Trump administration unlocks Alaska energy with resolutions removing several 46th President-era roadblocks

Good news! Let the Alaska energy bonanza begin! Let's buy Greenland!

"On Monday, federal regulators approved the permits for an 800-mile pipeline that will transport natural gas from the North Slope to the Kenai Peninsula in the south-central part of Alaska  ...

On Dec. 5, Trump signed a Senate joint resolution, sponsored by Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, that overturned a []46th President]-era block on oil and gas drilling in nearly half of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, which covers approximately 13 million acres. ...

On Thursday, Trump also signed two joint resolutions repealing restrictions on oil and gas development in other parts of northern Alaska.

All three resolutions were signed under the Congressional Review Act, which allows Congress to block certain finalized federal regulations. ..."

Alaska’s new antimony mining rush

Good news!

"Until recently, antimony, which is often found in gold mines, was treated as detritus by gold miners. But that began changing last year, when China put in place heavy restrictions on exports of the element. That has led to prices quadrupling from two years ago, squeezing defense companies, which use antimony to harden bullets and strengthen armor-penetrating projectiles. Now, miners are dusting off sites that last produced antimony during the 20th century."

US Coast Guard responds amid spike in Chinese marine activity near Alaska since 2021

The hegemon China again uses so called research ships to probe other countries resolve.

If the Arctic region loses some of its ice coverage, it may become a major shipping route in the future.

"The US Coast Guard in July made a rare announcement: Off the coast of Alaska, within a maritime zone known as the extended continental shelf, the service detected a Chinese research vessel.

Then came a similar announcement in August. This time, five Chinese research ships were spotted operating in American Arctic waters. The Coast Guard, in conjunction with US Northern Command, the Pentagon’s combatant command tasked with defending the homeland, deployed units to observe the Chinese flotilla.

Come September, yet again, two Chinese-flagged research ships were spotted northwest of Alaska. And once more, the Coast Guard announced the deployment of ships and aircraft to monitor their activity."

More nonstop flights from Phoenix, Arizona to Anchorage, Alaska for sunbirds and snowbirds

When it is too hot for sunbirds in summer in the Phoenix metro area escape to Alaska? That makes sense! 😊

Vice versa Alaskans, who want to escape Winter, have it easier now to become snowbirds.

Why did Putin the Terrible meet President Trump in Alaska of all places?

Remember there is an international arrest warrant out on Putin the Terrible by the International Criminal Court since March 2023!

Perhaps, Alaska was the only mutually agreeable place where Trump could assure Putin the Terrible he would not be arrested.

P.S. About a month ago, I wrote here a similar blog post about this subject.

Trump, Putin Hail "Productive" Alaska Summit, No Ceasefire

I guess, we will learn in the coming days, weeks, and months if something important transpired during this meeting.
At least Putin the Terrible offered a follow up meeting in Moscow!

Why do Trump and Putin the Terrible meet in Alaska?

For at least three historical reasons:
  1. "Russia owned Alaska as a territory known as Russian America from 1799 to 1867. In 1867, Russia sold Alaska to the United States." (Google search result)
  2. They meet at a "military base [Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage] in Alaska that was crucial to countering the Soviet Union during the height of Cold War and still plays a role today."
  3. Then there is the International Criminal Court arrest warrant on Putin the Terrible since March 2023
Seems to be a well balanced choice for a meeting! 😊

A new theory proposes a six dimensional spacetime

Amazing stuff! Exciting! Possibly a breakthrough!

This is the latest research on this topic of three dimensional time is written by a single scientist, i.e. Gunther Kletetschka (like Albert Einstein).

The Google Scholar profile of this researcher is not exactly spectacular with only less than 4,500 lifetime citations, a total of 455 publications since 1989. However, purely theoretical papers like this one usually garner fewer citations, than other, more "applied" papers. Albert Einstein published his famous theory of special relativity at age 26 in 1905.

Note in our time so many research papers are written by sometimes hundreds of scientist/researchers as if this was the new paradigm (diversity and inclusion lead to illusions and dilution? 😊). Who are these hermits/loners that still write papers alone? Caution: satire.

Apparently, there have been previous attempts of a theory of time with three dimensions, but this latest theory here might allow for e.g. better empirically testing.

I suppose the long, dark knights and the low population density in Alaska may have helped the scientist to develop this theory. Just kidding!

"Time, not space plus time, might be the single fundamental property in which all physical phenomena occur, according to a new theory by a University of Alaska Fairbanks scientist. ..."

From the abstract:
"This paper introduces a theoretical framework based on three-dimensional time, where the three temporal dimensions emerge from fundamental symmetry requirements.
The necessity for exactly three temporal dimensions arises from observed quantum-classical-cosmological transitions that manifest at three distinct scales:
Planck-scale quantum phenomena,
interaction-scale processes, and
cosmological evolution.
These temporal scales directly generate three particle generations through eigenvalue equations of the temporal metric, naturally explaining both the number of generations and their mass hierarchy.
The framework introduces a metric structure with three temporal and three spatial dimensions, preserving causality and unitarity while extending standard quantum mechanics and field theory.
While earlier work explored three-dimensional time in Kaluza–Klein theory, this paper’s approach provides specific experimental predictions and a complete particle spectrum.
This approach provides elegant solutions to long-standing problems in particle physics: the three-generation structure emerges naturally from temporal symmetries, weak interaction parity violation arises from geometric properties, and quantum gravity achieves finite corrections without ultraviolet divergences.
The framework accurately reproduces known particle masses, including the top quark ..., muon ..., and electron ...
Building on this validation, the theory makes precise quantitative predictions, including neutrino masses ..., and gravitational wave speed modifications ...
These signatures will be testable through next-generation collider experiments, gravitational wave observatories, and cosmological surveys in the 2025–2030 timeframe. Notably, General Relativity emerges as a natural limiting case when two temporal dimensions become negligible.
The mathematical consistency and predictive power of this framework, combined with its ability to unify quantum and gravitational phenomena, suggest it deserves consideration as a fundamental theory of physics."

New theory proposes time has three dimensions, with space as a secondary effect (this popular science article even has a special editor's note)

Alaska Natives say the 46h President's last act against oil and gas makes them more eager for Trump’s return

Great headline! Some people's livelihood depends on fossil fuel and traditional fishing and hunting!

"... The Department of Interior recommended that approximately 3 million more acres in Alaska’s 23-million acre National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A) region be protected from development. The announcement also provides direction for additional protections for impacts to “subsistence use,” which are areas used by Alaska Natives for traditional fishing and hunting. ..."

How the 46th President repeatedly killed energy and mining development in the US. Some examples.

On day one, the 46th President was stupid enough to kill the Keystone pipeline! He also depleted the Strategic Petroleum Reserve!

The 46th President harmed US energy independence and mining operations in several more ways! Reckless and irresponsible!

I blogged about the 46th President's legacy here.

"... on June 27, it ignored the administration’s glaring contradictions in its climate policy. The day after the debate, the Interior Department squelched the last hopes of the proposed Ambler Road project in northwest Alaska.

Denying the construction of the Ambler Road blocks off a wealth of minerals needed for the administration’s clean-energy agenda. Mining proposals across the U.S., including Twin Metals and PolyMet in northeast Minnesota, have faltered because of the administration’s opposition to any development of natural resources. But if Biden — or a potential Harris-Walz administration — wants to do more than virtue-signal its green ambitions, it needs to promote domestic mining.

The Ambler Road would have spanned 211 miles in Alaska’s Northwest Arctic Borough and unlocked access to significant deposits of cobalt, copper, lead, silver, and zinc. Building the road and its proposed mines would create almost 5,000 direct and indirect jobs. Even the most promising potential mine would produce 149 million pounds of copper, 173 million pounds of zinc and 26 million pounds of lead — annually.

The other three potential mines have no estimates available because it is extremely difficult to explore and plan for a mine without a road to access the area. The Interior Department doesn’t seem to understand this chicken-and-the-egg problem, based on one reason it listed for denying the road: “There are no active mines in the area and no mine plan proposals pending before the federal government.” ...

Alaska’s Pebble Mine, a proposed copper mine in Bristol Bay, was vetoed by Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in January 2023 by a little-used section of the Clean Water Act (Section 404(c)).

In Alaska, 28 million acres were put off limits to oil, gas, and mining exploration in 2024, adding to the nearly half of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska that was put off limits in 2022. The administration also revoked leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) that were specifically intended for oil and gas exploration. It seems the administration would prefer it if western states were enormous nature preserves fully dependent on tourism.

But why should Minnesotans care about what happens in the remote corners of the Alaskan tundra? Minnesotans face the same indecisive flip-flopping that deters investment and hurts local economies. In January 2022, the Biden administration thoroughly derailed development of the Twin Metals mine, planned in the Duluth Complex in northeastern Minnesota, by canceling two federal mineral leases in the Superior National Forest. Twin Metals estimates its mine would create 750 direct jobs and 1,500 jobs within the local community.

The canceled leases flip-flopped the Trump administration’s 2017 decision to reinstate the leases and renew them for 10 years. Mr. Trump’s actions were themselves a reversal of an Obama administration decision to deny the lease renewal application in 2016. The future of Twin Metals is now also jeopardized by a 20-year mining moratorium on 225,000 acres in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness ..."

Caveat: I did not read the entire, long article.

Solitary humpback whales create and control sophisticated bubble nets to catch krill

Amazing stuff!

"Many animals use tools to help snag their supper, from rock-wielding sea otters to crocodiles that use sticks as bait to lure nest-building birds. But only a handful of species—including crows, chimpanzees, and orangutans—can make and modify tools the way we humans do. Now, thanks to new research, this elite club may have a new member: the humpback whale.

Scientists have known for a while that these strapping cetaceans use their blowholes to release rings of bubbles underwater, creating specialized “bubble-nets” to herd, stun, and catch krill close to the ocean’s surface. According to a new study, however, solitary humpbacks in southeast Alaska don’t just make nets—they also manipulate them in sophisticated ways.
“These whales skillfully blow bubbles in patterns that form nets with internal rings, actively controlling details like the number of rings, the size and depth of the net, and the spacing between bubbles,” ..."

From the abstract:
"Several animal species use tools for foraging; however, very few manufacture and/or modify those tools. Humpback whales, which manufacture bubble-net tools while foraging, are among these rare species. Using animal-borne tag and unoccupied aerial system technologies, we examine bubble-nets manufactured by solitary humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in Southeast Alaska while feeding on krill. We demonstrate that the nets consist of internally tangential rings and suggest that whales actively control the number of rings in a net, net size and depth and the horizontal spacing between neighbouring bubbles. We argue that whales regulate these net structural elements to increase per-lunge prey intake by, on average, sevenfold. We measured breath rate and swimming and lunge kinematics to show that the resulting increase in prey density does not increase energetic expenditure. Our results provide a novel insight into how bubble-net tools manufactured by solitary foraging humpback whales act to increase foraging efficiency."

46th President Ill-Advised Alaska Oil Ban is another of many measures to thwart the U.S. economy!

Bad news! One can only hope that President Trump in his second, non consecutive  term will immediately reverse this madness!

The senile, demented and corrupt 46th President, from the first day in office (e.g. stopped Keystone pipeline), has done a lot to prevent further development of fossil fuels in the U.S.

"... Why, then, in an election year, is his Interior Department banning oil development on 13 million acres in Alaska, including 40% of the Alaska National Petroleum Reserve? ...
[46th President] recently designated nearly 1 million acres of land in Arizona to create the Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. Just as Alaska has copper deposits, now off limits, Arizona has some of the America’s richest uranium deposits, making future uranium-mining operations impossible. ..."

Alaska sues Biden administration over Arctic lease cancellations

Good news!

"The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority is asking a federal judge to reverse a decision by the Biden administration to cancel oil and drilling leases in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge area.

The leases were approved by the Trump administration in January 2021 and canceled by the Biden administration last month.

The AIDEA said in its lawsuit the cancellation of the seven leases is unlawful for several reasons. The leases are legal and Congressionally mandated, the agency said. The lawsuit said the Department of Interior did not allow AIDEA to correct any issues to keep the leases. ..."

Alaska Gov. Dunleavy vows lawsuit over Biden cancelling oil, gas leases

Good news!

It appears the oil and gas leases cancellation was another very arbitrary  and reckless act by the senile, demented, and corrupt 46th President!

"... The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) received seven leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from the Trump administration before the inauguration of President Joe Biden, who ran on protecting wildlife. Willow oil drilling project in Alaska is approved

Good news!

What an about face for the senile and demented 46th President! What a fool!

I guess, after the fool has depleted the Strategic Oil Reserve, he somehow realized that he could not go on doing this! See also my blog post here.

"The Biden administration has approved a massive new oil drilling project in Alaska, over the objections of environmental advocates who have said greenlighting the plan would violate the president's climate goals.
It came a day after the administration said it was blocking or limiting drilling elsewhere in the state.
The government on Monday approved a scaled-down version of the so-called Willow project, which means the energy firm ConocoPhillips can move ahead with its plans to drill in the National Petroleum Reserve, located on the state's North Slope. The company says the project has the potential to produce 180,000 barrels of oil per day. ...
The project will include more than 200 wells spread across three drilling pads and miles of pipelines and roads. ...
ConocoPhillips said the project could generate as much as $17 billion in new revenue for federal, state and local governments. The company also said it would create 2,500 construction jobs and roughly 300 permanent jobs. ...
The government's announcement on Sunday blocks drilling in roughly 3 million acres of the Beaufort Sea and restricts drilling in another 13 million acres of Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve. ..."

From the company news release:
"... After nearly five years of rigorous regulatory and environmental review, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process is complete. Willow is designed to support and coexist with subsistence activities with many mitigation measures built into the project design. ..."
