Seems to be clearly a frivolous lawsuit by Arizona and probably by the other seven states too! Or are these high profile cases meant to promote the professional careers of these Attorney Generals?
Lawsuits for fame and glory to embellish the resume?
How sycophantic is this Attorney General by filing this suit?
Has the public not asked for ChatGPT to provide more human like responses?
Has it not been a common feature for years across large language models (LLM) to be sycophantic? How sycophantic are humans in general? Let's not forget that LLMs are essentially trained on human behavior!
Is it not the primary responsibility of parents to prevent harm etc. to their children?
"Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes sued OpenAI on Wednesday, saying ChatGPT violates the state’s consumer fraud law and endangers children.
The lawsuit says OpenAI “put profits over safety” [???] in rushing ChatGPT to market and hid features built to mimic human compassion to draw in young users. It adds that the chatbot has at times produced responses users read as encouraging self-harm or violence.
Arizona is one of eight states that filed separate suits Wednesday, along with Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia. Arizona’s complaint says ChatGPT encourages teens to share personal information and at times discourages them from telling parents.
OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri said the company has built “industry-leading age-specific protections,” including parental controls and break reminders. OpenAI says ChatGPT is meant for users 13 and older, and those under 18 need a parent’s permission."
From the official announcement:
"Attorney General Kris Mayes today [10/14/2026] announced that she is suing OpenAI for hurting Arizona children, deceiving parents, and violating Arizona laws. The complaint alleges widespread violations of the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act stemming from the company’s deceptive design and marketing practices, including the concealment of features that render its ChatGPT AI chatbot extraordinarily agreeable, uniquely sycophantic, and purposefully designed to feign human compassion in order to draw Arizona users—including minors—deeper into the platform and maximize time spent on ChatGPT. ..."
