Soon Computers Beat Humans In Every Traditional Game Of Chance Or Strategy

Posted: 6/30/2014 Updated: 1/8/2015

Trigger

Here is a new article about a computer program that beats any poker player of specific kind of poker.

To Grow With The Challenge

If humans want to beat computers, the have to come up with new challenges to outsmart computers.

Both will mutually benefit from this evolution beyond nature!

Israel Should Consider To Reoccupy Gaza Strip

Peace Through Strength

The unilateral withdrawal by Israel in 2005 has obviously failed! Rockets keep flying from there. No country in the world would allow this to happen from a neighboring area!

Should Hezbollah get the idea to use this occasion to engage in hostilities, then Israel should punish them full force.

Support The Arabs To Become Economically Successful

Israel should offer a better life and a thriving economy to those Arabs who want to stay and self determination in the future. Those, Arabs who do not like the idea, should be given a plane ticket, some money, and leave.

Israel could offer to govern the Gaza Strip together with Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan.

Greenpeace Outlived Its Purpose!

Trigger

Decadence And Decline

We learn from this article among other things that Greenpeace is running losses. A staff member gambled a huge sum on foreign exchange trades. Staff is paid too much etc.

The organization exists since 1969. It has grown ever since. They have been collecting huge amounts of money from gullible Westerners and perhaps from the Russian or Chinese security agencies to undermine Western democracies.

Bee Colony Collapse - Parasites Not Pesticides

Trigger

Just read “Bloodsucking mite threatens UK honeybees”. This new research seems to provide further evidence that a virus carrying mite is perhaps behind the large scale bee colony collapse observed in Europe and North America over the past 10 years or so.

The Usual Suspects

As if on cue, the European Union, which proudly touts the Precautionary Principle (see e.g. my blog post), quickly imposed a two-year ban on certain pesticides. ““I pledge to my utmost to ensure that our bees, which are so vital to our ecosystem and contribute over 22 billion Euros [$29 billion] annually to European agriculture, are protected,” said European Union Health Commissioner Tonio Borg.” (source).

Similar reaction came from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the EPA.

Too Many Show Trials By U.S. Congress

Posted: 6/28/2014

Update As Of 7/19/2014

The wall street journal just reported in “Senators Challenge Mary Barra Over Decision to Keep GM's Top Lawyer/Panel Probing Handling of Ignition Switch Tells Auto Maker It Must Do More” that GM CEO Mary Barra was again dragged before U.S. Congress. This time our elected representatives found it important to lecture a CEO of a supposedly private company which general counsel the CEO should choose or keep.

How many times was this CEO now dragged before the U.S. Congress? This ridiculous grandstanding by our politicians is hardly bearable! Government Motors remains Government Motors!

If I had been the CEO, I would have refused to appear before the U.S. Congress for these show trials! Politicians would have to send for a sheriff to make me appear.

Trigger

This article reminded me of many other such events happening on Capitol Hill.

Political Show Trials In The Capitol

It is actually outrageous that members of the U.S. Congress constantly haul business men and women  before committees etc. while cameras are running.

Most recently, it was the new CEO of Government/General Motors.

These show trials are too often not much more than stages for politicians to self aggrandize.

If these business men or women committed anything, then they should be indicted by prosecutors or be sued or be fined.

Big News On Speed Of Light

Trigger

Here is the original article by James Franson. The original article is way above my head. But it appears that the popular science article above does not capture the essence of the original very well.

Consequential

The speed of light is one of the most important constants of physics. Remember E = MC2!

Photons appear to be decelerated during their flight through space, because of some interaction, which supposedly slows them down below the current known speed limit.

The original article points out that photons were traveling at less speed than neutrinos. Which would be surprising indeed.

If this is confirmed that may have major implications/ramifications on science and beyond.

Martin Luther King Jr. Was A Radical Zealot

Trigger

Recently watched PBS God In America episode no. 5 “God in America: Five: Soul of a Nation”. This episode was mainly about Billy Graham and Martin Luther King Jr.

This is my second blog post about Martin Luther King Jr.. For my first one see here. This blog posts are intentionally contrasting the predominant narrative of MLK in the U.S.

Self-Righteous

Can a pastor who proclaims to be righteous be self-righteous? Of course. Obviously, the boundaries between righteous and self-righteous are grey.

The above video pointed me two speeches by MLK:
  1. Reportedly the first speech ever on his civil rights agenda given December 5, 1955, referred to as “Address to the first Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) Mass Meeting”  (see full text e.g. here)
  2. The very last speech of his life given on April 3, 1968, referred to as “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” (see full text e.g. here)

In the first speech, MLK says among other things “And we are not wrong; we are not wrong in what we are doing. (Well) If we are wrong, the Supreme Court of this nation is wrong. (Yes sir) [applause] If we are wrong, the Constitution of the United States is wrong.” (emphasis added). This is not exactly humble speech or a sign of humility. There is a very strong presumption here made by MLK.

In the second speech MLK said (emphasis and comments added):
“And also, in the human rights revolution, if something isn't done and done in a hurry to bring the colored peoples of the world out of their long years of poverty; their long years of hurt and neglect, the whole world is doomed.”
[MLK clearly seemed impatient and immodest.]
We mean business now and we are determined to gain our rightful place in God's world. ”
“Now we're going to march again, and we've got to march again (Yeah), in order to put the issue where it is supposed to be (Yeah) [Applause] and force everybody to see that there are thirteen hundred of God's children here suffering (That's right), ... ”
[MLK wanted to force people to see! Really! Is this non-violent?]
“We aren't going to let any mace stop us. We are masters in our nonviolent movement in disarming police forces. They don't know what to do. I've seen them so often. I remember in Birmingham, Alabama, when we were in that majestic struggle there, we would move out of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church day after day. By the hundreds we would move out, and Bull Connor would tell them to send the dogs forth, and they did come. But we just went before the dogs singing, "Ain't gonna let nobody turn me around." [Applause] Bull Connor next would say, "Turn the fire hoses on." (Yeah) And as I said to you the other night, Bull Connor didn't know history. He knew a kind of physics that somehow didn't relate to the trans-physics that we knew about. And that was the fact that there was a certain kind of fire that no water could put out. [Applause] And we went before the fire hoses. (Yeah) We had known water. (All right) If we were Baptist or some other denominations, we had been immersed. If we were Methodist or some others, we had been sprinkled. But we knew water. That couldn't stop us.
[Was MLK carried away by becoming unstoppable? He seems to relish in his accomplishment to trounce the police.]
Now we've got to go on in Memphis just like that. I call upon you to be with us when we go out Monday. (Yes) Now about injunctions. We have an injunction and we're going into court tomorrow morning (Go ahead) to fight this illegal, unconstitutional injunction. All we say to America is to be true to what you said on paper. [Applause] If I lived in China or even Russia, or any totalitarian country, maybe I could understand some of these illegal injunctions. Maybe I could understand the denial of certain basic First Amendment privileges, because they haven't committed themselves to that over there. But somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read (Yes) of the freedom of speech. (Yes) Somewhere I read (All right) of the freedom of press. (Yes) Somewhere I read (Yes) that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right. [Applause] And so just as I say we aren't going to let any dogs or water hoses turn us around, we aren't going to let any injunction turn us around. [Applause] We are going on. We need all of you.”
[Was MLK suggesting to ignore court orders when it’s inconvenient or to defy the rule of law?]
“"Let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream."”
[Like a mighty stream unstoppable and destroying everything in its path! Is this non-violence?]
Who is it that is supposed to articulate the longings and aspirations of the people more than the preacher? Somewhere the preacher must have a kind of fire shut up in his bones (Yes), and whenever injustice is around he must tell it. (Yes) Somehow the preacher must be an Amos, who said, "When God Speaks, who can but prophesy?" (Yes) Again with Amos, "Let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream." (Yes) Somehow the preacher must say with Jesus, "The spirit of the Lord is upon me (Yes), because He hath anointed me (Yes), and He's anointed me to deal with the problems of the poor." (Go ahead)”
[God has not anointed MLK! The presupposition in the first sentence of this quote is debatable that only preachers are qualified to articulate the longings ...]
“Now the other thing we'll have to do is this: always anchor our external direct action with the power of economic withdrawal. Now we are poor people, individually we are poor when you compare us with white society in America. We are poor. Never stop and forget that collectively, that means all of us together, collectively we are richer than all the nations in the world, with the exception of nine. Did you ever think about that? After you leave the United States, Soviet Russia, Great Britain, West Germany, France, and I could name the others, the American Negro collectively is richer than most nations of the world. We have an annual income of more than thirty billion dollars a year, which is more than all of the exports of the United States and more than the national budget of Canada. Did you know that? That's power right there, if we know how to pool it. (Yeah) [Applause]”
[Was MLK a pastor or a revolutionary? Who would have been in charge of this “pool”, MLK?]
“Now if you are not prepared to do that, we do have an agenda that we must follow. And our agenda calls for withdrawing economic support from you.”
[MLK is threatening! Is a threat of economic ruin or loss of livelihood non-violence?]
“And so, as a result of this, we are asking you tonight (Amen) to go out and tell your neighbors not to buy Coca-Cola in Memphis. (Yeah) [Applause] Go by and tell them not to buy Sealtest milk. (Yeah)[Applause] Tell them not to buy–what is the other bread?–Wonder Bread. [Applause] And what is the other bread company, Jesse? Tell them not to buy Hart's bread. [Applause] As Jesse Jackson has said, up to now only the garbage men have been feeling pain. Now we must kind of redistribute that pain. [Applause] We are choosing these companies because they haven't been fair in their hiring policies, and we are choosing them because they can begin the process of saying they are going to support the needs and the rights of these men who are on strike. And then they can move on downtown and tell Mayor Loeb to do what is right. (That's right, Speak) [Applause]”
[I am stunned! MLK even provides concrete threats. A pastor advocates revenge?]
“... we are putting pressure where it really hurts. (There you go) And I ask you to follow through here.”
[A pastor wants to really hurt? Is this non-violence?]
“Now let me say as I move to my conclusion that we've got to give ourselves to this struggle until the end. (Amen) Nothing would be more tragic than to stop at this point in Memphis. We've got to see it through. [Applause] And when we have our march, you need to be there. If it means leaving work, if it means leaving school, be there. [Applause] Be concerned about your brother. You may not be on strike (Yeah), but either we go up together or we go down together. [Applause] Let us develop a kind of dangerous unselfishness.”
[What would Jesus say about such a pastor?]
I just want to do God's will.
[Was this perhaps a delusion of grandeur?]

I have to admit that I knew very little of the speeches and writings of MLK, most of it only in excerpts. I was particularly shocked when I read the entire second speech by MLK. In this whole speech, MLK comes away as a single-minded radical not a pastor.

Justice

To seek justice is unquestionably a worthy human cause. However, to coerce justice or demand some kind of justice to be done immediately is zealotry.

Justice is often in the eye of the beholder. Justice, like truth, is often not simply white and black (no pun intended, does not refer to race)!

I would argue that MLK was pushing for a certain kind of fast justice!

Public Portrayal Of MLK

Like many foreigners or even like many Americans I was most familiar with MLK’s I have a dream speech he gave at the Mall in Washington DC. Probably, one of the most famous footages of him.

In hindsight, this kind of portrayal of this man is a distortion or propaganda.

A Lesser Known Assassination Attempt On Martin Luther King Jr.

In His Own Words

“And I want to thank God, once more, for allowing me to be here with you. (Yes sir) You know, several years ago I was in New York City autographing the first book that I had written. And while sitting there autographing books, a demented black woman came up. The only question I heard from her was, "Are you Martin Luther King?" And I was looking down writing and I said, "Yes."
The next minute I felt something beating on my chest. Before I knew it I had been stabbed by this demented woman. I was rushed to Harlem Hospital. It was a dark Saturday afternoon. And that blade had gone through, and the X rays revealed that the tip of the blade was on the edge of my aorta, the main artery. And once that's punctured you're drowned in your own blood, that's the end of you. (Yes sir) It came out in the New York Times the next morning that if I had merely sneezed, I would have died.”
(Source: Martin Luther King Jr. speech of 8/3/1968  “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”, see full text e.g. here; emphasis added)

Import

Like most people I have learnt that there was a bomb attack on MLK’s house committed by a white person. We all know it was a white man who shot MLK.

Thus, I was stunned to read today for the first time that there was also a black woman who came close to assassinate MLK. Curiously, the Wikipedia entry on MLK does not mention this event. Who was this black woman? Was she really demented as MLK claims? Was it a white conspiracy to kill MLK?

Izola Curry

She was the “black demented woman”. Wikipedia actually has an article on her. According to this article MLK was not stabbed with a knife, but with a letter opener. Otherwise, we do not learn much about this woman and her motives from this article. Has no journalist visited her?

Stanford University also has an article on her. From this article we learn (emphasis added):
“After stabbing King, Curry was arrested at the scene and found carrying a loaded gun. When questioned by police at New York’s 28th precinct, she accused civil rights leaders of “boycotting” and “torturing” her as well as causing her to lose jobs and forcing her to change her religion (Curry, Statement to Howard Jones, 21 September 1958). Curry also suggested that dangerous connections were being forged between the civil rights movement and the Communist Party. After authorities informed her that she was being charged with felonious assault and possession of firearms, she reportedly replied, “I’m charging him [King] as well as he’s charging me…I’m charging him with being mixed up with the Communists” (“Dr. King’s Knifer,” [New York Times] 22 September 1962).”
[Unfortunately, I did not have the time to retrieve this NYT article]

Was she really demented despite the fact that she was committed to an institution for the criminally insane (according to Wikipedia and Stanford University)?

Not to be misunderstood, there is absolutely no justification whatsoever for anyone to attempt to kill MLK.

Martin Luther King Jr. On Rosa Parks

A Person Of High Character And Integrity

On December 5, 1955, Martin Luther King Jr. said in a public speech about Rosa Parks following (emphasis added):
“Just the other day, just last Thursday to be exact, one of the finest citizens in Montgomery--(Amen) not one of the finest Negro citizens (That's right), but one of the finest citizens in Montgomery--was taken from a bus (Yes) and carried to jail and arrested (Yes) because she refused to get up to give her seat to a white person. (yes, that's right) Now the press would have us believe that she refused to leave a reserved section for Negroes (Yes), but I want you to know this evening that there is no reserved section. (All right) The law has never been clarified at that point. (Hell no) Now I think I speak with legal authority--not that I have any legal authority, but I think I speak with legal authority behind me--(All right) that the law, the ordinance, the city ordinance has never been totally clarified. (That's right)
Mrs. Rosa Parks is a fine person. (Well,) And, since it had to happen, I'm happy that it happened to a person like Mrs. Parks, (Yes) for nobody can doubt the boundless outreach of her integrity. (Sure enough) Nobody can doubt the height of her character (Yes), nobody can doubt the depth of her Christian commitment and devotion to the teachings of Jesus. (All right) And I'm happy, since it had to happen, it happened to a person that nobody can call a disturbing factor in the community. (All right) Mrs. Parks is a fine Christian person, unassuming, and yet there is integrity and character there. And just because she refused to get up, she was arrested.” (Source: “Address to the first Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) Mass Meeting” see full text here)

The Rosa Parks Event

The Rosa Parks event was well planned and organized plus Rosa Parks was planted on the bus to do what she did.

I would assume, that MLK was also fully aware of this. Thus, his long speech about Rosa Parks is somewhat disingenuous in my view.

Was The Civil Rights Struggle Like Civil War II

Prologue

This blog post is more food for thought than a full blown post on this subject.

The prevailing narrative in the U.S. is that the Civil Rights Movement was something praiseworthy and a great achievement. Was it really? Or was it more like righteous minded people tried to impose their views on others?

Hyperbole Intended

Are there similarities between the so called Civil Rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s and the American Civil War of 1861-65?

If you read e.g. the Freedom Rider article on Wikipedia one can get the impression that this struggle was quite violent and disturbing.

To liken the Civil Rights struggle with a Civil War II may seem like a very provocative hypothesis!
It certainly is hyperbole!

Invasion

Thousands if not 10,000s of people from outside states invaded targeted southern states to demand equal rights and to register black americans to vote. They came to provoke the federal government to take action and so on.

From the perspective of the people living in the targeted southern states this could have been seen as an unwelcome invasion.

No Justification Whatsoever For Crimes

This blog post should not be misconstrued. It is not a justification of any kind for the abhorable violence or acts of brutality and murder committed against non violent civil rights activists. The perpetrators should have instantly be prosecuted to the full extent of criminal law.

Previous, Related Blog Posts

Here (contains references to more of my related blog posts). In particular, in those previous blog posts I have questioned whether nonviolence was really nonviolence! From today’s perspective the actions taken by so called nonviolent civil rights activists would be called bullying or worse.
