Adds are coming to AI

What would life be like without adds? 😊 Will these add be smarter?

"ChatGPT Shows Ads

AI has a new revenue stream, and it looks a lot like old web banner ads.

What’s new: OpenAI began a test to display advertisements in ChatGPT. Ads appear to U.S. users of OpenAI’s free and least-expensive plans (not to subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise tiers or users of the API). The company plans to expand the experiment to other regions and test more-conversational ads on an unspecified timeline. ..."

Sweeping Trump crackdown on misleading pharmaceutical ads is first in nearly 3 decades

Food for thought! The dilemma of free speech versus truth in advertising!

It is a fair assumption that pharmaceutical companies or social media or influencers or anyone have a higher responsibility when it comes to advertising medications.

"In a landmark move, the Trump administration has launched a sweeping crackdown on misleading pharmaceutical advertisements, the first major enforcement effort since direct-to-consumer drug ads were legalized in 1997.  ...

FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary recently spoke with Full Measure about the unprecedented effort, stating that the agency is sending “thousands” of enforcement letters targeting deceptive promotions across TV, social media, and online platforms.

The U.S. is one of only two countries allowing such ads (the other is New Zealand). Makary says the commercials often downplay serious risks, present false information, or mislead viewers by showcasing happy, dancing patients. He says FDA enforcement has been notoriously lax for decades, with FDA violation letters to drug companies dropping from 130 annually in the late 1990s to zero in 2024

The new plan targets not just TV but also social media influencers and online pharmacies. ..."

Advertisers are unnerved by Meta's free-speech shift. Really!

This might just be a red herring! It is a business opportunity for companies to provide filtering services for social media to advertisers.

"The social-media giant’s loosening of speech restrictions, unveiled this month, is unsettling advertisers, who say a decade of efforts to protect their reputations is at risk. They have expressed concerns over the past few weeks that Meta’s tools might not be enough to stop ads from showing up near offensive content as the new content-moderation approach comes into effect, and that user feeds could become inundated with misinformation."

Maybe as many as 20% of advertised jobs are fake or not filled

This seems to be an awfully large number!

"—Jon Stross, president and co-founder of the hiring platform Greenhouse, which found that as much as 20% of advertised jobs are fake or not filled. Companies might post so-called ghost jobs to suggest growth, continue an ongoing search for exceptional candidates or comply with federal law. Job hunters find the bogus listings demoralizing."

Google’s plan to kill cookies by end of 2024 is making advertisers crumble in fear, but users delight

Will this also kill the many, so annoying prompts for users to accept cookies on visiting web pages? Then, I am all for it!

"Starting today [1/4/2024], the tech giant will run a limited test to restrict cookies for 1% of the people who use its Chrome browser, which is by far the world’s most popular. Cookies log internet users’ activity across websites, so advertisers can target them (🔐 read for free) with relevant ads. By year’s end, Google plans to eliminate them for all Chrome users. The company’s sweeping changes to how companies track users online—moves that have been years in the making—are among the biggest in the history of the $600 billion-a-year online-ad industry. Marketers, advertising-technology companies and web publishers said Google, which has introduced software tools designed to help replace cookies, hasn’t done enough to prepare the market."
