"FBI Director Kash Patel this week returned looted cultural artifacts from Indonesia's Papua region to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto while on an overseas trip to the country.

Indonesian officials told reporters that the handover took place Wednesday at Subianto’s residence in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The return was part of an ongoing effort to recover and return cultural artifacts.

“Besides our official discussions, Patel also brought Indonesian cultural artifacts as part of cooperation between the Indonesian government, through the Culture Ministry, and the FBI to return cultural objects that had been illegally smuggled into the United States,” Indonesian Culture Minister Fadli Zon told reporters after the meeting.

The items included stone axe heads and ceremonial objects traced to the Dani, Asmat and Sentani tribes, which Zon claimed hold immense historical and cultural value for Indonesia, according to Antara News in Indonesia.

The foreign minister noted that the FBI has been working with the country on its repatriation efforts and previously helped recover bronze statues and objects from several other cultural sites. ..."

If the dates hold up, they would predate the oldest known Neanderthal paintings in Europe by about 1000 years. "The Indonesian archipelago is host to some of the earliest known rock art in the world. Previously, secure Pleistocene dates were reported for figurative cave art and stencils of human hands in two areas in Indonesia—the Maros-Pangkep karsts in the southwestern peninsula of the island of Sulawesi and the Sangkulirang-Mangkalihat region of eastern Kalimantan, Borneo.

Here we describe a series of early dated rock art motifs from the southeastern portion of Sulawesi. Among this assemblage of Pleistocene (and possibly more recent) motifs, laser-ablation U-series (LA-U-series) dating of calcite overlying a hand stencil from Liang Metanduno on Muna Island yielded a U-series date of 71.6 ± 3.8 thousand years ago (ka), providing a minimum-age constraint of 67.8 ka for the underlying motif. The Muna minimum (67.8 ± 3.8 ka) exceeds the published minimum for rock art in Maros-Pangkep by 16.6 thousand years (kyr) (ref. 5) and is 1.1 kyr greater than the published minimum for a hand stencil from Spain attributed to Neanderthals, which until now represented the oldest demonstrated minimum-age constraint for cave art worldwide.

Moreover, the presence of this extremely old art in Sulawesi suggests that the initial peopling of Sahul about 65 ka7 involved maritime journeys between Borneo and Papua, a region that remains poorly explored from an archaeological perspective."

"When you shine a flashlight into a glass of water, the beam bends. That simple observation, familiar since ancient times, hides one of the oldest puzzles in physics: what really happens to the momentum of light when it enters a medium? ...

For more than a century, scientists have debated whether light's momentum inside matter is larger or smaller than in empty space. The two competing answers are known as the Minkowski momentum, which is larger and seems to explain how light bends, and the Abraham momentum, which is smaller and matches the actual push or pull that light exerts on the medium.

The controversy never went away because experiments seemed to confirm both sides. Some setups measured the larger Minkowski value, others supported Abraham, leaving physicists with a paradox. ...

In a linear dielectric medium with refractive index 𝑛, the momentum is predicted to be smaller by a factor of 𝑛 according to Abraham and larger by the same factor according to Minkowski.

By studying the coupled dynamics of electromagnetic waves and dipoles in a dielectric medium, we show that the change in momentum of the dipole, expressed by the Lorentz force, corresponds to the Abraham momentum and is given by the expectation value of the spin-projected momentum vector. On the other hand, the Minkowski momentum is obtained as the magnitude of the spin-projected momentum vector from the energy-momentum dispersion relation derived by diagonalizing the coupled Hamiltonian and determines the direction of refraction in accordance with Snell's law.
