When women researchers publish, media attention doesn’t always follow. Really!

Another fine example of junk journalism produced by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)!

This seems to be a popular subject as there is another similar research paper published March 2024 (see below).

Since I study machine learning & AI research, I can say that of the 451 leading researchers that I follow only 14 or 3% are women and I give female researchers a preferential treatment. Just to give one example of the reality regarding a very hot research area.

"... But a new study finds that benefit goes disproportionately to men, potentially widening existing gender gaps and shaping public perceptions of who counts as a researcher. In an analysis of 1.2 million news stories about scholarly research, men-led papers were found to receive more attention overall and were heavily overrepresented in the top 5% of most covered studies. Women-led papers, on the other hand, clustered at the bottom. ..."

From the abstract:
"Media coverage shapes public perception of science, yet gender bias can compromise its objectivity. Based on 1 million papers with 1.2 million media citations, we examine how the corresponding author’s gender relates to media citing scientific research. We reveal that more women-led papers receive at least one media mention in women-underrepresented fields, but they are cited less frequently across all fields. Women authors are underrepresented in national outlets and are more often reported by liberal media. Sentiment analysis shows that men-led papers are more often associated with positive sentiment in news text, while women-led papers elicit more negative sentiment."

Female teacher in Texas only gets 60 days in prison for raping 13 year boy and student

This is another Me Too event! You can also bet that such sexual abuse and including rape of boys by females is underreported.

Such light sentencing what kind of gender bias/gap is this?

"... abused the student for three years, starting when the student was in the 6th grade and was approximately 12 years old. Bodine raped the student when he turned 13, and admitted to doing so both in her car and in her classroom... She later started texting the student and sending pornographic photographs of herself (between 25 and 40 in total by her own admission)."

FBI's most wanted woman: Missing Cryptoqueen Ruja Ignatova

Another me too moment! Only about 5% of the world prison population are women. This represents a serious case of gender bias and misandry! (Caution: Irony)

What country prisoner statistics can tell us

When I wrote a blog post yesterday about transgender prisoners in California yesterday I was totally surprised how few female prisoners there are compared to male prisoners. Only less than 4% of all prisoners in California are female.

It turns out that on a global scale only about 5% of all prisoners are female. This is a huge gender inequality. Are women indeed so much less prone to commit crimes? Are women not often companions of male criminals, but they are not involved in the crimes? I was a bit stunned about this heavily lopsided statistics. Is this mostly due to the tendency that women commit less severe crimes than men. For arguments sake, from a feminism perspective, does this mean the patriarchy is so chivalrous as to protect women from prison convictions?

Another surprising fact seems to be that quite a few countries, in particular European countries have a large portion of foreigners as prisoners. A very special case is Switzerland with 70% foreign prisoners. This seems to be peculiar too.

As far as the United States is concerned it stands out with 629 prisoners per 100,000 population that is about 4 times the global average. Is that one of the reasons why so called progressive district attorneys are soft on crime?
At least in the U.S. about 10% of all prisoners are female.

Notes on the data:

  1. Source: https://www.prisonstudies.org/
  2. I selected primarily countries with large population. Less so for Europe
  3. 100K means 100,000
  4. There are some questions about how foreign prisoners are defined on a country by country basis
  5. Some of the country data is several years old
  6. Some countries appear to report 0% for juveniles/minors
  7. The accuracy or reliability of the data maybe in doubt for some of the countries
  8. Argentina and South Africa have both 235 prisoners per 100,000 population. This not my mistake.
