Water-based zinc batteries tackle a barrier that has long blocked cheap, stable renewable energy storage

Good news! As is too often the case, the abstract of this research paper is way too technical and narrowly focused.

"... Researchers ... recently designed new aqueous electrolyte solutions that could help to improve the performance of Zn batteries. These electrolytes ... combine water with carefully selected salts that allow negatively charged ions (i.e., anions) to move closer to Zn ions, stabilizing the molecular structure that forms around Zn anodes.

"We developed water-in-salt electrolytes that extended the electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes to 3.0V, enabling Zn batteries to achieve long cycle life," ... "However, water-in-salt electrolytes increase cost and viscosity and reduce ion conductivity. In this work, we developed low-concentration aqueous electrolytes that perform similarly to water-in-salt, with low viscosity, low cost, and high conductivity." ..."

"Researchers ... have developed a new electrolyte design strategy that significantly improves the efficiency and stability of aqueous zinc metal batteries, offering a promising pathway toward low-cost, safe, and long-duration energy storage. ...

In their study, the engineering researchers propose a new architecture that enables the electrolyte to simultaneously combine several desirable properties: strong ion pairing without salt precipitation, high ionic conductivity, and a protective layer against water-induced side reactions. Testing demonstrated remarkable performance improvements, with an average coulombic efficiency of 99.99% over 1,000 cycles, a metric that measures how well batteries retain charge during use. ..."

From the abstract:
"Aqueous zinc metal batteries are low-cost electrochemical devices suitable for safe grid energy storage. However, water decomposition and Zn dendrite formation detrimentally affect their coulombic efficiency.
Conventional aqueous electrolyte solutions, with a concentration around 1 M, are cost-effective and exhibit high bulk ionic conductivity but cannot form a stable solid electrolyte interphase.
Water-in-salt and aqueous–organic hybrid electrolyte solutions can form robust solid electrolyte interphases, but they are not kinetically efficient and cost-effective.
Here, to circumvent these issues, we design variously concentrated aqueous electrolyte solutions using several salts with different donor numbers to extend anion coordination into the secondary solvation sheath.
We show that salt-derived anions with donor number > 18 enter the Zn2+ first solvation sheath, and ensure a strong binding energy between the Zn2+(H2O)5-anion nanometric clusters and water molecules in the secondary solvation sheath. In particular, 2 M aqueous electrolyte solutions containing fluorinated anions exhibit bulk ionic conductivities of 26–35 mS cm−1 at 25 °C and form a ZnF2-rich solid electrolyte interphase.
When tested in Zn||NaV3O8·1.5H2O Swagelok cells, the best-performing electrolyte solution enables an average coulombic efficiency of 99.99% for 1,000 cycles at 1.5 mA cm−2, corresponding to an initial specific energy of 130 Wh kg−1 (based on the combined weight of the positive and negative electrodes)."

A nice example of the blunt and direct language of President Trump

Enjoy!

"There is a massive Ecological Disaster unfolding in the Potomac River as a result of the Gross Mismanagement of Local Democrat Leaders, particularly, Governor Wes Moore, of Maryland. A sewer line breach in Maryland has caused millions of gallons of raw sewage to be dumped directly into the Potomac River, a result of incompetent Local and State Management of Essential Waste Management Systems. This is the same Governor who cannot rebuild a Bridge. It is clear Local Authorities cannot adequately handle this calamity. Therefore, I am directing Federal Authorities to immediately provide all necessary Management, Direction, and Coordination to protect the Potomac, the Water Supply in the Capital Region, and our treasured National Resources in our Nation’s Capital City. While State and Local Authorities have failed to request needed Emergency Help, I cannot allow incompetent Local “Leadership” to turn the River in the Heart of Washington into a Disaster Zone. As we saw in the Palisades, the Democrat War on Merit has real consequences. The Federal Government has no choice, but to step in. FEMA, which is currently being defunded by the Democrats, will play a key role in coordinating the response. Thank you for your attention to this matter! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP"

Baltimore rabbi (age 62) attacked and punched hard by two masked attackers, ends assault by drawing gun

Since the Holocaust, Jews have sworn never to be unarmed again!

It appears the old Rabbi waited for a long time to draw his gun! Only after he was attacked a second time, he drew his gun.

"... "It was so hard, my glasses fell off, my yarmulke fell off. Rabbi Goldfeiz, 62, was knocked to the ground by the man, who then began striking him and snatched his car keys. ...

The suspect and his accomplice then attempted to start Goldfeiz's vehicle but were unsuccessful. After being unable to start the car, the suspects tried to assault him again, [but] Goldfeiz drew his firearm and pointed it at one of the men. ...

Baltimore Police said that Rabbi Goldfeiz possesses a valid handgun permit. ..."

Maryland startup InventWood to launch Superwood stronger than steel

Amazing stuff! Knock on wood! 😊 When will it be sold at Home Depot or Lowe's?

"Maryland-based startup InventWood is set to mass-produce the first batches of 'Superwood,' a new material made of modified timber that's stronger than regular barky stems, and even stronger than steel. It's set to go on sale later this year. ...

University of Maryland materials scientist Liangbing Hu first devised the material with a 'densification process' back in 2018. ... this gives it a strength-to-weight 10 times better than steel. ...

The resulting Superwood is also resistant to fire, weathering, and pests. Hu has since fine-tuned the production process so it can be manufactured at scale in hours rather than weeks, and licensed the technology to InventWood. The company raised US$15 million to build a factory, and will ship its first batches of the material out of there this Northern Hemisphere sum ..."

Geologists discover mysterious subduction zone beneath Pacific, reshaping understanding of Earth's interior

Amazing stuff!

We do not even yet understand the geology of our planet very well, but we are inundated on a daily basis with a barrage of climate change propaganda and demagoguery! Even many scientists can not resist to chime in for more money or for lack of genius or being like idiot savants (Very peculiar Wikipedia eliminated or omitted this famous term. A case of political correctness?)!

"... scientists uncovered evidence of an ancient seafloor that sank deep into Earth during the age of dinosaurs, challenging existing theories about Earth's interior structure. Located in the East Pacific Rise (a tectonic plate boundary on the floor of the southeastern Pacific Ocean), this previously unstudied patch of seafloor sheds new light on the inner workings of our planet and how its surface has changed over millions of years. ...

They found an unusually thick area in the mantle transition zone, a region located between about 410 and 660 kilometers below the Earth's surface. The zone separates the upper and lower mantles, expanding or contracting based on temperature. The team believes that the newly discovered seafloor may also explain the anomalous structure of the Pacific Large Low Shear Velocity Province (LLSVP)—a massive region in Earth's lower mantle—as the LLSVP appears to be split by the slab. ...

What the team found surprised them—material was moving through Earth's interior much more slowly than previously thought. Wang believes that the unusual thickness of the area the team discovered suggests the presence of colder material in this part of the mantle transition zone, hinting that some oceanic slabs get stuck halfway down as they sink through the mantle. ..."

From the abstract:
"The Pacific large low-shear-velocity province (LLSVP), as revealed by cluster analysis of global tomographic models, hosts multiple internal anomalies, including a notable gap (~20° wide) between the central and eastern Pacific. The cause of the structural gap remains unconstrained. Directly above this structural gap, we identify an anomalously thick mantle transition zone east of the East Pacific Rise, the fastest-spreading ocean ridge in the world, using a dense set of SS precursors. The area of the thickened transition zone exhibits faster-than-average velocities according to recent tomographic images, suggesting perturbed postolivine phase boundaries shifting in response to lowered temperatures. We attribute this observation to episodes of Mesozoic-aged (250 to 120 million years ago) intraoceanic subduction beneath the present-day Nazca Plate. The eastern portion of the Pacific LLSVP was separated by downwelling because of this ancient oceanic slab. Our discovery provides a unique perspective on linking deep Earth structures with surface subduction."

How worms influenced evolution by increasing atmospheric oxygen

Amazing stuff!

"... The digging of prehistoric worms and other invertebrates churned up sediment along the ocean floor, exposing some minerals and burying others beneath layers of mud, silt, and sand. When scientists examined mixed sediments in the Chesapeake Bay, where conditions closely mimic those found in the early ocean, they found surprisingly high levels of pyrite—a mineral that releases oxygen when it forms but dissolves when exposed to oxygen in the water. Burrowing worms would have helped bury newly-formed pyrite while also unearthing the chemicals needed to make more of it, thereby releasing more oxygen and allowing it to build up rapidly in the atmosphere. ...
This steep increase in atmospheric oxygen kickstarted what is known as the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, which occurred about 480 million years ago and spawned a spectacular diversity of new animal species ..."

From the abstract:
"The early Paleozoic Era (∼540–420 Ma) was an interval of profound biogeochemical changes including increasing oxygen (O2) and the onset of bioturbation (sediment mixing by animals). It is hypothesized that incipient bioturbation caused a monotonic decrease in sedimentary burial of pyrite (FeS2), which would have slowed atmospheric O2 accumulation. However, pyrite accumulation can exhibit complex responses to dynamic, low-O2 environmental conditions. To assess pyrite burial in a potential modern analogue to early Paleozoic environments, we collected sediment cores from the Chesapeake Bay, an estuary with multiple gradients in sulfate concentration, hypoxia intensity, organic carbon flux and lability, and bioturbation. Results indicate that pyrite accumulation is maximized not under strong sulfate depletion in highly reducing sediments, but rather in sediments that occupy the mid-range of sulfate–chloride ratios. This probably occurs through efficient replenishment of pore water sulfate and/or through the generation of sulfur redox intermediates, which promote pyrite formation via the polysulfide reaction pathway. In light of these results and in contrast to earlier models, we hypothesize that mild early Paleozoic bioturbation temporarily increased pyrite burial efficiency by stimulating higher sulfate reduction rates and increasing sedimentary sulfide retention. Compiled sulfur and carbon data from a geochemical database indicate that median sulfur-carbon ratios of fine-grained marine siliciclastic rocks increased from the Ediacaran through the Ordovician, then decreased and became much less variable from the Silurian onward. Thus, the Cambrian and Ordovician Periods may constitute a distinct interval of the Proterozoic-Phanerozoic transition in which bioturbation temporarily accelerated O2 buildup. This transition probably ended in the Silurian, when pO2 rose to sufficient levels to homogenize sedimentary carbon–sulfur cycling."

The Rise of Untraceable Firearms made from kits

How serious is this issue?

"One in five crime-related guns on Baltimore’s streets are now “ghost guns”—firearms that don’t have serial numbers and are built from parts.

Guns made of parts from Polymer80—one of the largest makers of ghost gun parts nationwide—are recovered more than brands like Glock and Taurus, per a Baltimore Banner analysis.
This week, Baltimore officials announced they reached a $1.2 million settlement with Polymer80 that effectively ended the company’s business in Maryland. But keeping such guns off the streets remains an uphill battle. ..."

My Naturalization As A US Citizen

Sometimes GPS Navigation Fails In The Wrong Moment

On that day (late January 2006), my wife and I were driving in downtown Baltimore, MD to find the federal building. Our GPS navigator for some reason was not working properly this morning in the narrow downtown streets. We were circling street blocks.

A Very Special Treatment

Once we finally arrived at the federal building, I jumped out of the car, because I was at about 15 minutes or more late for the naturalization ceremony. I entered the federal building, rushed toward the front desk to address the staff and handed over my papers. Before I could finish explaining my situation, one of the staff of the front desk quickly came out of from behind the front desk and asked me to follow her. She rushed me to the elevator, she stoped the elevator that was just about to leave, telling everyone inside the elevator that I needed to get to the ceremony, and we both entered the elevator. As soon as we arrived at the right floor, she guided me to the room where the naturalization ceremony was held to make sure I did not get lost in the building. I felt very special this moment with all this attention.

The Ceremony

Inside the ceremony room were maybe 200-300 or more people, I do not remember exactly anymore.  There were many families with children and what appeared to be couples or individuals with their parents. They appeared to come from many different countries. A judge or a city official was giving a talk. Most people and myself were in awe. Unfortunately, an immigrant’s dream come true to see the US President to join the ceremony and to greet the new citizens did not happen although the White House is near by.

Aquarium And Italian Lunch

After the ceremony, my wife and I took a stroll along the beautiful harbor of Baltimore. We visited the aquarium at the harbor. From there, we went to Little Italy of Baltimore to celebrate my new citizenship with an Italian lunch, before we went home again.

A US Flag Was Flown Over The Capitol

At the time of my naturalization, I was working at the Heritage Foundation near Capitol Hill. My then boss, Mr. Bill Beach, arranged to have a US flag to be flown over the Capitol in honor of my naturalization.
