Latin American/Ukrainian Infantry Unit Defeats Russians in Battlefield Assault

Given how many countries are involved in the Russo-Ukrainian War it is fair to say it is a World War III. Here is another example.

This is a reminder of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) that preceded World War II. Volunteers from many countries were fighting on the side of the the side of the Republican Government against General Francisco Franco.

"A Ukrainian combat infantry unit mostly recruited from Colombian and Brazilian volunteers overran Russian positions in the northeastern Kharkiv region in recent fighting, Thursday statements from the unit and its chain of command said. ...

Most of the 23rd Regiment’s soldiers and junior officers are volunteers recruited from Latin America. Colombians, followed by Brazilians predominate in the reportedly 500-personnel unit, but Mexicans, Argentines, Chileans and Paraguayans are also in the ranks, along with an Old-World contingent from Spain, Portugal and Italy. Each fighter is paid the standard AFU salary for a combat infantry soldier. ..."

Aid Worker killed in Ukraine: Heroic Jewish volunteer Emma Igual killed by Russian shell

Foreign non combatant volunteers providing humanitarian aid die in the Russo-Ukrainian war as well. Here is the story of one of them.

War brings out the worst and sometimes the best in humans.

In Ukraine, Emma co-founded her rescue charity Road to Relief. She and her cofounder Henri expanded its activities beyond the rescue of civilians and soldiers and delivering vital humanitarian aid. She began bringing out specialist doctors and creating a frontline mobile surgery, vital where the bumpy ride to a hospital could have been fatal. ..."

On the expanding role of citizen science

Very recommendable! A long overview article on this subject. Volunteering amateur scientists make lots of valuable contributions to science! It's a win-win!

"... Since 2013, Pauly has been engaged in a community-science project using the natural-history app iNaturalist. His network of 9,000-plus contributors has accumulated more than 60,000 reptile sightings, allowing him to identify and eradicate an invasive species, observe rare alligator-lizard (Elgaria multicarinata) matings and publish more than a dozen papers. ...
the approach is more popular than ever and even has journals dedicated to it. The number of annual publications mentioning ‘citizen science’ went from 151 in 2015 to more than 640 in 2021, according to the Web of Science database. Researchers from physiologists to palaeontologists to astronomers are finding that harnessing the efforts of ordinary people is often the best route to the answers they seek. ..."

Community science draws on the power of the crowd Participatory-science projects bring amateurs and experts together to collect and crunch data, and even design research.
