The road to virtual immune cells

Good news!

"The idea of building a ‘digital twin’ of a cell that mimics its behaviour is not new, but the advancement of artificial intelligence and the rapid expansion of biological datasets is helping to make it a reality.
Capturing the activity of immune cells — and their ability to sense, interpret and respond to the environment — in this way could help reveal the intricacies of their responses and help design immune-based medicines.
In translational research, virtual immune cells could help find drug targets, improve the ability to modulate the immune system and support personalized therapies, write a group of pathologists and systems biologists."

Reverse engineering the sensory-motor control for schooling in zebrafish using virtual reality

Amazing stuff! This could be a breakthrough!

"... Now, using an immersive virtual reality (VR) setup, scientists have figured out the sensory-motor mechanism underlying this harmonious behavior.

While inside their 3D arena, which researchers dubbed “the Matrix,” individual zebrafish could interact with “holographic” projections of other fish. By analyzing the animals’ reactions and tweaking the movements of virtual “leader” fish, the team determined that “follower” fish used the perceived position—rather than the speed—of their neighbors to guide their own movements. “We were surprised by how little information the fish need to effectively coordinate movements within a school ,” ... Using this natural control law, the researchers programmed a variety of wheeled robots, drones, and robotic watercraft; they were able to follow targets just as well as robots programmed with an existing, state-of-the-art controller—at a fraction of the complexity. ..."

"To the point
  • Innovative method: A team of biologists and robotic engineers have developed a virtual reality system for fish to decipher how they school
  • Discovering nature’s algorithm: They uncovered the natural ‘control law’ that is used by zebrafish to coordinate behavior with others, a behavioral algorithm that has been tuned over millennia to facilitate effective collective motion.
  • Implications for robotics: They tested the natural control law in groups of robotic cars, drones and watercraft, demonstrating its potential for the control autonomous vehicles in the future.
... Using a virtual reality (VR) setup that mimics natural schooling, researchers placed individual juvenile zebrafish into networked arenas where each fish could freely interact with ‘holographic’ virtual conspecifics. Each virtual fish was a projection of a real fish, meaning that fish could swim and interact together in the same virtual world.
The fully immersive 3D environment lets researchers precisely manipulate visual stimuli and record how the fish respond. This high level of control allowed the scientists to isolate exactly which cues the fish were using to guide their interactions with other fish. In other words, they could reverse engineer the behavior of schooling in zebrafish to understand how fish solve the complex problem of coordinating their motion.

The solution, they discovered, was a simple and robust law based only on the perceived position, not the speed, of their neighbors to regulate their following behavior. ..."

From the abstract:
"Revealing the evolved mechanisms that give rise to collective behavior is a central objective in the study of cellular and organismal systems. In addition, understanding the algorithmic basis of social interactions in a causal and quantitative way offers an important foundation for subsequently quantifying social deficits.
Here, with virtual reality technology, we used virtual robot fish to reverse engineer the sensory-motor control of social response during schooling in a vertebrate model: juvenile zebrafish (Danio rerio).
In addition to providing a highly controlled means to understand how zebrafish translate visual input into movement decisions, networking our systems allowed real fish to swim and interact together in the same virtual world. Thus, we were able to directly test models of social interactions in situ.
A key feature of social response is shown to be single- and multitarget-oriented pursuit. This is based on an egocentric representation of the positional information of conspecifics and is highly robust to incomplete sensory input.
We demonstrated, including with a Turing test and a scalability test for pursuit behavior, that all key features of this behavior are accounted for by individuals following a simple experimentally derived proportional derivative control law, which we termed “BioPD.”
Because target pursuit is key to effective control of autonomous vehicles, we evaluated—as a proof of principle—the potential use of this simple evolved control law for human-engineered systems. In doing so, we found close-to-optimal pursuit performance in autonomous vehicle (terrestrial, airborne, and watercraft) pursuit while requiring limited system-specific tuning or optimization."

New job: Undercover content moderator to police the metaverse and virtual reality

In the age of augmented or virtual reality new jobs are created like this one!

I am sure this moderation can also be largely automated with the help of AI!

"... the forefront of a new field, VR and metaverse content moderation.
Digital safety in the metaverse has been off to a somewhat rocky start, with reports of sexual assaults, bullying, and child grooming—an issue that’s only becoming more urgent with Meta’s recent announcement that it is lowering the age minimum for its Horizon Worlds platform from 18 to 13.
Because traditional moderation tools, such as AI-enabled filters on certain words, don’t translate well to real-time immersive environments, [human moderators] are the primary way to ensure safety in the digital world. ..."

Engineers invent vertically stacked, full-color microscopic LEDs

Good news! This could be a significant breakthrough in display technology! When virtual reality becomes reality! 😊

"... But much like computer transistors, LEDs are reaching a limit to how small they can be while also performing effectively. This limit is especially noticeable in close-range displays such as augmented and virtual reality devices ...
Each stacked pixel can generate the full commercial range of colors and measures about 4 microns wide. The microscopic pixels, or “micro-LEDs,” can be packed to a density of 5,000 pixels per inch. ...
“With our vertical micro-LEDs, you could have a completely immersive experience and wouldn’t be able to distinguish virtual from reality.” ...
But micro-LED fabrication requires extreme accuracy, as microscopic pixels of red, green, and blue need to first be grown separately on wafers, then precisely placed on a plate, in exact alignment with each other in order to properly reflect and produce various colors and shades. Achieving such microscopic precision is a difficult task, and entire devices need to be scrapped if pixels are found to be out of place. ..."

From the abstract:
"Micro-LEDs (µLEDs) have been explored for augmented and virtual reality display applications that require extremely high pixels per inch and luminance. However, conventional manufacturing processes based on the lateral assembly of red, green and blue (RGB) µLEDs have limitations in enhancing pixel density. Recent demonstrations of vertical µLED displays have attempted to address this issue by stacking freestanding RGB LED membranes and fabricating top-down, but minimization of the lateral dimensions of stacked µLEDs has been difficult. Here we report full-colour, vertically stacked µLEDs that achieve, to our knowledge, the highest array density (5,100 pixels per inch) and the smallest size (4 µm) reported to date. This is enabled by a two-dimensional materials-based layer transfer technique that allows the growth of RGB LEDs of near-submicron thickness on two-dimensional material-coated substrates via remote or van der Waals epitaxy, mechanical release and stacking of LEDs, followed by top-down fabrication. The smallest-ever stack height of around 9 µm is the key enabler for record high µLED array density. We also demonstrate vertical integration of blue µLEDs with silicon membrane transistors for active matrix operation. These results establish routes to creating full-colour µLED displays for augmented and virtual reality, while also offering a generalizable platform for broader classes of three-dimensional integrated devices."

MIT: Technology that lets us speak to our dead relatives has arrived. Are we ready? Short answer: No

Just before Halloween 2022, MIT comes out with a creepy article!

The technology for virtual relatives is certainly not ready! However, in 5-10 years or so when more and more of our daily lives are digitally recorded and stored, more realistic virtual impersonations and multiple virtual coexisting personas are possible.

Longevity by advances in medicine and/or by virtual reality? The future will tell! 😊

"Technology for “talking” to people who’ve died has been a mainstay of science fiction for decades. It’s an idea that’s been peddled by charlatans and spiritualists for centuries. But now it’s becoming a reality—and an increasingly accessible one, thanks to advances in AI and voice technology.

MIT Technology Review’s news editor, Charlotte Jee, has written a thoughtful and haunting story about how this kind of technology might change the way we grieve and remember those we’ve lost. But, she explains, creating a virtual version of someone is an ethical minefield—especially if that person hasn’t been able to provide consent. ..."

Group Virtual Reality offers therapeutic potential with psychedelic and self-transcendent experiences

From virtual addiction to therapy! This sounds a bit nebulous to me!

Can virtual reality compete with or even supersede psychedelics like LSD or Psilocybin? Just the thought of it could make one hallucinate (just kidding).

Is this more like quackery or is there something about it? Could it mean that indeed human consciousness extends beyond one's physical body or that we can have out of body experiences?

By distributed, they mean that the participants in a VR session are geographically separated.

"How it works: Isness-D is designed for groups of four to five people, with each participant represented as a diffuse cloud of smoke with a ball of light right about where a person’s heart would be. The experience involves participants gathering in the same spot in the virtual space to overlap their diffuse bodies, making it impossible to tell where each person begins and ends. The resulting sense of deep connectedness and ego reduction mirrors feelings commonly brought about by a psychedelic experience.
Why it matters: Given that Isness-D elicited responses indistinguishable from those associated with medium doses of psychedelics, it could help to alleviate the symptoms of mental health conditions obsessive-compulsive disorder, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression, all of which psychedelic-assisted therapy has been remarkably good at easing."

From the abstract:
"With a growing body of research highlighting the therapeutic potential of experiential phenomenology which diminishes egoic identity and increases one’s sense of connectedness, there is significant interest in how to elicit such ‘self-transcendent experiences’ (STEs) in laboratory contexts. Psychedelic drugs (YDs) have proven particularly effective in this respect, producing subjective phenomenology which reliably elicits intense STEs. With virtual reality (VR) emerging as a powerful tool for constructing new perceptual environments, we describe a VR framework called ‘Isness-distributed’ (Isness-D) which harnesses the unique affordances of distributed multi-person VR to blur conventional self-other boundaries. Within Isness-D, groups of participants co-habit a shared virtual space, collectively experiencing their bodies as luminous energetic essences with diffuse spatial boundaries. It enables moments of ‘energetic coalescence’, a new class of embodied intersubjective experience where bodies can fluidly merge, enabling participants to include multiple others within their self-representation. To evaluate Isness-D, we adopted a citizen science approach, coordinating an international network of Isness-D 'nodes'. We analyzed the results (N = 58) using 4 different self-report scales previously applied to analyze subjective YD phenomenology (the inclusion of community in self scale, ego-dissolution inventory, communitas scale, and the MEQ30 mystical experience questionnaire). Despite the complexities associated with a distributed experiment like this, the Isness-D scores on all 4 scales were statistically indistinguishable from recently published YD studies, demonstrating that distributed VR can be used to design intersubjective STEs where people dissolve their sense of self in the connection to others."

The VR Tech Combatting Loneliness Among Seniors

Could be a great use for VR! However, I am not so sure that the current state of the VR technology can combat loneliness as it is still mostly single person experience. Nevertheless, it may help seniors to be more engaged and may improve mood etc.
