The US is abundant in affordable food supplies of all kinds! There might be some rural or remote areas, where food supply is not as good as in most urban areas, but people chose to live there.

Another one of those articles claiming a failing or inferior health care system in the US versus other rich countries! This kind of demagoguery has been repeated many times over several decades!

Making those repeated, but dubious claims is good business for doctors and public health officials etc.!

Induced abortions via mifepristone and misoprostol (medical abortion) represented 63% of abortions in the United States in 2023. Consequently, ED visits may be mistakenly attributed to a prior spontaneous abortion or miscarriage rather than induced abortion.

Objectives: 

We sought to determine the period prevalence trajectory of these miscodes from 2004-2015 to 2016-2021. In addition, for the period 2016-2021, we sought to determine if there were differences in the severity or acuity of these miscoded visits compared to correctly classified post-abortion visits.

Methods:

We analyzed Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Transformed Medicaid Statistical Information System Analytic Files (TAF) to identify 28,534 emergency department visits for all causes, and their level of acuity, following either a medical or surgical abortion within 30 days. For abortion-related visits, we determined whether the visits were miscoded as a spontaneous abortion or were correctly coded.

Results:

Between the two time periods, miscode period prevalence rates following medical abortion increased from 4.7% of total visits to 18.0%; and from 45.5% of abortion-related visits to 83.5%. Following surgical abortion, miscodes increased from 1.2% of all-cause visits to 7.7%; abortion-related miscodes increased from 26.8% to 73.9%. During the period 2016-2021, ED visits following medical abortion were more likely to be miscoded than visits following surgical abortion: for all-cause visits, OR 2.63, P<.001; for abortion-related visits, OR 1.79, P<.001. Miscoded ED visits had significantly higher acuity than correctly coded visits. For all-cause visits following medical abortion, OR 3.68, P<.001; for all-cause visits following surgical abortion, OR 3.39, P<.001. For abortion-related visits following medical abortion, OR 1.51, P=.006; for abortion-related visits following surgical abortion, OR 1.41, P=.03.

Discussion:

Coincident with the increasing dominance of medical abortion, there is a concurrent increase in the misattribution of post-induced abortion ED visits to a spontaneous abortion. High levels of visit acuity suggest that these miscodes represent a serious risk factor. Further, these miscodes mask and statistically deflate post-abortion complication rates and undermine both the science and medical management necessary to address these issues, representing a threat to effective surveillance."

There are strong incentives to inflate the numbers: More money for research, care etc. There is also this strong notion/prejudice that the US must be a nation of drug addicts.

The inflation of death from Covid-19 goes on! It is appalling! 

E.g. what if these individuals had caught a severe cold or influenza or had a minor physical accident before their death? Their deaths would have been a footnote in a medical statistics compendium or barely mentioned!

Unfortunately, I was not able to quickly find the study underlying the article below.

The death count is ambiguous if not inflated. Everybody was counted dying with the coronavirus independent of the cause of death. Of course, there is also the undercount, but undercount does not justify an overcount.

Now, we learn that possibly the hospital admission count is similarly misleading: Many cases are counted although they were treated primarily for something else and/or the patient was admitted for something else.

Of the 13,023 patients reported as having the virus on January 25, 6,767 (52%) were not being treated principally for Covid-19.

The latest scare news regarding Covid-19 that was widely disseminated!

As usual, the death count is very likely significantly inflated. Anybody who dies with Covid-19 infection or positive test is listed regardless of actual cause of death. How many would have died if had a severe flu season instead of Covid-19?

Relative to the total U.S. population of about 323 million, 500,000 deaths represents only 0.15% of the population. If you do a similar calculation for Covid-19 deaths count for the entire world (2,499,445 source), then it comes out at 0.03% (World population: 7.8 billion). Does this not suggest that the U.S. death count is quite inflated? Or does it mean the death count for other countries is seriously underreported? Probably, the correct answer is a mix of both.

Why is not made more public that mostly older folks (65 and older) are affected by Covid-19. To be more precise around 80% of deaths.

Why do we not focus more on the elderly? Why do all ages have to wear masks in public spaces or have to suffer through general lockdown etc. etc. There has been a strong suspicion for a long time that almost any death among elderly and others is quasi automatically attributed to Covid-19, because it is so convenient and it triggers more government and other money! I bet, when the dust finally settles on this Covid-19 pandemic, we will learn that the numbers were largely exaggerated! But we are told daily to believe (inexact) science!
Healthy scepticism is a better guide!
