Global warming is coming for the countryside. Really!

New climate disinformation und demagoguery by the AAAS! E.g. the headline of this news article contradicts the mentioned research!

The article heavily relies on climate model forecasts up to 2050! Laughable! Junk journalism!

Does this article/research confuse urban sprawl with rural areas? Quite possibly!

What is please "urban climate change"? Microclimate? How relevant is that compared to global warming/climate change? Or is this an admission that greenhouse gases are a red herring (junk science)? You bet!

This research also relies on junk climate models and forecasts of up to 100 years. Climate is a much too complex a phenomenon that is still poorly understood. Weather forecasts are still barely accurate for more than 48 hours or so and so on.

Does not the urban heat island effect already mess up the temperature measurement record for over 100 years or so given expanding urban areas and population growth? You bet! The urban heat island effect is perhaps the strongest reason why Global Warming is a hoax! Many of the systematic temperature measurements have been taken at meteorological stations in urban areas for the past 100 or more years..

Resolution of climate models is not a convincing metric!

"... But now a pioneering study [???] suggests that as global warming continues in much of the world, the countryside’s appeal as a climate buffer may dwindle. ...

But such regional models inherit the biases of the coarse global models and don’t capture feedback effects of cities on the broader climate. They have offered varying forecasts for the urban heat island effect: Some suggested it will stay the same, others saw it growing stronger, and still others forecast it would weaken. For the past few years, 20 modeling centers worldwide have been collaborating, hoping to converge on a verdict.

Taking advantage of increasing computing power, other researchers are pursuing global climate models that can simulate the whole planet at resolutions high enough to capture cities. As part of the European Union’s Destination Earth project to forecast the planet’s future, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has developed a high-resolution climate model. Researchers there used it to simulate a greenhouse-warmed world from 2020 to ’50 at a 9-kilometer resolution, fine enough to track urban climate.

The ECMWF team zoomed in on 200 cities in four climatic regions: cold, arid, temperate, and tropical. The results, published in June in Geophysical Research Letters, led to a surprising conclusion:
By 2050, whereas cities on average remained hotter than the countryside nearby, “the rural surroundings of cities warmed up faster,” says Xabier Pedruzo-Bagazgoitia, the study’s lead author. Except in cold regions, the urban heat island effect was weakening. ...

Fifteen years ago, a modeling study in the Journal of Climate had suggested a plausible mechanism for a weakened heat island effect [???]. ..."

From the abstract:
"Coupled multi-decadal global km-scale simulations completed in recent years open new perspectives in the investigation and understanding of urban climate change [???].
This study introduces a generic method for extracting urban areas and their rural references worldwide and validates it on hourly timescales with remote-sensing observations of land-surface temperature for over 400 cities, while identifying the key role of spatial resolution.
We showcase the immense amount of hourly data available for each city for 60 years of past and future climate [???] in the Next Generation Earth Modelling Systems simulations, and how these simulations represent surface-atmosphere interactions driven by urban areas.
We finally propose city clustering as a method to exploit these simulations and move beyond city-specific results. Results suggest a mean potential decrease in future urban heat island intensity driven by stronger rural warming for all clusters except for cold climates."

How Western news media have spread disinformation about the sudden, mass illegal immigrant invasion of two exclave cities of Spain in Morocco

Today, I became for the first time fully aware of the huge scope of what went on in Ceuta and Melilla thanks to Tichy's Einblick.

The least part of the disinformation was to suggest the event happened in Spain! It did not!

Reportedly, within 24 hours an estimated 49,000 illegal immigrants descended on Ceuta (Spanish exclave located on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco). Most of them young men from the Maghreb and other African countries.

Were there no warnings about a pending invasion? Strange!

The exclave city of Ceuta (not Casablanca) in Morocco has only a population of about 89,000. Total area 18.5 km2 (7.1 sq mi).

Numerous crimes were committed. About 19 individuals died.

What did the government of Morocco know and do about this massive invasion? Who organized this invasion?

Apparently, during a similar incident in 2021, the Spanish intelligence service concluded that Morocco used mass invasion as a political weapon against Spain.

The right of free movement in the European Union is threatened as several EU countries indicated that they will close their borders in response to this mass invasion.

China targets Canada's election—and may be targeting Australia's

How about other Western countries? How severe is the overtly and covertly interference?

How naive are Western countries when it comes to election interference by China?

"Following Canadian authorities’ discovery of a Chinese information operation targeting their country’s election, Australians, too, should beware such risks.

In fact, there are already signs that Beijing is interfering in campaigning for the Australian election to be held on 3 May.

In Canada, China evidently prefers the Liberal government of Prime Minister Mark Carney to the Conservative opposition.

In Australia, we are seeing messaging against Opposition Leader Peter Dutton—suggesting that Beijing wants the Labor government of Anthony Albanese to be re-elected.

The Australian Secret Intelligence Organisation and the Australian Electoral Commission are cooperating to guard against China’s now well established habit of trying to shape foreign elections. ...

For Australian voters, especially those consuming media in languages other than English, the information environment is crowded and contested. Overtly, there are foreign official state channels (communications by foreign governments) and state-controlled outlets (those funded and editorially controlled by foreign states).

Covertly, there are attributed and non-attributed channels. Attributed channels operate under foreign state oversight without publicly disclosing affiliation. Non-attributed channels aren’t directly linked to foreign states, but are nonetheless aligned. The interwoven and reinforcing nature of these channels is part of the cause for concern, particularly as they operate outside regulatory or journalistic oversight. ..."

Yale University: The science of climate adaptation “[Humans] are not good at preparing for the unprecedented”. Really!

Another example of an elite university trying to fool the public with climate change demagoguery! What a nonsense!

What a nutty and ideologically corrupt professor! According to Google Scholar this professor is fairly highly cited with over 62,000 lifetime citations.

Humans survived the Little Antique Ice Age (about 536-660 CE),  Medieval Warm Period (about 950-1250 CE) and the Little Ice Age (about 1300-1850 CE) Humans will do just fine! Humans would even do much better without all this grotesque alarmism, scaremongering, and pseudoscience of climate change!

"The evolving science of climate adaptation. “We are not good at preparing for the unprecedented,” says Yale environmental scientist Katharine Mach"

Of course, Yale U also repeats this lie:
"Between July 2023 and June 2024 temperatures were the highest on record and surpassed 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for the full year."

No wonder the IPCC is so tainted:
"Mach served as director of science for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group II Technical Support Unit in 2015 ..."

"It is now unambiguously the case that the most important adaptation is reducing emissions of greenhouse gases at the same time that we need to increase preparedness. We are pretty good at increasing preparedness for things we have already experienced. We are not good at preparing for the unprecedented.” Katharine Mach

Russian propaganda is reportedly influencing AI chatbot results

How do you corrupt chatbot responses? Deliberately put tons of propaganda and demagoguery out on the Internet!

"Russian propaganda may be influencing certain answers from AI chatbots, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Meta’s Meta AI, according to a new report.

NewsGuard, a company that develops rating systems for news and information websites, claims to have found evidence that a Moscow-based network named “Pravda” is publishing false claims to affect the responses of AI models.

Pravda has flooded search results and web crawlers with pro-Russian falsehoods, publishing 3.6 million misleading articles in 2024 alone, per NewsGuard, citing statistics from the nonprofit American Sunlight Project.

NewsGuard’s analysis, which probed 10 leading chatbots, found that the chatbots collectively repeated false Russian disinformation narratives, like that the U.S. operates secret bioweapons labs in Ukraine, 33% of the time. ..."

Yale University: Centralized fiscal systems reduce economic inequality. Really!

How an elite university tries to manipulate public opinion by messing with headlines! Socialist central planners at work! May we call this another example of junk science.

Yale U also propagates centralization versus federalism of government by ignoring e.g. voting with your feet mobility!

Moreover, this study seems to be totally oblivious of important factors like population density/concentration per state and total income per state. Take Arizona as an example: This state has only two major metro areas, i.e. Phoenix and Tucson, the rest of the state is thinly populated.

The headlines are changing from "economic inequality." to "Economic Mobility" to "Children’s Economic Mobility". Very nice propaganda trick abusing children!

Caveat: I did not read the paper.

"A new Yale study finds that when state or county governments handle most of the taxing and spending instead of towns, low-income children often benefit."

From the abstract:
"Disparities in state and local government spending are key drivers of spatial inequality in social outcomes, including economic mobility. Yet beyond spending levels, the fiscal centralization of state and local governments—that is, the relative role of higher- versus lower-level governments in taxing, spending, and public employment—also differs substantially, traceable to place-specific founding circumstances and path dependent historical trajectories.
In this study, we ask, in more centralized fiscal systems, is there less spatial inequality in the economic mobility outcomes of low-income children? To answer this, we construct a novel Fiscal Centralization Index for each state and each county using data from the U.S. Census of Governments. We then use place-based estimates of intergenerational economic mobility, provided by Opportunity Insights, to measure cross-census-tract variation in the mobility outcomes of children within each state and each county.
We find that more centralized fiscal structures exhibit less spatial inequality in the economic mobility outcomes of low-income children, and this is driven by improving outcomes in lower-performing census tracts. Our findings motivate the fiscal sociology of place as a framework for revealing how historically conditioned fiscal systems are implicated in the production of place-based inequalities, with the potential to generate new insights and policy interventions."

Biden administration announces major actions to tackle Russian efforts to influence 2024 election

Let's not forget that Putin the Terrible is a former KGB agent (once stationed in communist Germany)!

Of course, CNN could not fail to mention that these propaganda efforts aimed to "boost the candidacy of Donald Trump". Laughable!

"The Biden administration announced a sweeping set of actions to tackle a major Russian government-backed effort to influence the 2024 US presidential election on Wednesday, including unveiling criminal charges against two Russian nationals, sanctions on 10 individuals and entities, and the seizure of 32 internet domains.

At Russian President Vladimir Putin’s direction, three Russian companies used fake profiles to promote false narratives on social media, US Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said in a statement. Internal documents produced by one of those Russian companies show one of the goals of the propaganda effort was to boost the candidacy of Donald Trump or whoever emerged as the Republican nominee for president, according to an FBI affidavit. ..."

AI generated video from Russia claims French President Macron will be killed in Kyiv by Ukrainian operatives

Dangerous disinformation!

"Frighteningly, there is also an AI-generated video making the rounds that purports to show a French news report that Ukrainian operatives planned to kill Macron in Kyiv and then blame the assassination on Russia. Even more terrifying is that many people on social media bought into it and reposted it.

This AI-generated video, circulating on Russian Telegram, claims to show a France 24 broadcast in which a presenter announces President Macron has cancelled a scheduled visit to Ukraine over fears of an assassination attempt."

Israel recognition? 89% of Arabs say never in an opinion poll across 16 Arab countries. Really!

Bad news! What a piece of disinformation!

According to the organizers of this survey the cowardly mass massacre by Hamas killers was just a "military operation". Sounds like Putin the Terrible! Very disturbing!

"Arab Center Washington DC (ACW), in cooperation with The Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS), conducted a survey of public opinion in 16 Arab countries". This center is financed by Qatar: "Affiliation
ACW is affiliated with the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (ACRPS), headquartered in Doha, Qatar."

What seems to be very disturbing about this survey that the cowardly mass massacre committed by Hamas killers on October 7 is treated as simply an attack or "military operation"! The survey apparently never asked about the horrific crime committed by Hamas!

"... The comprehensive poll, which gauged sentiments across 16 Arab countries, underscores a growing resistance against normalization with Israel in the wake of the Israeli war on Gaza. ...
The survey detailed notable country-specific shifts in public opinion, highlighting a dramatic change in perspective among nations that have historically taken steps toward normalizing relations with Israel. In Saudi Arabia, opposition surged from 38% in 2022 to a remarkable 68% in the latest poll. Similarly, Morocco saw an increase from 67% to 78%, and Sudan from 72% to 81%, showcasing a significant hardening of attitudes across diverse Arab societies. ...
The heightened opposition is especially pronounced in countries that have formal peace agreements with Israel, such as Jordan, Egypt, and Morocco, as well as those like Sudan, which have recently begun normalizing political relations. Despite governmental moves towards diplomacy, there appears to be a near-consensus among the populations of these nations against the recognition of Israel, underscoring a significant disconnect between official policy and public sentiment. ..."

"... The survey is based on telephone interviews conducted between December 12, 2023, and January 5, 2024, with a representative sample of 8,000 individual respondents in the following 16 Arab countries: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, the West Bank in Palestine, and Yemen. These countries represent more than 95% of the population across the Arab region. ...
The survey included a set of questions ... First, looking at the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, the respondents were asked about the most and second most important reasons motivating Hamas. The results demonstrated a diverse range of reasons behind the operation. While 35% of respondents stated that the most important reason was the continued Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, 24% stated that it was Israel’s targeting of Al-Aqsa Mosque, 8% said it was the ongoing siege on the Gaza Strip, and 6% attributed it to the continuation of Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories. ..."

Putin's Massive Global Disinformation Campaign

Posted:

Trigger

Here are some salient excerpts (emphasis added):
  1. “The Russian propaganda machine is being credited with almost magical powers of penetration and persuasion. NATO’s military commander, General Philip Breedlove, has called it “the most amazing information warfare blitzkrieg we have ever seen.” David Remnick, editor of the New Yorker, who covered the last years of the Soviet Union for the Washington Post, calls RT “darkly, nastily brilliant, so much more sophisticated than Soviet propaganda.””
  2. “Indeed, the global reach of Russian propaganda is impressive. RT, the flagship operation, broadcasts news and talk shows in five major languages with a potential audience of over 700 million people in 100 countries. It also garners a significant following on YouTube.”
  3. “Then there is the shadow army of Kremlin-paid Internet “trolls” who closely monitor social media as well as major Western news sites, ready to pounce on critics of the Kremlin. The aim of the Kremlin’s messaging, as one expert put it, is “not to persuade (as in classic public diplomacy) or earn credibility but to sow confusion via conspiracy theories and proliferate falsehoods.””
  4. “This effort is generously funded. This year the Kremlin bankrolled RT to the tune of $400 million, while the global news agency Rossiya Segodnya (Russia Today) received $170 million. For comparison, Voice of America’s budget this year is $212 million and that of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty $104 million—in a country whose GDP is nine times Russia’s.”

From Soviet Global Disinformation To Putin’s Global Disinformation

I have no doubts that the former KGB officer Vladimir Putin the Terrible is behind a lot of disinformation strategically and tactically disseminated through western media to sow discontent and discord.

There have been a number of reports that Russia is behind significant funding of some of the best known environmentalist groups in the West like Sierra Club or Greenpeace. Who has the most to gain e.g. when the Keystone XL Pipeline is not built?

Personally, I have noticed that some of the remarks posted in Internet forums or reader comments on Western media sites could have been written by Putin’s henchmen.
