How Do Transformers Learn to Represent Symmetries?

This could be an interesting new research paper by Stefanie Jegelka and her team!

From the abstract:
"Training Transformer-based architectures with finite data augmentation has become an increasingly popular approach in geometric machine learning.
Despite its empirical success, the interplay between the Transformer architecture, invariance to different symmetries, and augmentation budgets remains underexplored.
In this paper, we study the ability of a vanilla Transformer to learn various symmetries through finite data augmentation for point cloud datasets.
We identify an ordering of increasing learnability across the following symmetry groups:
(i) non-angle-preserving symmetries,
(ii) angle-preserving symmetries, and
(iii) base angle-preserving subgroups, such as translation, rotation, and scale.
For the base angle-preserving groups, we further investigate the Transformer's extrapolation behavior and conduct a structural analysis of the trained models, allowing us to identify interpretable mechanisms that induce invariance.
Finally, we extend our analysis to equivariant functions and show that the detected mechanisms for approximate invariance can also provide a key building block for learned equivariance. ..."

France & Germany agree on more socialist central planning regarding CO2 emissions of cars

What a terrible nonsense! When two fools get together (i.e. Macron & Merz)!

Global warming is a hoax and climate change is a religion!

The Iron Curtain fell and socialism spread all over Europe!

"Under the Franco-German plan, the 2035 target would be set at 90% [reduction], but without the need for additional compensatory measures. The approach is broadly in line with the wishes of German automakers. ..."

Two first Nuclear Clocks Kick Off a Precision Race with atomic clocks

Amazing stuff! Which of the two new nuclear clocks is more precise?

From the abstract (1):
"The laser-accessible nuclear transition in the thorium-229 isotope has been identified as a candidate for realizing an optical nuclear clock that might outperform current optical clocks based on electron-shell transitions in atoms or ions.
It is expected to be more robust against external perturbations and to provide enhanced sensitivity in clock-based tests of the fundamental principles of physics. Here we realize a thorium-229 nuclear clock by stabilizing a continuous-wave laser to the 148-nm nuclear transition with rapid feedback based on absorption spectroscopy.
The thorium-229 nuclei are embedded in a millimetre-sized, room-temperature calcium fluoride crystal.
A subharmonic of the 148-nm radiation is continuously compared with a Yb+ single-ion clock. The nuclear clock shows a shot-noise-limited fractional frequency instability of  where τ is the averaging time, approaching 10−15 instabilities over 1 day of operation.
Improvements to the instability by several orders of magnitude are projected for future devices.
We use the nuclear clock to constrain models of ultralight dark matter by searching for periodic fluctuations and slow drifts in the nuclear transition energy, on timescales between 20 s and 1 day.
Benefitting from the enhanced sensitivity of the thorium-229 transition, these constraints compete with the best atomic clocks concerning dark matter coupling to photons and go beyond previous measurements regarding coupling to the strong force."

From the abstract (2):
"Atomic clocks have made time and frequency the most precisely measured quantities in physics, progressing from microwave standards that realize the SI second to optical clocks with unprecedented precision.
A nuclear clock transfers the frequency reference from an electronic to a nuclear transition and the uniquely low-lying, laser-accessible, isomeric transition in 229Th currently offers the most practical route to compact, robust timekeeping and sensitive tests of fundamental physics.
Realizing such a clock requires turning spectroscopy of the 229Th nuclear resonance into a stable discriminator for steering a traceable oscillator.
Here we demonstrate a 229Th nuclear clock by stabilizing a continuous-wave, narrow-linewidth 148.4 nm vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) laser to a resolved, weakly temperature-sensitive nuclear transition in 229Th:CaF2 crystals. A 10-μW VUV source generated by four-wave mixing in cadmium vapour and phototube-based frequency modulation absorption readout provide a fast, high-signal-to-noise nuclear discriminator. The clock reaches a fractional frequency instability of
 for averaging time τ.
Clock-transition frequencies measured in two independently fabricated crystals agree at the 10−13 level and are consistent with previous VUV-comb measurements on other 229Th:CaF2 crystals.
These results establish laser-addressed nuclei as operational clock references and provide a reproducible solid-state platform for compact nuclear clocks, nuclear quantum sensors and precision tests of fundamental physics."

Nazi Germany had no hope of making an atomic bomb, uranium cubes reveal

How many articles have been written about this subject? Many! According to Google Search "the subject comprises thousands of academic papers, books, and historical studies published over the last eight decades."

How close did Hitler ever come to developing an atomic bomb? What was actually known as fact at the time? Will these speculations ever end?

Did not some German scientists actually delay or sabotage the effort/project? I don't remember the details anymore.

What was the effect e.g. the exodus of Jewish scientists?

Vier Brücken in Rekordzeit: Warum Herne nur 18 statt 54 Monate brauchte

Sehr beeindruckend!

Alternative for Germany party wins big in regional election but falls slightly short of majority

Good news! This outcome was expected for several months.

It is absolutely disgusting that almost all news media outlets call the AfD a far-right party (as if the Nazis were resurrected).

The AfD is right of center, but not extreme. However, how do you define center for German politics? Has the center not clearly moved to the left since reunification in 1990? The Wall fell and socialism spread everywhere in Germany.

Perhaps one of the biggest issues with the AfD is their relation to Putin the Terrible! Does the AfD properly distinguish between Russia and the megalomaniac, warmonger and war criminal Putin the Terrible!

Let's find out which party is willing to form a coalition government? Maybe the CDU would be the best choice. However, Chancellor Merz is a fool!

Had I been a citizen of Sachsen-Anhalt, I would have voted for the AfD too. Let's give them a chance to prove that they can make a positive difference in the banana republic of Germany! If the AfD fails, then don't vote for them anymore!

German owned grocery store chain Aldi home delivery charges for bags in Arizona

This reminds me very much of good old Germany where such stupid rules (a fee for shopping bags) have been implemented at least since 2016 if not earlier!

"Q: How much does ALDI grocery delivery service cost?

A:  Delivery fees are determined by a variety of factors, such as delivery window and location.
ALDI shopping bags will be used to bag customer delivery orders. Similar to an in-store transaction, customers will be charged a small fee for bags used. A service fee may also be included to cover operating costs for the service."

P.S. Plus the Aldi website product search function really sucks. Lot's of wrong articles to straight forward searches!

German defense exports to Israel soar in the first half of 2026

Good news!

"Germany approved defense exports to Israel worth nearly €800 million (about $930 million) in the first half of 2026, "Der Spiegel" reports, citing data from Germany’s Ministry of Economics and Energy in response to a query from a leftist opposition party.

This is such a significant jump that in the first half of 2026, total German defense exports to Israel were four times higher than in all of 2025 (€260 million). Some of the increase was due to Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s partial [???] lifting of the Israel arms embargo, which ended last November.
Furthermore, €735.8 million of the amount (about 91.9%) was approved in the second quarter, with 67% of that for a "naval project" and 21% for licenses for joint projects carried out by German and Israeli companies together, serving the German military. ..."

Cell therapy substantially reduces severe rheumatoid arthritis in first clinical trial

Good news, but a very small sample size! Impressive!

"Immunotherapies such as CAR T-cell therapy are used primarily to treat cancer. In the future, these patient-specific therapies, manufactured from patients’ own immune cells, could also help cure autoimmune diseases.
Six patients with particularly severe rheumatoid arthritis have now received this treatment at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. In the journal Nature Medicine*, the researchers report the results from the world’s first clinical trial of its kind: Disease activity decreased substantially in all participants. By the end of the observation period, three of the patients no longer required any medication for rheumatoid arthritis. ...

Currently available treatments can usually keep the inflammation under control, but do not cure the disease. Patients therefore require lifelong medication ...

For the world’s first clinical trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a CD19 CAR T-cell therapy in rheumatoid arthritis, the research team ... initially enrolled six patients with particularly severe disease. The three women and three men, aged 31 to 69, had received up to eight targeted or biologic therapies over the previous ten years, none of which had been sufficiently effective. ...

For the researchers, the results from the first part of the COMPARE trial are highly encouraging: “Disease activity decreased markedly in all six patients. During follow-up of up to one year, three patients were in sustained remission without any medication for rheumatoid arthritis,” ..."

From the abstract:
"Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell-mediated B cell depletion has demonstrated efficacy in several autoimmune diseases.
Here we report clinical and molecular data obtained during the nonrandomized phase 1 part of the phase 1/2 COMPARE trial, evaluating safety and efficacy of mivocabtagene autoleucel (miv-cel), an autologous fully human CD19 CAR T cell therapy, in rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Six patients (three men, three women) with severe, treatment-refractory, anti-citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA)-positive RA received a single infusion of miv-cel after stopping all disease-modifying antirheumatic drug treatments and after standard lymphodepletion therapy.
Patients were followed for 36–52 weeks for safety and efficacy.
Primary endpoints were the incidence and severity of cytokine release syndrome (CRS), immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) and adverse events (AEs) within the first 4 weeks after treatment.
Secondary and explorative endpoints assessed clinical efficacy and cellular and humoral immune responses.
CRS occurred in all patients and was limited to grade 1 and 2 events. No ICANSs or serious AEs occurred; one dose-limiting toxicity was recorded (grade 3 transaminase elevation, resolved without sequelae).
The primary endpoint was met with acceptable safety findings, allowing advancement to phase 2.
CAR T cell therapy resulted in depletion of CD19+ B cells across blood and tissue, coinciding with a continuous decline of autoantibodies with seroconversion in four of the six patients for ACPAs against mutated citrullinated vimentin and five of six for rheumatoid factor immunoglobulin M.
Despite cessation of immunosuppressive treatments, disease activity improved in all patients (median 34% DAS28-CRP reduction at the latest follow-up with DAS28-CRP remission and American College of Rheumatology 70% response in 3 of 6 patients).
CD19 CAR T cells showed acceptable short-term tolerability in patients with treatment-refractory RA, justifying further evaluation. ..."

Cell therapy substantially reduces severe rheumatoid arthritis in first clinical trial

Patients own immune cells genetically modified in the laboratory, track down the disease driving B cells, even deep within tissues. Inflammatory foci such as those seen here around the knee joints of a study participant (magenta) are no longer detectable even several months after CD19-CAR T-cell therapy (right in the PET-MRI image). Swelling and pain have subsided, with improved mobility.

Tracking motions of single electrons at the space-time limit with attosecond time resolution or the extension of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle

Amazing stuff! Very impressive! This could be a breakthrough!

"... developed subfemtosecond scanning tunneling microscopy to directly visualize the quantum motion of individual electrons at this space-time limit as they tunneled through an energy barrier.
Modulating the barrier with the carrier field of near-infrared waveforms produced isolated sub–1-femtosecond electronic wave packets, the spatial extent of which depended on a complex interplay between multiphoton and field-driven dynamics. By balancing quantum path interference, the authors minimized the wave function’s space-time volume down to the attosecond-angstrom scale."

"... Between position and time, however, there is no Heisenberg uncertainty principle. A research team ... has now observed for the first time that the location and time evolution of an electron cannot be measured with arbitrary precision simultaneously. This so-called space-time limit has important implications for future applications. ...

ultrafast microscopes are developed and used to directly capture the motion of electrons, atoms, and molecules in microscopic slow-motion movies with the highest possible spatial and temporal resolution.
Ten years ago ... the motion of a single molecule in space and time was resolved for the first time using ultrafast scanning tunneling microscopy.
Compared to atoms and molecules, on this length scale electrons move a thousand times faster—namely, on time scales of attoseconds. ...

To achieve a corresponding increase in temporal resolution compared to previous experiments and to directly image and control the quantum dynamics of individual electrons, the researchers developed a new laser system.
Using its laser pulses they control electron motion on these extreme time scales in such a way that the electrons transfer from an atomically sharp metal tip to a silver surface over a distance of only a few atomic diameters. These electron movements are measured as current, and the temporal information is obtained by using two pulses of light. ...

The electron motion observed in this way exhibits signatures on attosecond timescales—which means that the light pulses can transfer electrons on these timescales, and one can watch them do so.
What makes this special is that the electrons do not move like classical particles. Rather, as quantum mechanical waves, the electrons penetrate the energy barrier between the tip and the sample, for which they actually do not possess enough energy according to the laws of classical physics. They “tunnel” through it, as if they were passing through a massive wall without destroying it. ...

To gain a better understanding of microscopic electron dynamics at the “space-time limit,” ... conducted complex quantum simulations. The calculations explain the experimental results with remarkable accuracy. They also show that the electron does not follow the light field immediately, but with a tiny delay of 500 attoseconds. ...

In this frontier region of the smallest spatial and temporal scales, the fundamental physical limits of quantum physics become apparent on multiple levels. The effect of the laser pulses, for example, cannot be clearly assigned to either the wave or photon picture of light, but bears features of both—and this is precisely what enabled the researchers to penetrate so deeply into the “space-time limit.” When electrons are moved by light pulses on such short time scales, this has complex consequences for the spatial distribution of the electrons, which are described in quantum mechanics as wave packets.

“The more precisely we want to pin down the electron’s position in time, the more energy we need to provide. And as a result, the electron wave packet spreads out more spatially.” The team investigated this relationship using a single atom placed on the surface to confine the electron wave packets atomically just before the light pulses arrive. This allowed them to directly determine the relationship between the spatial and temporal spread of the electron wave packets. Fortunately, despite strong excitation, the electron wave packets remain spatially defined with sufficient sharpness to enable atomically resolved microscopy on attosecond timescales.

With this latest breakthrough, the team is pushing the boundaries of a previously only vaguely suspected spatiotemporal limit of quantum mechanical electron wave functions, in order to systematically investigate for the first time how the temporal dynamics of electrons shape the spatial structure of their wave function. This also opens up entirely new possibilities for applications. For example, transferring an electron to a molecule corresponds to the smallest possible charge transfer; however, if the electron is confined to a tiny space-time volume, this corresponds to extremely high local peak current densities of up to 1 trillion amperes per square centimeter."

From the abstract:
"The dynamics of an electronic wavefunction often have non-trivial consequences on its spatial distribution, for example, during tunnelling or chemical bond formation.
Yet, revealing spatio-temporal coupling requires ultrafast videography at the intrinsic size of electronic wavefunctions, at the so-called space-time limit.
Here we experimentally access the intrinsic quantum motion of individual electrons at the space-time limit while they are tunnelling through an energy barrier, using atomic-scale lightwave-driven scanning tunnelling microscopy with attosecond time resolution.
While modulating the tunnelling barrier with two time-delayed near-infrared pulses forming phase-controlled single-cycle waveforms, isolated electron tunnelling transients shorter than 1 fs are identified.
The measured spatial extension depends on the interplay of multi-photon and field-driven dynamics, as confirmed by full quantum simulations.
We experimentally localize the attosecond-confined tunnelling wave packet on the angstrom scale and use it to map a single copper adatom on a silver surface. This fusion of attosecond science with atomic-scale scanning tunnelling microscopy makes it possible to study wavefunction dynamics inside atoms, molecules and solids."
