Chinese researchers have developed a revolutionary form of high yield hybrid rice that can replicate itself through seeds that are clones

Good news! This could be a breakthrough!

"Hybrid rice, produced by crossing two genetically distinct parent varieties, typically produces much higher yields through a phenomenon called heterosis, or “hybrid vigor.” However, the benefit doesn’t extend to the next generation of seeds, which lose their yield advantage when replanted, forcing farmers to buy new seed every season. Scientists at the China National Rice Research Institute now claim they’ve solved that problem by creating hybrid rice that produces seeds that are genetically identical to itself, a long-sought breakthrough in rice breeding."

From the abstract:
"Apomixis, a form of clonal seed reproduction, offers a transformative approach to agriculture by enabling the stable fixation of hybrid vigor and elite heterozygosity across generations.
However, the practical implementation of synthetic apomixis has been hindered by highly variable clonal efficiency or significant yield penalties.
In this study, through integrated transcriptomic analyses, we identified a sperm-specific transcription factor in rice that likely functions as a key initiator of embryogenesis.
Ectopic expression of this factor in egg cells effectively induces parthenogenesis and produces haploid progeny. When combined with clonal gametogenesis, this system achieved nearly complete synthetic apomixis, with clonal seed production rates exceeding 99% across all derived hybrid rice lines. Moreover, we generated apomictic hybrid lines that not only consistently produced over 99% clonal seeds but also exhibited seed yields comparable to conventional F1 hybrids. These findings establish a scalable and agriculturally viable platform for synthetic apomixis, achieving stable fixation of heterosis through clonal seeds and paving the way for the commercial deployment of self-perpetuating hybrid crops."

There is evidence of human presence of at least 3,600 food contact chemicals used to store, process, package, and serve foodstuffs

Concerning? How serious is this issue? Alarmism and hysteria?

There have been tons of reports in the past several decades on human made chemicals found in our daily food.

This seems to be a very comprehensive study about chemicals entering into the  human food chain and into the human body.

However, there are about 8 billion humans depending every day on food packaging and storage materials.

"There is evidence of human exposure to at least 3,600 chemicals that leach into food in the manufacturing, processing, packaging, and storage of food supply, per a new Switzerland-based study—the first to systematically link the chemicals used in materials to package and process foods to human exposure. CNN"

From the abstract:
"Background
Over 1800 food contact chemicals (FCCs) are known to migrate from food contact articles used to store, process, package, and serve foodstuffs. Many of these FCCs have hazard properties of concern, and still others have never been tested for toxicity. Humans are known to be exposed to FCCs via foods, but the full extent of human exposure to all FCCs is unknown.
Objective
To close this important knowledge gap, we conducted a systematic overview of FCCs that have been monitored and detected in human biomonitoring studies according to a previously published protocol.
Methods
We first compared the more than 14,000 known FCCs to five biomonitoring programs and three metabolome/exposome databases. In a second step, we prioritized FCCs that have been frequently detected in food contact materials and systematically mapped the available evidence for their presence in humans.
Results
For 25% of the known FCCs (3601), we found evidence for their presence in humans. This includes 194 FCCs from human biomonitoring programs, with 80 of these having hazard properties of high concern. Of the 3528 FCCs included in metabolome/exposome databases, most are from the Blood Exposome Database. We found evidence for the presence in humans for 63 of the 175 prioritized FCCs included in the systematic evidence map, and 59 of the prioritized FCCs lack hazard data.
Significance
Notwithstanding that there are also other sources of exposure for many FCCs, these data will help to prioritize FCCs of concern by linking information on migration and biomonitoring. Our results on FCCs monitored in humans are available as an interactive dashboard (FCChumon) to enable policymakers, public health researchers, and food industry decision-makers to make food contact materials and articles safer, reduce human exposure to hazardous FCCs and improve public health.
Impact statement
We present systematically compiled evidence on human exposure to 3601 food contact chemicals (FCCs) and highlight FCCs that are of concern because of their known hazard properties. Further, we identify relevant data gaps for FCCs found in food contact materials and foods. This article improves the understanding of food contact materials’ contribution to chemical exposure for the human population and highlights opportunities for improving public health."

Poised to be first widely consumed gene-edited animals, virus-resistant pigs are about to be marketed

Good news! When will humans receive virus resistant genetic editing!

"UK biotechnology company Genus plc is closer to bringing gene-edited meat to the dinner table. The firm has used CRISPR-based gene editing to produce and scale up four lines of commercial pigs that are resistant to a virus which causes porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome and costs the pork industry an estimated US$2.7 billion annually. The edit did not introduce DNA from another organism, but modified the pig’s existing DNA, creating changes that could happen naturally, says animal geneticist Alison Van Eenennaam. Genus plc hopes that the US Food and Drug Administration will approve the animals for human consumption by the end of the year."

Possibly Pervasive Food Poisoning in Africa

I bet this is not a new calamity affecting people living in Africa! But it is probably seriously underreported!

"Food poisoning has become a persistent menace in West Africa. Cases in Ghana, for example, now contribute to 10% of outpatient hospital visits.
One recent study found ~2,000 Ghanaians suffered from various forms of food poisoning between 2013 and 2021, and 36 people died in related outbreaks.
Those figures are likely an undercount, advocates say—with one calling the problem “a ticking time bomb.”

The causes are numerous:
  • Toxic pesticides on crops: In the Ivory Coast, 9 people died and 70+ villagers were sickened after eating corn suspected to have been tainted by pesticides.
  • Poor food hygiene: Food is often unsafely stored and sold at markets, researchers say—with some vendors even openly selling rotten produce.
  • Little consumer awareness about unsafe foods, or how to get help if they get food poisoning.
  • No robust surveillance system to track and trace sources of poisoning incidents.

China kritisiert Putin wegen Getreideabkommen

India has Banned Rice Exports, Here's Why with Palki Sharma

This is very serious stuff! A full blown World War III might be in the making! Russia's blockade of Ukrainian grain exports has already second round effects besides rising global food prices. When will the Russian people finally get rid of Putin the Terrible. He is the last czar, a war criminal, and a megalomaniac.

Explained: What is the Ukraine grain deal? A question of World War III

The Ukraine is the breadbasket to the world! If Putin the Terrible plays hardball on this issue it might have the potential to turn the Russo-Ukrainian War, which is already a World War III by any other name, into a open World War III. Let's hope he comes to his senses!

Will there be a major famine in 2023 due to the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war?

I am speculating here, but what will be the impact of this war on the global food supply this year? I am afraid, it could be dire!

The Ukraine was the bread basket or fourth largest exporter of wheat in the world before the war!

To the best of my knowledge, this issue appears as if it has not yet been really addressed at least not in public! Are they quiet about this subject for fear of panic etc.?

The list of war crimes committed by Putin the Terrible is long and getting longer! Let the international war crimes tribunal against Putin the Terrible and his accomplices begin immediately, preferably in Nuremberg, Germany! (in absentia or not).
