The Hippocratic Oath under stress in our times

Perhaps never before in the last 2000 years or so were medical doctors more challenged to live up to this famous, ancient oath, then since the beginning of the 20th century.

Just to name a few challenges by keyword (no order or importance implied): radioactivity, ABC weapons, Holocaust, synthetic opioids, gender dysphoria, overmedicalization,  capital punishment etc.

In my opinion: Too often, I observe that individual medical doctors even repeatedly and seriously fail to live up to their Hippocratic Oath!

In my view such procedures should generally be prohibited with as few medically necessary exceptions as possible!

Without reading a lot it is not clear whether the study authors mixed in their gender affirming surgeries other cosmetic surgeries not really related to transgender.

Objective  To examine trends in inpatient and outpatient GAS procedures in the US and to explore the temporal trends in the types of GAS performed across age groups.

Design, Setting, and Participants  This cohort study includes data from 2016 to 2020 in the Nationwide Ambulatory Surgery Sample and the National Inpatient Sample. Patients with diagnosis codes for gender identity disorder, transsexualism, or a personal history of sex reassignment were identified, and the performance of GAS, including breast and chest procedures, genital reconstructive procedures, and other facial and cosmetic surgical procedures, were identified.

Main Outcome Measures

Weighted estimates of the annual number of inpatient and outpatient procedures performed and the distribution of each class of procedure overall and by age were analyzed.

Results

A total of 48 019 patients who underwent GAS were identified, including 25 099 (52.3%) who were aged 19 to 30 years. The most common procedures were breast and chest procedures, which occurred in 27 187 patients (56.6%), followed by genital reconstruction (16 872 [35.1%]) and other facial and cosmetic procedures (6669 [13.9%]). The absolute number of GAS procedures rose from 4552 in 2016 to a peak of 13 011 in 2019 and then declined slightly to 12 818 in 2020. Overall, 25 099 patients (52.3%) were aged 19 to 30 years, 10 476 (21.8%) were aged 31 to 40, and 3678 (7.7%) were aged 12 to 18 years. When stratified by the type of procedure performed, breast and chest procedures made up a greater percentage of the surgical interventions in younger patients, while genital surgical procedures were greater in older patients.

Conclusions and Relevance
Performance of GAS has increased substantially in the US. Breast and chest surgery was the most common group of procedures performed. The number of genital surgical procedures performed increased with increasing age."

Some doctors think they have a license to do anything

Some or a few doctors are monsters! They too willingly and readily violate their and ancient Hippocratic Oath (Do no harm!)!

Case in point: Any doctor who thinks he/she has a calling/mission or is all to willing or way too easy going to commit genital mutilation of teenagers (double mastectomy, converting the vagina or penis) in the name of "gender dysphoria" or as part of the horrific euphemism "gender affirming care" is dubious! This is unconscionable!

Unfortunately, Dr. Mengele was no exception nor a historical aberration!

Lessons from polio about vaccinating kids against Covid-19. Really!

What a ridiculous opinion piece written by the dean of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University, and a pediatrician and professor of epidemiology! When I first saw this headline, I almost chocked! What! Or was the headline chosen for attention grabbing purposes. Bad choice!

I don't want to call a dean of a medical school a quack, but if she writes opinion pieces like that, she comes close.

With respect to children, any association of polio with Covid-19, beyond that both disease are caused by a virus and that effective vaccinations are available for both, is utmost ludicrous if not irresponsible! This is scaremongering, plain and simple! Or speculating more nefariously, these doctors may be paid for this piece by business interests!

Compared to polio, Covid-19 is for most children fairly harmless! Natural immunity can handle it easily! We knew shortly after the first outbreak of Covid-19 that, very fortunately, children and healthy adults up to age 50-60 have little to fear other than getting something like a severe cold.

Blood abnormalities found in people with Long Covid. Really!

Long Covid is the latest obsession, alarmism, and hysteria of the medical profession! 

Let's not forget for one moment that Covid-19 is big business! Plus, Covid-19 is overall a fairly harmless disease compared to plagues of the  past!

It is so easy to explain all kinds of medical conditions by pointing to a previous Covid-19 infection! Like any weather condition is now automatically blamed on Climate Change.

What they don't tell you e.g. is what was the status or health condition of the patients before they contracted Covid-19? These studies rely on so called control groups, but not on the actual history of the affected patients itself.

They also mention some anecdotal evidence, like a patient's self reported "that their once-normal gym workouts were too exhausting to resume.". This is not hard evidence!

"SARS-CoV-2 infection can result in the development of a constellation of persistent sequelae following acute disease called post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) or Long COVID1–3. Individuals diagnosed with Long COVID frequently report unremitting fatigue, post-exertional malaise, and a variety of cognitive and autonomic dysfunctions; however, the basic biological mechanisms responsible for these debilitating symptoms are unclear. Here, 215 individuals were included in an exploratory, cross-sectional study to perform multi-dimensional immune phenotyping in conjunction with machine learning methods to identify key immunological features distinguishing Long COVID. Marked differences were noted in specific circulating myeloid and lymphocyte populations relative to matched control groups, as well as evidence of elevated humoral responses directed against SARS-CoV-2 among participants with Long COVID. Further, unexpected increases were observed in antibody responses directed against non-SARS-CoV-2 viral pathogens, particularly Epstein-Barr virus. Analysis of circulating immune mediators and various hormones also revealed pronounced differences, with levels of cortisol being uniformly lower among participants with Long COVID relative to matched control groups. Would it not be preferable to expand the capacity of medical schools in Israel? I think so and it would be smarter and more rewarding!
