Schön, dass die Neue Züricher Zeitung an diese besondere Beziehung erinnert! Leider ist der Artikel hinter einer paywall!
Ich muss leider zugeben, dass ich wohl Rheinland-Pfälzer Sauermagen nie in meinem Leben probiert habe, obwohl mein Heimatland Hessen ja benachbart ist. Bin aber ein grosser Fan von Thüringer Sauerbraten mit Rotkohl und saurer Nieren. 😊
Die friedliche und gelungene Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands gehört mit Sicherheit zu einer der großen Leistungen Helmut Kohls! Mit der Förderung von Angela Merkel hat er einen großen Fehler gemacht.

Mikhail Gorbachev R.I.P.: One of the great leaders of the late 20th century
Unfortunately, Russia is still run by a former KGB officer, the current dictator Putin the Terrible!
In the wake of the ongoing war of aggression against the Ukraine, will the Russian people remember "his policy of glasnost ("openness") allowed for enhanced freedom of speech and press, while his perestroika ("restructuring") sought to decentralize economic decision-making to improve its efficiency. His democratization measures and formation of the elected Congress of People's Deputies undermined the one-party state." (Source)
His courage to allow the former Soviet Union to dissolve without major violence or war will never be forgotten! Perhaps, him "born in [a small village] Privolnoye, Stavropol Krai, to a poor peasant family of Russian and Ukrainian heritage. Growing up under the rule of Joseph Stalin, in his youth, he operated combine harvesters on a collective farm before joining the Communist Party ..." (Source) gave him the strength and wisdom to go ahead with the reforms and the tremendous transformation.
Without him the concerted efforts of President Reagan, Prime Minister Thatcher, and the Pope John Paul II would have been in vain!
These are truly rare moments in history when such a meeting of great minds happens!
Google was not able to find a picture of Gorbachev, Reagan, and Thatcher together. Does it not exist?

The Divine Plan
There appears to be at least one very serious issue with this book: The omission of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher! Without her, I don't think President Reagan and Pope John Paul II would have been as successful in such a short time! Then, there was the last General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev.
Rarely in history do great minds meet, but with Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, Karol Józef Wojtyła (better known as Pope John Paul II), and Mikhail Gorbachev such a great moment happened!
Excerpt from the book of the months review by Intercollegiate Studies Institute:
"Just six weeks apart in the spring of 1981, Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan took bullets from would-be assassins.
Few realized at the time how close both men came to dying.
Surviving these near-death experiences created a singular bond between the pope and the president that historians have failed to appreciate.
When John Paul II and Reagan met only a year later, they confided to each other a shared conviction: that God had spared their lives for a reason.
That reason? To defeat Communism.
In private, Reagan had a name for this: “The DP”—the Divine Plan. ...
