The largest orbital compute cluster of 10 satellites is open for business

Good news!

"For all the hype about data centers in space, there just aren’t very many GPUs up there. As that starts to change, the near-term business of orbital compute is starting to take shape.

The largest compute cluster currently in orbit was launched by Canada’s Kepler Communications in January, and boasts about 40 Nvidia Orin edge processors onboard 10 operational satellites, all linked together by laser communications links.

The company now has 18 customers, and announced its newest on Monday — Sophia Space, a startup that will test the software for its unique orbital computer onboard Kepler’s constellation. ...

In the new partnership, Sophia will upload its proprietary operating system to one of Kepler’s satellites and attempt to launch and configure it across six GPUs on two spacecraft. ..."

Size of governments across Canada on the rise; represented 44% of the economy in 2024

Bad news!

"
  • This bulletin measures the size of government in Canada, by province, based on total government spending as a share of the economy as well as public sector employment as a share of total employment, between 2007 and 2024.
  • ... the size of government in Canada, by province, based on total government spending as a share of the economy as well as public sector employment as a share of total employment, between 2007 and 2024.
  • ... the size of government relative to the economy has an effect on economic growth and social progress. This makes it important to measure and track, especially given the scope of government spending and intervention during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • In 2024, the size of government relative to the economy among the provinces ranged from a high of 61.2% in Nova Scotia to a low of 30.4% in Alberta. For Canada as a whole, the size of government represented 43.6% of the economy.
  • For Canada as a whole, the size of government relative to the economy increased from 40.0% in 2022 to 43.6% in 2024.
  • From 2007 to 2024, government spending as a share of the economy increased in nine out of 10 provinces. Between 2019 and 2024, all 10 provinces experienced an increase in the size of government.
  • For Canada as a whole, public-sector employment represented 21.5% of total employment. From 2007 to 2024, public-sector employment as a share of total employment increased in every province.
  • Provinces in the Maritimes tended to have larger governments relative to the economy, which employed a higher share of total workers, than provinces in western Canada. However, in general the size of government has been increasing across the country.

Why some moments endure: Episodic memory encoding fluctuates with brain's theta rhythms

Amazing stuff!

"... One memory-related theoretical framework, rooted in behavioral science, is the Separate Phases for Encoding and Retrieval (SPEAR) model. This model outlines the idea that the human brain rapidly switches between the encoding of information and the retrieval of stored information. ...

Researchers ... recently carried out a study aimed at testing this theory and the possibility that memory processes change moment-by-moment following this rhythmic pattern. Their findings ... are aligned with the SPEAR model's predictions and suggest that the brain is only disposed to learn new information during brief time windows. ..."

From the abstract:
"Why do some experiences endure in memory better than others? Here we explore the possibility that learning fluctuates rhythmically several times per second, with fortuitously timed experiences being more memorable. Although such fleeting opportunities for encoding would evade our awareness, they are predicted by a prominent model describing how theta rhythms in the brain coordinate memory—the Separate Phases for Encoding and Retrieval (SPEAR) model.
In a preregistered study, we adapted a dense sampling approach to reconstruct the millisecond time course of memory encoding in n = 125 participants. We found that memory encoding fluctuated at a theta rhythm (3–10 Hz), that these rhythms were not a by-product of rhythmic attention and that—like theta rhythms in the brain—memory rhythms were modulated by putative markers of acetylcholine.
Our findings provide behavioural evidence consistent with the SPEAR model of episodic memory."

Ukraine appoints Canadian MP Chrystia Freeland as economic adviser, she is also the Special Representative for the Reconstruction of Ukraine for Canada

Curious stuff! Is she a party girl? 😊
"Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X Monday he has appointed former Liberal cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland as an economic development adviser. The announcement raises questions about her current role as a member of Parliament in the federal government."

Sony Buys Peanuts for $457 Million

Another headline of the day! It must be Christmas season! I loved to watch the Charlie Brown cartoons.

"Sony has agreed to pay $457 million to double its stake in Peanuts Holdings LLC, giving it 80% ownership of Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the whole Peanuts cartoon gang created by cartoonist Charles Schulz.

The Japanese entertainment giant is buying the 40% stake it doesn’t own from Canadian entertainment company WildBrain, which also owns the Teletubbies and Strawberry Shortcake brands. The deal announced Friday values the Peanuts business at more than $1 billion, with the Schulz family retaining its current 20% stake. ..."

How much is Canada' healthcare deteriorating?

What is wrong with the chart?

  1. Only one historical year was selected for comparison (cherry picking?)
  2. Lack of a short explanation why 1993

Canada: Examining the Growth of Public Sector Employment Since 2015

Bad news! Big and bigger government in Canada! Headed in the wrong direction!

"...
  • The public sector in Canada added 950,000 jobs between 2015 and 2024. This accounted for roughly 30% of all employment gains.
  • Public sector employment as a share of total employment has grown from 19.7% in 2015 to 21.5% in 2024. Moreover, public sector employment grew at an annual average rate of 2.7% per year, while private sector employment grew at 1.7% per year.

US Homeland Security Secretary Noem signs deal with Canada & Finland for 'Icebreaker' boats to defend Arctic

Good news!

Somebody ought to tell Kristi Noem that the Antarctica, not the Arctica is the last frontier!

"U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Tuesday signed a deal with Canada and Finland – as part of the three countries' "Icebreaker" boat collaboration – to defend the Arctic as Russia seeks to expand in the region.

The partnership is officially known as the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort and started in July 2024 to try to outpace Russia in its expansion in the Arctic ... The U.S. and Canada will be able to meet the partnership's demands with Finland’s shipbuilding expertise. ...

In the deal signed by Noem, Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman, and Finnish Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto, there will be 11 new icebreakers built over the next several years. ..."
