Cloudflare’s Web Crawler Flare-Up

Is Cloudflare an annoyance?

How many times are you daily subjected to a human tests by Cloudflare? Me, too many times! Thee tests are so annoying and so primitive!

"Web publishers using Cloudflare will soon be able to separately control an AI bot’s access based on what it does, allowing search indexing while blocking AI training or agent activity.

What’s new: Cloudflare – the content delivery network for nearly 20 percent of the internet – introduced new AI traffic controls which block training and agent bots by default while allowing search indexing crawlers. It also announced a monetization tool that would allow customers to charge specified visitors (whether humans or bots) for access to web pages, datasets, APIs, or Model Context Protocols.

How it works: Cloudflare customers can toggle crawlers’ access based on the bot’s use case, enabling or disabling access to crawlers for search, AI training, or AI agents. Crawlers serving multiple purposes will be subject to the most restrictive setting. For example, crawlers like Googlebot, Applebot, and Bingbot that both index content for search and collect training data for AI would be blocked if a publisher elects to block training crawlers. The controls will be applied beginning September 15.
  • Cloudflare defines search bots as those that index content for search engines; publishers have historically welcomed these bots because they increase the likelihood that their sites’ content will appear in search results, which drives traffic. Agent bots are those acting on a user's behalf to perform tasks on a website (for example, fetching data or making purchases), and training bots collect data to train AI models.
  • For each category, customers have three options: to block all pages, block only on pages with ads, or allow the bot. By default, pages displaying ads will block training and agent bots (or multi-purpose crawlers like those from Google, Apple, and Bing), but continue to allow search-only crawlers.
  • Cloudflare also introduced BotBase, a public database of known bots and agents that classifies them by behavior and tracks how they use website content. Cloudflare’s “Verified” label indicates that a bot operator has been authenticated, is what it declares itself to be, obeys robots.txt instructions, and does not attempt to circumvent publisher restrictions. Publishers still control whether to allow that bot category, such as search or training, but this permits more granular restrictions, like blocking search, training, or agents from a particular company, while allowing others.
  • Cloudflare's monetization system lets publishers charge AI agents for accessing online data on a per-request basis. When an AI agent requests a protected webpage or API, Cloudflare requires payment before forwarding the request to the publisher, handling payment verification at the network level. The tool has not yet been released, but customers can join the waitlist to use it.
Behind the news: AI bots account for a growing share of web traffic; Cloudflare says over half (57.5 percent) of all HTTP requests now come from automated systems rather than people.
The value of search traffic has eroded enough that some publishers have even opted out of Google Search, in part because they do not want Google’s agents to bypass their display advertising or train on their content.
Cloudflare's new framework attempts to preserve the benefits of search while giving publishers more control over other forms of AI crawling. It also rewards companies like OpenAI that separate their search and training crawlers, and punishes those, like Google, Apple, and Microsoft, that don’t.

Why it matters: Access to high-quality web data remains critical for developing and improving AI models, but publishers and partners like Cloudflare increasingly place limits on how that data can be collected. That friction has a technical and monetary cost. ..."

The 7 Phases of the Internet A map to where the Web goes next

Recommendable! One of the two authors, i.e. Vint Cerf, is also known as one of the pioneers/co-inventors of the Internet.

Caveat: I did not read the entire article.

"The Internet, born as an experiment meant to connect teams of researchers, has grown into a planetary-scale infrastructure that has reshaped society. Over the course of six decades, it has advanced through—by our count—three phases: first connecting computers, then mobile devices, and later all devices. But that’s just the start. Because just ahead comes new frontiers of connected intelligence and then, later, perception. Last, we suggest, represents a kind of global or ubiquitous connectedness, and finally connectedness even down to the quantum scale. ...

Through every phase, connectivity has been the unifying principle, although with every successive phase also comes new forms of connection. The story begins with connected packets of data across fixed networks of big machines. Then comes mobility, along with broadly connecting all manner of machines—not just mobile and fixed computing devices. Having already progressed through the first three Phases of the Internet (and having now entered the fourth), the world today has seen the steady expansion of human potential, while unlocking new industries, and reshaping how everyone connected to the Internet lives and works. ..."

Arizona, United Kingdom and other Western jurisdictions force porn websites to require age verification of visitors

How stupid is that! How many adults will be pissed off by that! Busybody legislators at their worst!

When child protection laws goes overboard!

Where does this end? Will also Google search have to ask users for age verification when they Google for porn pix?

Is it not primarily the responsibility of parents to prevent their young children from accessing such sites (and other age inappropriate sites)?

Will not businesses provide child protection as well when demanded by parents?

Why do not e.g. devices used by children advertise/signal that a child is using this device?

Was is not one of the motivations to make pornography easier available in Western countries since the 1960s or so, because it prevents some sexual assaults etc. on women? What a retrograde development!

It appears by using e.g. a VPN (choosing a location in another country) one can easily circumvent these age verification procedures implemented by porn sites, but not without hassles.

Web page accept cookies annoyance!

It is the year 2025 and we are still inundated with very frequent prompts to accept cookies on web pages we visit!

This request is so outdated and ridiculous! If here are laws requiring this nonsense, they need to be abolished/rescinded ASAP!

I don't know how many times a day I have to click on accept to go on to visit the web page. I estimate hundreds or more times per day!!!!

This annoyance totally stinks and is very outrageous!

Glimpse of next-generation internet demoed in first metro-area quantum computer network in Boston

Good news!

"... using existing Boston-area telecommunication fiber, in a demonstration of the world’s longest fiber distance between two quantum memory nodes. Think of it as a simple, closed internet carrying a signal encoded not by classical bits like the existing internet, but by perfectly secure, individual particles of light. ...
The ... team established the practical makings of the first quantum internet by entangling two quantum memory nodes separated by optical fiber link deployed over a roughly 22-mile loop ...
Each node is a very small quantum computer, made out of a sliver of diamond that has a defect in its atomic structure called a silicon-vacancy center. Inside the diamond, carved structures smaller than a hundredth the width of a human hair enhance the interaction between the silicon-vacancy center and light.
The silicon-vacancy center contains two qubits, or bits of quantum information: one in the form of an electron spin used for communication, and the other in a longer-lived nuclear spin used as a memory qubit to store entanglement, the quantum-mechanical property that allows information to be perfectly correlated across any distance. ..."

From the abstract:
"A key challenge in realizing practical quantum networks for long-distance quantum communication involves robust entanglement between quantum memory nodes connected by fibre optical infrastructure. Here we demonstrate a two-node quantum network composed of multi-qubit registers based on silicon-vacancy (SiV) centres in nanophotonic diamond cavities integrated with a telecommunication fibre network. Remote entanglement is generated by the cavity-enhanced interactions between the electron spin qubits of the SiVs and optical photons. Serial, heralded spin-photon entangling gate operations with time-bin qubits are used for robust entanglement of separated nodes. Long-lived nuclear spin qubits are used to provide second-long entanglement storage and integrated error detection. By integrating efficient bidirectional quantum frequency conversion of photonic communication qubits to telecommunication frequencies (1,350 nm), we demonstrate the entanglement of two nuclear spin memories through 40 km spools of low-loss fibre and a 35-km long fibre loop deployed in the Boston area urban environment, representing an enabling step towards practical quantum repeaters and large-scale quantum networks."

Mozilla downsizes as it refocuses on Firefox and AI: Read the memo

Did Mozilla tackle too many things?

"... Specifically, Mozilla plans to scale back its investment in a number of products, including its VPN, Relay and its Online Footprint Scrubber. Mozilla will also shut down Hubs, the 3D virtual world it launched back in 2018, and scale back its investment in its mozilla.social Mastodon instance. The layoffs will affect roughly 60 employees. Bloomberg previously reported the layoffs. ...
Going forward, the company said in an internal memo, Mozilla will focus on bringing “trustworthy AI into Firefox.” To do so, it will bring together the teams that work on Pocket, Content and AI/Ml.

Mozilla started expanding its product portfolio in recent years, all while its flagship product, Firefox, kept losing market share. ..."

Google’s plan to kill cookies by end of 2024 is making advertisers crumble in fear, but users delight

Will this also kill the many, so annoying prompts for users to accept cookies on visiting web pages? Then, I am all for it!

"Starting today [1/4/2024], the tech giant will run a limited test to restrict cookies for 1% of the people who use its Chrome browser, which is by far the world’s most popular. Cookies log internet users’ activity across websites, so advertisers can target them (🔐 read for free) with relevant ads. By year’s end, Google plans to eliminate them for all Chrome users. The company’s sweeping changes to how companies track users online—moves that have been years in the making—are among the biggest in the history of the $600 billion-a-year online-ad industry. Marketers, advertising-technology companies and web publishers said Google, which has introduced software tools designed to help replace cookies, hasn’t done enough to prepare the market."

Google Cloud mitigated largest DDoS attack, peaking above 398 million rps

Where are these attacks coming from? Who is behind it?
Perhaps state sponsored or tolerated criminals?

Unfortunately, Google seems mum about these questions!

I think, the West and other partners have to think a lot harder about rapid and effective countermeasures! Possibly targeting botnet machines?
What about the prosecution of those behind it?

"Over the last few years, Google's DDoS Response Team has observed the trend that distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks are increasing exponentially in size. Last year, we blocked the largest DDoS attack recorded at the time. This August, we stopped an even larger DDoS attack — 7½ times larger — that also used new techniques to try to disrupt websites and Internet services.

This new series of DDoS attacks reached a peak of 398 million requests per second (rps), and relied on a novel HTTP/2 “Rapid Reset” technique based on stream multiplexing that has affected multiple Internet infrastructure companies. By contrast, last year’s largest-recorded DDoS attack peaked at 46 million rps."

"Earlier today, Cloudflare, along with Google and Amazon AWS, disclosed the existence of a novel zero-day vulnerability dubbed the “HTTP/2 Rapid Reset” attack. This attack exploits a weakness in the HTTP/2 protocol to generate enormous, hyper-volumetric Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. Cloudflare has mitigated a barrage of these attacks in recent months, including an attack three times larger than any previous attack we’ve observed, which exceeded 201 million requests per second (rps). Since the end of August 2023, Cloudflare has mitigated more than 1,100 other attacks with over 10 million rps — and 184 attacks that were greater than our previous DDoS record of 71 million rps. ...
Furthermore, one crucial thing to note about the record-breaking attack is that it involved a modestly-sized botnet, consisting of roughly 20,000 machines. ..."

Putin’s quest to disconnect Russia from the global internet like Iran, North Korea, and China

Recommendable! I wish Putin the Terrible good luck with that! Maybe the otherwise lethargic Russian people will finally oust this megalomaniac and war criminal!

Here is my recent, related blog post on Iran.

"... Russia has been attempting to create a sovereign internet—or ‘RuNet’—for years. ...
Moscow also stepped up its international advocacy for the concept of cyber and internet ‘sovereignty’, pushing for more state control over the governance of the internet in forums such as the United Nations. These efforts—supported by China and other authoritarian countries like Iran and North Korea—have so far had limited success, prompting Putin to explore how Russia could independently break away from the global internet architecture.

The passage of Russia’s controversial Sovereign Internet Law in 2019 provided the government with the legislative authority to create a ‘sustainable, secure and autonomous’ online environment and establish the technical means to create a ‘sovereign Russian internet’. ..."

Cybersecurity Threats From Online Gaming

The world has fast become a global village thanks to the Internet, satellites, undersea cables and so on.

Anytime connectivity of all things and all people across the globe is becoming reality and that is great great! The possibilities and opportunities are endless only limited by our ability to imagine! However!

Idiom: The two sides of a coin. Or the two faced Roman Janus who presides over peace and war!

I strongly believe this intense battle or arms race between good and evil can be won to the great benefit of humanity! Human ingenuity will do it as time goes on! Criminals, bad actors, or government agencies will mostly  loose! It is only a matter of time!

Potentially, in a a few years or in 1-2 decades we could possibly make global elections possible. Global direct democracy is on the horizon! We should thank the gamers! 😊

"From the emergence of the video game “Pong” in 1972 to the release of “Hogwart’s Legacy” in 2023, the video gaming industry has come a long way. With a revenue of over US$227 billion in 2022, gaming is no longer the niche industry it was once thought to be. The number of gamers in the world is expected to reach a figure of 3.32 billion by 2024. This recent surge in growth has, in a large part, been a result a of the COVID-19 pandemic when the market expanded by about 26 percent between 2019 and 2021.
However, this popular form of recreation has also imperilled cybersecurity. There has been a surge in cyberattacks on the gaming sector, with an increase of 167 percent in web application attacks in 2021 alone. In 2022, the gaming industry became the biggest target of Distributed Denial of Service attacks, accounting for about 37 percent of all such attacks. Account takeovers, cheating mods, credit card theft, and fraud are all issues faced by gamers on a regular basis. The most alarming development, however, was the leaking of secret documents in April 2023 containing confidential US Intelligence on a videogame chat server, in what has come to be described as the worst Pentagon leak in years. This just goes to show how ignorance of this threat could have unforeseen and potentially catastrophic consequences, even from a national security perspective. ..."

Your web browsing habits may be less private than you think

I have little doubt that this is already widely applied! Is it being exploited or abused? Who is behind?

"... The concept is simple. Just as the ridges on a fingerprint are unique to an individual, so are the nuggets of information stored in your web browser. To make the web easier to navigate, your browser knows what device you’re using, its settings, and hundreds of other details. Analyzed together, these scraps of data can reveal your identity to third parties, allowing them to build a profile and track your movements from site to site. ..."

Your web browsing habits may be less private than you think | IBM Research Blog IBM researchers have uncovered a new form of fingerprinting that can bypass the privacy protections of major web browsers like Safari and Firefox to infer a user’s identity.
