Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez propose a ban on data center construction

Old and young modern Luddites and socialists united! 😊 Together we are stronger! Caution: satire!

The beauty and the old man or the odd couple! Don't these socialists have any better ideas! 😊

"Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York are introducing companion legislation in their respective chambers today that would halt the projects until Congress enacts comprehensive AI regulation. ..."

More than 230 Environmental organizations call for the US Congress to halt new data center construction in a public letter. Really!

The Luddites again spread alarmism and hysteria! It is donation solicitation season! Who is behind it? China, North Korea, Russia, Iran?

Keep in mind: Global Warming is a hoax and Climate Change is a religion!

One day in the not so distant future (perhaps as early as 2030), I am sure machine learning & AI will help humanity to find better solutions for our energy supply and energy conservation. But until then, we need energy hungry data centers!

"As energy demand for data centers soars, environmental groups are calling for a moratorium on the approval and construction of new facilities.

More than 230 organizations, including Food & Water Watch, Friends of the Earth, and Greenpeace signed a public letter urging members of Congress to support a national moratorium on the approval and construction of new data centers, citing rising electricity and water consumption. ..."

"Dear Members of Congress:
We, the undersigned organizations collectively representing millions of people in all 50 states [???], call on you to support a national moratorium on the approval and construction of new data centers. ...

The rapid, largely unregulated rise of data centers to fuel the AI and crypto frenzy is disrupting communities across the country and threatening Americans’ economic, environmental, climate and water security. ..."

Governor Kotek signs executive order banning cell phones in Oregon K-12 classrooms and school day. Really!

How stupid is that! Luddites in the 21st century!

When humans resort to prohibition than this often a sign of cluelessness!

Another US state follows this folly!

According to Google search: "As of June 2025,  ... [22] States with outright bans or restrictions: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and West Virginia"

Smart devices need to be integrated into K-12 education!

"Governor Tina Kotek issued an executive order on Wednesday mandating all 197 school districts in Oregon ban student cell phone use during the school day.

“Oregon’s schools should be a place where students find belonging, support, and the joy of learning something new.” Governor Kotek said. ..."

Governor Tina Kotek. Is she a Luddite? Maybe we should ban that Microsoft laptop next to her!

Organic Farming Activism Threatens Millions—and the Environment

Recommendable! The road to hell is paved with good, but lousy intentions!

Always be aware of the Luddites even a the end of he first quarter of the 21st century! They are still among us!

"... When Sri Lanka started using artificial fertilizers in the 1960s, rice yields tripled, and the country became self-sufficient in rice production. It could even export rice.

In 2021, Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa told a United Nations summit that he was concerned about the country’s “increasing use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and weedicides that led to adverse health and environmental impacts.”

Ignoring proven scientific practices, Rajapaksa banned all imports of chemical fertilizers, forcing Sri Lanka’s millions of farmers to go organic virtually overnight. Without access to agrochemicals, average rice yields in Sri Lanka were reduced by 30 percent. Sri Lanka was forced to spend $450 million on rice imports. Tea production, the country’s prime export, also fell by 18 percent.

The result was economic collapse, with poverty rates nearly doubling between 2021 and 2022. Sri Lanka has become the first country in the Asia Pacific region in 20 years to default on foreign debt.  ..."

The European Union Is Finally Coming Around to Gene-Edited Seeds after 25 years of Luddite resistance

Good news! The EU has taken the so called precautionary principle to absurd levels! It has exploited the primitive fears of people!

There are still about a 1 billion people living on earth without sufficient food!

"In 2021, the European Union announced that it would be reviewing its 2001-era legislation governing genetically modified (GM) organisms ...
Two years following the EU’s 2021 announcement, the European Commission (the EU’s executive branch) is now proposing to loosen its restrictive GM rules in cases where gene-edited crops have been subject to no more than 20 specific gene modifications. A leaked draft of the proposed legislation suggests that under the new rules, EU countries would no longer be able to ban the cultivation of NGT crops. The decision is based on an extensive study that found, as an EU Vice-President put it, “there is sufficient evidence and scientific basis to initiate a targeted policy action on plants derived from certain new genomic techniques”—i.e., NGTs. ..."

The European Union Is Finally Coming Around to Gene-Edited Seeds For a quarter century, activists such as Vandana Shiva have opposed GM crops that can help feed the world. Now, more than ever, it’s time to reject their Luddite demands

Writers Guild of America on strike for the past three weeks against e.g. AI

Does this not strongly remind of Luddites? Certainly so!

European Union: Clearview AI hit with another €20M ban

I think this is another extreme overreaction by the Big Government of EU on face recognition technology! It is reminiscent of Luddites!

Should not the consumer and citizen have the last word?

"... Clearview AI has been hit with another sanction for breaching European privacy rules.

The Athens-based Hellenic data protection authority has fined the controversial facial recognition firm €20 million and banned it from collecting and processing the personal data of people living in Greece. It has also ordered it to delete any data on Greek citizens that it has already collected.

Since late last year, national DPAs in the U.K., Italy and France have also issued similar decisions sanctioning Clearview — effectively freezing its ability to sell its services in their markets since any local customers would be putting themselves at risk of being fined. ..."

Germany Falls Behind Again: Self Driving Cars

Posted: 10/17/2019

Everybody around the globe knows that the automobile industry of Germany is one of the major innovative sectors of the German economy. However, thanks to the widespread domination of highly irrational climate religion and climate hysteria in Germany cars have been declared to be public enemy number one!

Now, Yandex of Russia announced that its self driving cars had reached the 1 million miles milestone driving without a human driver.

Where is Yandex operating its self driving cars? In Russia, Las Vegas, and Israel. Why not Germany?

Who is Yandex cooperating with on self driving cars? Hyundai!

Germans have missed out on quite a few leading technological trends over the past several decades like software development, computers, smartphones etc.

Europeans Ban Cloning Of Farm Animals Nonsense

Posted: 9/12/2015

Trigger

We read “The European Parliament today [9/8/2015] voted to ban the cloning of all farm animals as well as the sale of cloned livestock, their offspring, and products derived from them. The measure, which passed by a large margin, goes beyond a directive proposed by the European Commission in 2013, which would have implemented a provisional ban on the cloning of just five species: cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, and horses.” (emphasis added).

European Luddites

The ban by the European Parliament “does not cover cloning for research purposes, nor does it prevent efforts to clone endangered species.” I presume, it does not cover pets either.

Do these European fools still believe Europe is the center of the world? Another bout of navel gazing by Europeans.  Do they believe the rest of the world will stand still now?

“Companies in the United States and in China are cloning livestock for breeding and for research purposes, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found no significant differences between healthy clones and healthy animals from conventional breeding. It considers meat and other products form clones to be as safe as that from other farm animals.”

Dismal Economists Or How Technology Is Destroying Jobs

Technological Change Becomes A Scapegoat

I have recently written a blog post about modern luddites arguing about the dangers of robots and how they will displace labor. Every age has their luddites.

Technological Change Destroys Jobs Faster Than It Creates New Ones

This about sums up a new “feature story” in the MIT Technology Review titled “How Technology Is Destroying Jobs” written by its editor David Rotman dated 6/12/2013. The MIT Technology Review was the last publication I would have expected such an article to come from.

In the opening paragraph we read (Emphasis added):
“… it is easy to miss just how provocative Erik Brynjolfsson’s contention really is. Brynjolfsson, a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, and his collaborator and coauthor Andrew McAfee have been arguing for the last year and a half that impressive advances in computer technology—from improved industrial robotics to automated translation services—are largely behind the sluggish employment growth of the last 10 to 15 years. Even more ominous for workers, the MIT academics foresee dismal prospects for many types of jobs as these powerful new technologies are increasingly adopted not only in manufacturing, clerical, and retail work but in professions such as law, financial services, education, and medicine. … But Brynjolfsson and McAfee’s claim is more troubling and controversial. They believe that rapid technological change has been destroying jobs faster than it is creating them, contributing to the stagnation of median income and the growth of inequality in the United States.”

These two authors, Mr. B. and Mr. McAfee, have also published a book about this subject in 2011 titled “Race Against the Machine”. In their online excerpt the authors state “We can’t win that race, especially as computers continue to become more powerful and capable.” Oh, really!

Just Academic Baloney

To blame the “rapid technological advances” for the sluggish employment growth over the last 10 years or so is a seriously flawed economic analysis. If anything is the cause the economic malaise of the past 10 years are failed economic policies, excessive government spending over the past 2-3 decades, excessive government debt, high burden of taxation and regulation, and reckless central bank manipulation of interest rates and other monetary policy failures.

Economics is not a dismal science, but some economists are dismal and some are Luddites and dismal combined in one person.

Like the steam engine or the spinning jenny or industrial robots before, this technological revolution will not lead to employment disaster. Who builds robots? Who repairs robots? Who writes software, who designs networks, data centers, etc.? I am still waiting for a robot to cut my hair (I wish they would be available).

Hysteric German Opposition To Google Street View

Long Overdue

This is a blog post I had intended to write some time ago, but did not find time to write it or this subject had drifted away.

Google Stopped Taking Pictures In Germany

“In April 2011, Google decided to stop taking Street View images in Germany” (Wikipedia). Germans can be very parochial and myopic.

What Germans don’t see are the enormous benefits of this project. Just the thought of being able to wander through the most famous streets, places etc. of the world at any time from my computer at home or even from my smartphone is mind boggling.

I believe, most of the concerns raised against Google Street View can be easily ameliorated by current and available software technology, e.g. automatically graying out faces, license plates etc. Are Luddites only a past phenomenon?

Personal Experience

Not long ago I wanted to identify the multi-dwelling house in which my maternal Grandmother lived in the city of Frankfurt am Main. I had some faint memory of what it looked like and where it was located.

Since I live in the USA I would have to travel to Germany to physically walk through the street to refresh my memory. Thus I thought, I use Google Streetview from the comfort of my home in the US and view the pictures of this short and narrow street not far from downtown. However, as I was viewing the images of the multi-story buildings lining this rather typical residential neighborhood, I noticed that a large number of dwellings were not visible due to redaction. Thus, my effort was practically thwarted by the residents of this street. Thank you very much!

Watch Out For The Robotides Or Modern Luddites Against Robots

Parade Of Horribles

I have been reading articles lately that suggest that the impending revolution of smart, save robots will displace human labor at an unprecedented large scale in business and at home.

Cassandra Vs. Luddites

Like so many Luddites of the past they will be proven wrong. Cassandras are few, Luddites are many. Cassandra was later murdered; Luddites go on to spread their views.

A New Symbiosis And A Revolution Of Relationships

Personal robots will make our lives so much better in so many ways. The thought of it is incredible. I wish, I was born in the future. Robots that will do all your daily chores, be your personal trainer, chef, masseuse, and so on.

We need large numbers of robots. How about a robot for everyone? Who will program them? Who will maintain them? Robots? Ultimately, it will be humans building new and better robots etc.

This will be the next major stage of human evolution. Going far beyond the limits of nature …
