What ever happened to the so often repeated assertions of Peak Oil?

"... The HSV-2X appraisal well encountered 429 feet of oil across two reservoirs and tested at 6,000 barrels per day of 37° API oil. Murphy has revised its recoverable reserves estimate toward the upper end of the 170-430 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe) range previously announced, with additional shallow reservoir sections providing further upside potential. 

"In a predominantly gas-prone region, oil discoveries of this scale are exceptional," said Angus Rodger, head of Asia-Pacific upstream analysis for Wood Mackenzie. "HSV ranks as the third-largest oil discovery in Southeast Asia since 2000, trailing only Indonesia's Banyu Urip and Malaysia's Gumusut. ..."

Good news, but late! Bravo! Intermittent, unreliable wind power is a total scam! These windmills are an eyesore and spoil nature and what a waste!

Apparently, recycling used, old wind turbines is also an unresolved issue!

Millions of insects and birds are killed by these wind turbines per year. What is their influence on local climate and weather etc.? Plus, the mining that necessary to manufacture them and so on. Nothing really green about it!

According to other news, one of the projects is a wind farm near Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts! Who in their right mind would build a wind farm there!

The Interior Department said it has paused the federal leases for five East Coast projects in the works, citing national security risks the Defense Department identified. The projects were expected to deliver nearly 6 gigawatts of potential electricity at full capacity, according to an offshore wind industry group. That would be roughly enough to power Manhattan."

IEA forecasting oil demand for transportation to peak in 2025. Oil demand seen peaking in 2028 as EVs make gains. Really!

This headline is so laughable that it hurts! So ridiculous! By repeating this peak oil demand myth etc. it does not become more realistic!

Just take Africa where only about 100 million individuals/households own a car! What about India?

According to the IEA:

ConocoPhillips makes Norway oil discovery of up to 200 million barrels

So much for the peak oil hoax! The Norwegian Sea oil fields have been heavily explored and drilled since 1851. It is thus a great surprise that new oil reservoirs were discovered in those fields!

"... It was the second petroleum discovery made by ConocoPhillips in the Norwegian Sea in two months. In November, the U.S. firm found natural gas southwest of the Skarv field."

Motivation & Relevance

Who and when originated those recurrent notions of “The Limits To Growth” (1972), “Peak Oil”, “Overpopulation” (1798) and the like? Something that piqued my curiosity. In my opinion, these are all fallacies or results of lazy analysis and some form of determinism.

Not surprisingly, if they are fallacious notions, then they consequently lead to wrong if not sometimes dangerous prescriptions.

The Coal Question

The book by this title is one of the best known publications by economist William Stanley Jevons (1835 – 1882).

In this book Jevons recognized the importance of energy in economic production. He raised the issue that since coal was a limited resource that sooner or later prosperity and progress would succumb to declining extraction of coal. He also contended that population growth could not continue in the face of increasing coal depletion.

Fallacies

In these cases, conclusions and forecasts are based on determinism and simplistic forecasts. Human ingenuity, the now famous unknowns and necessity is the mother of invention are omitted or overlooked.

Human Ingenuity – A little Understood Concept

Wikipedia, e.g. has a very unsatisfactory entry under human ingenuity as of 6/9/2013, which I find surprising. Even the world’s largest encyclopedia is no resource on this subject. Encyclopedia Britannica does not seem to have any entry on this subject.

Like inventions or innovations, humans are still rather clueless about scientific or technological progress.

The Bonanza Of Green River Crude Oil

Peak (Snake) oil anybody! Bury peak oil nonsense as fast as you can!

On May 10 2012, in testimony before the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, the Director of Natural Resources and Environment at the U.S. Government Accountability Office, said that the “[o]il shale deposits in the Green River Formation [in the western Rocky Mountains] are estimated to contain up to 3 trillion barrels of oil, half of which may be recoverable, which is about equal to the entire world’s proven oil reserves.” Unfortunately, most of this massive oil shale deposit lies beneath federal land, where the Obama administration and its radical environmentalist supporters can keep it locked away.
