Iranians rally outside US embassies, consulates around the world

Good news! Why is this apparently not or more reported by Western media so far?

Whether the Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, the son of the former Shah of Iran, is a good option for forming the next government of Iran has to be seen. He might be an important person to help form the next government.

"Hundreds of thousands of Iranians across the diaspora rallied outside US embassies and consulates in more than 20 countries on Saturday, calling on the international community to maintain pressure on the Islamic Republic and support the Iranian people.

The coordinated demonstrations, held in at least 34 cities across Europe, Asia, and North America, followed a call by Iranian opposition figure Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. ..."

Romania reruns controversial election after earlier vote annulled

What is going on in Romania?

"Romanians are trying again to elect a new president, six months after the first attempt ended in scandal and confusion.

A radical outsider with mystical leanings, Calin Georgescu, came first on 24 November, but that result was annulled over allegations of campaign fraud and Russian interference. ...

If no candidate wins over 50% of the vote, a run-off between the first two candidates will be held on 18 May. ...

The result is awaited nervously in European capitals, Washington, Kyiv and Moscow. Romania is an important transit route for weapon systems and ammunition to Ukraine. The country has a US missile defence shield at Deveselu, and three major airbases from which Nato flies air policing missions up to the border of Ukraine and Moldova, and out over the Black Sea.

Ukraine exports 70% of its grain down the Black Sea coast, through Romanian territorial waters, towards Istanbul. The Romanian navy demines those waters, and the Romanian air force trains Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16s. The Trump administration is reassessing its commitment to Romania. A visa-waiver agreement was abruptly cancelled on the eve of the election. ...

But Romania finally joined the Schengen land-borders on 1 January, ...

Many in Romania's large diaspora - a million are registered to vote - have already cast their ballots, especially in Spain, Italy, Germany and the UK. They are invisible in opinion polls, and could easily sway the final result. ..."

Syria just hosted its first international tech conference in 50 years

Good news! The Syrian diaspora to the rescue!

Hopefully, the future of the people of Syria will be brighter after five decades of dictatorship and a decade long civil war under the Assad regime.

"... a group of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and tech leaders gathered in Damascus last weekend for a one-of-a-kind event. For the first time in 50 years, a free Syria hosted an independent tech conference, as the conflict-ravaged country looks to rebuild its economy and infrastructure from the devastation of a 13-year-long civil war.

The two-day SYNC 25 conference, organized by a group of Syrian-Americans working in Silicon Valley, included workshops and discussions on artificial intelligence and data security, among other tech-related topics. The program aimed to connect Silicon Valley with Syria’s emerging tech ecosystem. ..."

"SYNC ’25 is a two-day event where Silicon Valley Syrians join Syrians on the ground to spark a movement of connection, collaboration, and cultivation. Together, we’ll reimagine Syria’s tech future."

Will Syria's diaspora step up and help to rebuild Syria?

What will the next government of Syria be like?

Will Israel be involved? It should!

"... Now, the unimaginable has happened. Assad has fled to Russia. His regime has crumbled. Now, Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa must lead a nation struggling to rise from its ashes. Millions of Syrians, including my own friends and family, are beginning their journeys home. Damascus, once silenced by fear, is alive again with the sounds of returnees reclaiming their city and their future.

But the road ahead is fraught with challenges. The vacuum left by Assad risks being filled by extremism or chaos. Yet, I believe in the unity of the Syrian people. After decades of division and 13 years of brutal war, we have endured enough. This is our chance to build something new—something lasting.

Here in the United States, nearly 200,000 Syrian Americans stand ready to help. ..."

Defeating Hezbollah Inside Lebanon Is Only Half the Battle (the other half is the large Lebanese diaspora) by Michael Rubin

Recommendable! Here is some more background about these Hezbollah terrorists, which is perhaps not very well known.

"... Lebanon’s greatest export has always been its people. Historically, the country’s Shi’ite community was largely feudal. Shi’ites were subsistence farmers with little hope for political power or advancement. In The Innocents Abroad, American writer Mark Twain described his 1867 travels through Lebanon to Palestine; the Shi’ites whom he surely saw did not merit his inclusion. With little prospect for upward mobility, many Shi’ites emigrated to engage in business and trade, especially elsewhere in the Middle East, Africa, and South America. Today, the Lebanese diaspora population just in Brazil and Argentina is equal to Lebanon’s population. Not all Lebanese emigrants were Shi’ite, of course, but they were disproportionately so.

Into the mid-twentieth century, the lack of domestic prospects led Shi’ites who remained in Lebanon to embrace either Marxism or Arab nationalism. As the late historian Fouad Ajami explained in The Vanished Imam, Iraqi Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah (1935-2010) sought to channel Shi’ite identity and discord into Shi’ism. He became the spiritual leader of Hezbollah. His influence extended past Lebanon, however, to the Shi’ite communities abroad.  ... Many have close ties to those who remained inside Lebanon. As Hezbollah’s tentacles grew through the 1980s and 1990s, the Lebanese diaspora became an important component of Hezbollah’s broader network.

In the Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea, for example, Hezbollah launders drug money and engages in organized crime. Between 2007 and 2011, Hezbollah operatives ran a scheme to ship used and stolen cars to West Africa, with Hezbollah then using profits to fund its military operations. The Lebanese Shi’ite diaspora in the United States also ran a cigarette-smuggling scheme to fund the terror group.

Nor does the diaspora only support Hezbollah financially. Iran’s 1992 assassinations at the Mykonos Café relied on Lebanese sleeper agents, and the agents responsible for the Iran-sponsored 1994 attack on the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires also drew upon the Lebanese diaspora community in the “triangle border” area between Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.

In essence, there are two Hezbollahs—one in Lebanon and one spread out across the world. ...."

Weiterleben in Putins Russland – Ein Schweizer in Sibirien

Empfehlenswert!

Kyiv Targets Ukraine’s Beleaguered Diaspora of about 6 million living in Russia

This is big news! The population of the Ukraine is about 44 million.

"Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decree on protecting the rights of Ukrainians in Russia looks like a tit-for-tat response to Kremlin rhetoric on defending Russian-speakers in Ukraine. ...
The new presidential decree on the protection of the Ukrainian minority in Russia designates several Russian regions close to the Ukrainian border (including the Krasnodar, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, and Rostov regions) as territory “historically populated by Ukrainians,” and calls for the rights of the Ukrainian minority living there to develop their language and culture to be upheld.
How Ukraine actually intends to apply this policy in practice is unclear, but the propaganda value of the decree is plain to see: if Putin insists that Ukraine contains “Russian lands” unfairly “given away” by Lenin or Khrushchev, then two can play that game. ..."

"The Russian census identified that there were more than 5,864,000 Ukrainians living in Russia in 2015, representing over 4.01% of the total population of the Russian Federation  ..." (Wikipedia)

Amid Frontline Stalemate, Kyiv Targets Ukraine’s Beleaguered Diaspora in Russia - Carnegie Endowment for International Peace The harsh reality of war means that Russia’s Ukrainians are condemned to either assimilate fast or move back to their historical homeland, where they will inevitably fall under suspicion.

Indians in top leadership positions

It is absolutely astonishing how many Indians are in top leadership positions in various countries.

India also has the largest diaspora in the world with about 18 million people!

Just a short list (in no particular order and by no means complete):

  1. Prime Minister of the UK
  2. Mayor of London (slight correction, Pakistani background)
  3. CEO of Microsoft
  4. CEO of IBM
  5. CEO of Google/Alphabet
  6. Novartis
  7. Adobe
  8. Prime Minister of Portugal
  9. Minister of Defense, Canada
  10. Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Singapore

Mistress Kamala (U.S. Vice President) deserves a passing mention here!

Israel, through the lens of a new Indian immigrant

The love of food brings people from two ancient, still existing civilizations closer together! Both boast large diasporas and unique religions!

"If you’re craving falafel in Israel, you’ll find stands selling these fried chickpea balls everywhere. But if you’re craving the Indian cousin of falafel, pani puri, you may have to make it yourself.
Revital Moses, 28, stocks up on pani puri mix from a store in Tel Aviv that imports products from her native India. When she’s not in the mood to cook, she patronizes Indian restaurants run by fellow immigrants or by Israelis who traveled to India and fell in love with the cuisine. ..."

Meet the Cochin Jews - Israel’s oldest Indian community

Amazing stuff! Israel is perhaps one of the most diverse countries in world as far as its population is concerned due to e.g. the diaspora! It represents a true United Nations within one country! An extraordinary melting pot ("Ingathering of the Exiles" (קיבוץ גלויות))!

Recently, I have blogged here and here about the former prime minister of Israel, Golda Meir. She was born in Russia, raised in the United States, before she migrated to Israel.

Meet the Cochin Jews - Israel’s oldest Indian community - ISRAEL21c Recent attention has focused on the Bnei Menashe Indians who just arrived in Israel, but there’s an older Indian community that’s been here since the country was founded.
