relationships with the Gulf States.

When an industry becomes global, it also becomes vulnerable to pressure from foreign governments. Viewers have probably seen stories about the sometimes-outlandish apologies that companies have issued to the Chinese government because they accidentally mentioned Tibet or Hong Kong. But when higher education is a global industry, there are really unique concerns that emerge. ..."

"A revealing exposé on how foreign authoritarian influence is undermining freedom and integrity within American higher education institutions.

In an era of globalized education, where ideals of freedom and inquiry should thrive, an alarming trend has emerged: foreign authoritarian regimes infiltrating American academia. In Authoritarians in the Academy, Sarah McLaughlin exposes how higher education institutions, long considered bastions of free thought, are compromising their values for financial gain and global partnerships.

This groundbreaking investigation reveals the subtle yet sweeping influence of authoritarian governments. University leaders are allowing censorship to flourish on campus, putting pressure on faculty, and silencing international student voices, all in the name of appeasing foreign powers. McLaughlin exposes the troubling reality where university leaders prioritize expansion and profit over the principles of free expression. The book describes incidents in classrooms where professors hesitate to discuss controversial topics and in boardrooms where administrators weigh the costs of offending oppressive regimes. McLaughlin offers a sobering look at how the compromises made in American academia reflect broader societal patterns seen in industries like tech, sports, and entertainment." (Source)

Sweeping Trump crackdown on misleading pharmaceutical ads is first in nearly 3 decades

Food for thought! The dilemma of free speech versus truth in advertising!

It is a fair assumption that pharmaceutical companies or social media or influencers or anyone have a higher responsibility when it comes to advertising medications.

"In a landmark move, the Trump administration has launched a sweeping crackdown on misleading pharmaceutical advertisements, the first major enforcement effort since direct-to-consumer drug ads were legalized in 1997.  ...

FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary recently spoke with Full Measure about the unprecedented effort, stating that the agency is sending “thousands” of enforcement letters targeting deceptive promotions across TV, social media, and online platforms.

The U.S. is one of only two countries allowing such ads (the other is New Zealand). Makary says the commercials often downplay serious risks, present false information, or mislead viewers by showcasing happy, dancing patients. He says FDA enforcement has been notoriously lax for decades, with FDA violation letters to drug companies dropping from 130 annually in the late 1990s to zero in 2024.

The new plan targets not just TV but also social media influencers and online pharmacies. ..."

Morocco: Activist Lachgar Jailed for 30 Months for Blasphemy, Insulting Islam

No hero in my opinion! This feminist/LGBTQ activist "slammed the [Islam] as fascist and misogynistic"! The punishment for such extremism is certainly harsh, but this kind of provocation was over the top and unnecessary! What was the point?
Freedom of speech has some limits!

Was freie Meinung war, heißt heute schnell „Hass“.

Advertisers are unnerved by Meta's free-speech shift. Really!

This might just be a red herring! It is a business opportunity for companies to provide filtering services for social media to advertisers.

"The social-media giant’s loosening of speech restrictions, unveiled this month, is unsettling advertisers, who say a decade of efforts to protect their reputations is at risk. They have expressed concerns over the past few weeks that Meta’s tools might not be enough to stop ads from showing up near offensive content as the new content-moderation approach comes into effect, and that user feeds could become inundated with misinformation."

Jewish organisations like the ADL Call for Reinstatement of New York Mask Ban of masks in public

Food for thought! Indeed a fundamental question!

To ponder:
  1. It is a several decades old question in Western constitutional and open society democracies governed by the rule of law is whether protesters/demonstrators in public spaces should be allowed to wear face coverings to hide their identity?
  2. Is this acceptable or not?
  3. Perhaps if any public protest or demonstration becomes violent, involves attacks on police officers or other individuals, and/or causes damages such a ban should automatically apply
"Jewish groups, led by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), are advocating for the reinstatement of New York's old law banning masks in public. This measure aims to facilitate the arrest of antisemitic demonstrators who hide their identities.

“A mask law will make a difference,” stated ADL Regional Director Scott Richman. He pointed out the historical impact such laws had on the Ku Klux Klan, a white supremacist group notorious for their masked violence. “Nobody wanted their face to be seen,” Richman noted. ..."

Government jawboned: Miss Information vs. Free Speech movie

Food for thought! Freedom of speech under attack from your government!

Aka big government paternalism!

"As misinformation proliferates online, the government increasingly attempts to curb its spread. In the face of strong formal speech protections, government officials have taken to pressuring and cajoling social media platforms to suppress unwanted content in the halls of Congress and behind the scenes. To what extent can the government’s power to speak be used to combat online misinformation before it becomes “jawboning” that violates the speech rights of private actors? The latest documentary from FedSoc Studios, Jawboned: Miss Information vs. Free Speech, investigates the distinctions between notification, persuasion, and unconstitutional government coercion, a key issue before the Supreme Court this term in Vivek H. Murthy v. Missouri and National Rifle Association v. Maria Vullo. ..."

Officials stand silent by as Brownshirt tactics make a campus comeback in the U.S.

Food for thought! How serious is the situation at U.S. universities? Resist the arrogant intolerance by authoritarians!

Caveat: I did not read the whole article.

"The situation on campus is becoming more dire with each passing day. Conduct considered acceptable now would have been met with swift reprisals just several years ago. Such is the power of habituation — or, as Daniel Patrick Moynihan aptly put it, “defining deviancy down.” Students are being chased, surrounded, barricaded, verbally abused, spit on, and even physically assaulted.

Of course, the victims are not just any students. The targets are those who don’t conform to the radical left-wing agenda now monopolizing most of American higher education. That means, practically speaking, students who are politically conservative, Christian, Jewish, pro-Western civilization, and/or pro-Israel. ...
When it comes to pursuing power, however, tactics that they would consider “fascistic” are the very ones they adopt. Any and all tactics — “By any means necessary!” — are considered acceptable, even admirable and noble. Ultimately, higher education is churning out scores of nihilistic ingrates. ..."
