"Federal agents arrested the superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools in Iowa on Friday after they discovered he was in the country illegally with a deportation order—and in possession of a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash, and a hunting knife.

Ian Andre Roberts, originally from Guyana, has a previous weapons possession charge from February 2020. An immigration judge issued a “final order of removal” for Roberts in May 2024.

“How this illegal alien was hired without work authorization, a final order of removal, and a prior weapons charge is beyond comprehension and should alarm the parents of that school district,” said Sam Olson, the director of the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations St. Paul Field Office. 

Roberts entered the U.S. on a student visa in 1999. Since 2023, he has served as superintendent of Iowa’s largest school district and previously was a principal and school turnaround leader in Washington, DC, Baltimore, and St. Louis."

"Iowa’s General Assembly on Wednesday approved a bill that would let residents carry and purchase guns without a permit.

House File 756 passed 60–37, with all Republicans voting for it, along with Democrat state Rep. Wes Breckenridge.

The bill was immediately messaged to the state Senate, where Republicans have a majority and previously passed a similar piece of legislation through a committee. ...

Under the legislation, that requirement would be annulled. Individuals would still have to follow federal law and go through an instant background check to buy from licensed sellers each time they purchase a gun. They could choose to get a permit instead, which is issued by sheriff departments and is good for five years.

Sales between individuals wouldn’t require a background check. Additionally, to carry a weapon, people would not need to have a permit. ..."
