Windows on the World restaurant changed New York City before 9/11

This is a nice contribution by the WSJ to the 25th anniversary of 9/11!

I had forgotten about this restaurant at the top of the WTC!

"Not only was it a culinary juggernaut, but the sky-high restaurant—soaring more than 100 stories above the city in the North Tower of the World Trade Center—shifted the city’s culture. Famed graphic designer Milton Glaser designed the venue to be “a journey to the promised land, an adventure in imagination, the pursuit of the unexpected.” ..."

The leaders of India and Kazakhstan recently made unusually direct remarks to the Russian president about ending the war with the Ukraine

Good news! However, will this have an impact on Putin the Terrible?

Will the Russian oligarchs be impressed?

Hopefully, the domestic and international pressure on the megalomaniac and war criminal Putin the Terrible is mounting!

"At a heavily scripted [SCO] summit in Central Asia recently [end of August], Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared to break from the choreography momentarily to chastise President Vladimir Putin of Russia, a country that has been a close partner of New Delhi since the Soviet era.

It was time “to move on from an endless war to an end of war,” he told an expressionless Putin, seated next to him in an ornate reception room at the summit in Kyrgyzstan. ..."

"In a face-to-face meeting, Kazakh President Qasym-Zhomart Toqaev told Vladimir Putin that it was time to freeze Russia's war in Ukraine. The appeal to the Russian leader came at a summit in Omsk on July 25. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later said "a freeze as such is impossible," adding, "The main condition is that we must achieve our goals." Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha welcomed the Kazakh leader's efforts calling it "a realistic, timely, and wise message." ..."

Ukraine is considering legalizing its porn industry to fund its defense budget

Headline of the day! Necessity is the mother of invention.

"Ukrainian authorities have been unable to curtail a vast and lucrative pornography industry, which officials say operates with the protection of corrupt police. In a push to legalize porn in Ukraine, one lawmaker argues that doing so wouldn’t only help the fight against corruption, but would also raise up to $25 million a year in tax revenue—enough to pay for 30,000 drones for the war with Russia."

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is using coffee, softball and speed dating to convert the curious and win new members

No surprise! DSA has to compensate with feel good for an offensive agenda!

When will the spook of DSA be over?

"The Democratic Socialists of America have an endless buffet of social events to attract new members and more closely bind existing ones to the movement. Across the country, fast-growing chapters host barbecues, beach days, running clubs, happy hours, karaoke and even “Socialist Speed Dating.” The goal is to turn the “DSA-curious” into active members."

AI is turning everyday retail investors into mini quant funds

Good news!

"Americans are vibe-coding trading algorithms and handing over their stock portfolios to AI agents that can buy and sell assets on their own. For the retail crowd, sophisticated strategies were once accessible only to the tech-savvy few. Now, AI assistants can build an automated strategy from simple written prompts, allowing traders to crunch numbers at a superhuman scale without even watching the market. But skeptics worry the technology could expose less-experienced investors to new dangers."

Russia is trying to wear down Ukrainians with nearly continuous airstrikes by new, faster drones

Just how nasty is Putin the Terrible?

"The new generation of jet-powered Geran drones reaches speeds of about 300 miles an hour, roughly three times faster than previous versions of the drone, making them harder to intercept.
Russia is also shifting away from night barrages toward piecemeal attacks throughout the day. The new tactics are further disrupting life in Ukraine."

Biggest Oil Deal in World History: U.S. Secures Majority Control of 65 Billion Barrels in Venezuela

Update of 8/30/2026: "President Trump spent months declaring his ouster of Venezuela’s leader had secured the country’s oil for the U.S. When American energy companies resisted investing at the speed and scale he wanted, his administration devised an extraordinary solution to turn his vision into reality: make the U.S. government itself an investor." (Source)

This was one of the hottest news items of the past week!

Could history see this event to be similar to the Louisiana or Alaska Purchase?

Caveat I am not familiar with the details of the deal.

"... Structure: The arrangement sets up a joint venture between the U.S. government and a private operator, granting a long-term concession (initially reported as a 100-year framework spanning 25 to 100 years for specific operations) across 17 strategic oil fields.U.S.
Stake: The U.S. secures a 55% effective output share—including equity and the right to buy oil at cost—with acquired crude directed toward the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve and the military. ...
Goals: Proponents state the arrangement will draw billions in private investment to rebuild Venezuela's degraded petroleum sector ..." (Google Search)

"... Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez welcomed the deal, which is expected to bring about $209bn to the state’s treasury. ...

For Venezuela, Rubio said the deal would bring nearly $100bn in private investment, support thousands of high-paying jobs and help rebuild the country’s economy.
..."

"... Rodriguez, who is Maduro's former vice-president and who the US backed following his capture, said on Saturday that the energy agreement with the US would remain in force for 25 years.

She said it would target an increase in crude output to 1.5 million barrels per day and preserve the country's sovereignty over its natural resources. ...

It apparently grants the US direct governance over a foreign country's sovereign national resources and appears to be wider in scope than the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority's control over Iraq's oil revenues after Saddam Hussein was ousted in an American-led invasion in 2003. ..."

"In a bombshell announcement, President Trump declared that the United States has entered into the biggest oil deal in world history. At his direction, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth — working with Venezuela’s Interim President Delcy Rodriguez and through a partnership with private business — secured majority U.S. control of more than 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves in Venezuela at no cost to the American taxpayer. The deal more than doubles American oil reserves, greatly increases domestic oil supply, and is projected to substantially lower gas prices for Americans long into the future, while setting Venezuela on a course toward prosperity. The administration called it a Historic Transaction that strengthens the growing relationship between Venezuela and the United States. ..."

China’s yuan has been systematically and chronically undervalued by Chinese currency manipulation

Serious stuff! This is clearly unfair international competition!

If so, then this is another, major reason for Western countries to wake up quickly!

So maybe President Trump was also in this respect justified to impose tariffs on China.

"Yes, major financial institutions and international organizations estimate that China’s yuan is significantly undervalued.
According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the currency is roughly 21% cheaper than its economic fundamentals imply, while Goldman Sachs and independent trade experts place the figure even higher, between 25% and 35%.

While China historically used explicit currency manipulation, its [current] undervaluation stems from a mix of domestic economic factors and subtle state management.

The Historical Context: Deliberate Devaluation

From the 1980s through the early 2000s, China openly kept the yuan weak to fuel its rapid industrialization.

The Mechanism: The People's Bank of China (PBOC) bought up incoming foreign currency (like U.S. dollars) from exports and sold yuan to keep its own currency artificially cheap.

The Result: This accumulated nearly $4 trillion in foreign reserves by 2014, ensuring Chinese exports remained highly competitive globally." (Google Search)

"Four decades after the historic Plaza Accord, world leaders are facing growing pressure for a new currency agreement to tackle China’s undervalued yuan and massive trade surplus.
With Beijing’s export drive threatening industrial bases globally, currency intervention may be the only remaining way to force an economic rebalancing, Greg Ip argues."

The firm recently received preliminary regulatory approval to launch a national trust bank to manage USD1, a stablecoin with $4 billion in market value."

"... Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan and co-investors are behind an entity that owns the largest stake—49%—in the holding company that World Liberty Financial created to house its banking venture, according to people familiar with the matter. The sheikh last year backed a $500 million investment into World Liberty Financial in exchange for a 49% stake in the company, The Wall Street Journal previously reported. ..."

From Gulf of America to Lake of America or how President Trump changes geography by executive order

This US President and multiple assassination survivor is having too much fun in office!

"The executive order requires that the U.S. Interior Department update geographic information systems. It’s expected that official U.S. documents and communications will include the new name; it likely won’t be recognized by Canada. It isn’t the first time Trump has taken out his frustrations on America’s neighbors by renaming geography—in January, he renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”"

How Xi Jinping Steamrolls Dissent With Tactics From Stalin and Mao

This should be an interesting article by the Wall Street Journal!

When will China become a democracy to compete with the largest democracy on Earth, i.e. India?

Xi Jinping (age 73) is the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party since 2012.

"Chinese leader Xi Jinping is employing the sort of autocratic tactics once wielded by Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong to stamp out opposition and stack the leadership with acolytes as he prepares to extend his reign.

In a throwback to the most powerful Communist leaders of the 20th century, Xi has purged dozens of senior officials—even his own protégés—overseen the growth of a cult of personality and demanded absolute loyalty. ..."

Kristi Noem is out, but her new, expensive government jet stays

Maybe she is out, because she did not want to share this jet? Just kidding!

"The White House is hanging onto the controversial $70 million jet Kristi Noem leased during her tenure as DHS secretary, according to a department spokeswoman and other officials familiar with the matter.

The administration plans to use the plane, which is nicer than most other government jets, for travel by select cabinet secretaries and Melania Trump, some of the officials said. The White House referred a request for comment to DHS. Trump fired Noem last month. Some administration officials and outside supporters have questioned using ICE money—bolstered for Trump’s promised mass deportation—for a plane that isn’t going to be used for immigration enforcement."
