Cooler Earth core could solve Earth’s magnetic mystery

Amazing stuff! In the age of so called "climate change" and global warming hoax when cooler heads will hopefully prevail!

"New experiments suggest Earth’s iron core could be more than 1000°C cooler than longstanding estimates, potentially resolving a puzzle that has vexed geophysicists for decades.
By squeezing iron to nearly 2 million atmospheres between diamond anvils and heating it with rapid electrical pulses, researchers measured iron’s melting point at corelike conditions and found it melts at much lower temperatures than previous studies suggested. The result could help explain the so-called “new core paradox.”

Earth’s magnetic field has existed for at least 4 billion years. But many thermal models indicate the solid inner core—which as it slowly freezes today helps power the magnetic dynamo in the molten outer core—formed only about 500 million years ago.
The new measurements suggest the core lost heat more slowly than previous models assumed, allowing heat-driven convection alone to power the magnetic dynamo for most of Earth’s history, without requiring an ancient inner core. ..."

"... Today, that dynamo is sustained mainly by the slow freezing of the inner core, which releases heat and buoyant light elements into the liquid metal above. But some models of Earth’s cooling history suggest the inner core began to form just over half a billion years ago, raising the so-called “new core paradox”: What kept the dynamo running for the 3.5 billion years before the arrival of the inner core? ..."

"The melting temperatures and electrical resistivity of iron at high pressure are essential for understanding the thermal history and dynamics of Earth’s core, but significant differences in experimental results have led to divergent Earth models. We developed a pulsed Joule heating system to investigate the melting temperature and electrical resistivity of iron under the high pressure of Earth’s core. The system heats metal samples to temperatures exceeding 4000 K at pressures exceeding 2 Mbar. Precise sample fabrication, combined with a novel 5-color multianode spectroradiometer, enables high-precision heating control and temperature measurement (~ ±30 K) with sub-microsecond time resolution. Plateaus in temperature-time traces due to the latent heat of melting show outstanding reproducibility.
Our findings on the high-pressure melting curve of iron, based on more than 200 melting measurements extending to over 2 Mbar, reveal lower melting temperatures and a shallower Clapeyron slope relative to previous studies.
By extrapolating these to inner-core pressure and combining them with our measured resistivity of liquid iron (~75 μΩ cm), we propose that a relatively low adiabatic outer-core heat flow of < 10 TW and relatively low core-mantle boundary temperatures.
Our results indicate that thermal convection alone may have powered the geodynamo before the formation of the inner core, and that today’s lowermost mantle is likely to be fully solid."

Risks Grow as Earth’s Magnetic Field Weakens. Really!

Concerning? Is this just a long-term fluctuation/oscillation or a long-term trend?

Fact is we have only 11 years of detailed data. Not enough!

"A growing dent in Earth’s magnetic field, known as the South Atlantic Anomaly, has expanded by an area half the size of Europe over the past decade, according to new satellite data. 

Stretching between South America and Africa, the anomaly has significantly grown since 2014, raising concerns for satellites, astronauts, and high-altitude flights due to increased radiation exposure.

Scientists believe that shifting flows of molten iron beneath the Earth’s surface, possibly influenced by a massive subterranean “hot blob” under Africa, are warping the Earth’s magnetic field. ..."

Abstract
The Swarm satellite trio has provided global vector magnetic field measurements, with high precision and absolute accuracy, for the past eleven years. Based on this consistent, high quality, dataset we describe here how Earth’s main (core-generated) magnetic field has evolved between 2014.0 and 2025.0.
At the Earth’s surface, we find that the region in the South Atlantic where the field strength is weakest (below 26,000 nT), has expanded by 0.9% of Earth’s surface area and that the minimum intensity has decreased by 336 nT from 22,430 nT to 22,094 nT.
In the northern polar region, we find that in Canada the area of strong field (above 57,000 nT) has diminished, decreasing in size by 0.65% of Earth’s surface area and with the maximum field strength decreasing by 801 nT from 58,832 nT to 58,031 nT. In contrast the corresponding strong field region in Siberia has grown in size, increasing in area by 0.42% of Earth’s surface area, with the maximum field intensity increasing by 260 nT from 61,359 nT to 61,619 nT.
At the core-mantle boundary, reversed flux features under southern Africa have moved westward, converging towards reversed flux features that have moved eastwards under the mid-Atlantic.
In the northern polar region a strong flux feature under the Bering strait has moved westwards along the inner-core tangent cylinder. At low latitudes, under Indonesia and the western Pacific, field features have surprisingly moved eastwards. Field accelerations, including oscillations, are found to be most intense at low latitudes.

The Swarm mission has for the past decade been an essential source of global information on the changes taking place in Earth’s main magnetic field. Due to the long timescales of the underlying core processes, extending the mission lifetime for as long as possible, in particular for the higher satellite Swarm Bravo, is expected to yield further scientific insights. A long mission for Swarm Bravo would be an efficient means of ensuring that the present era of high quality geomagnetic observations from space continues as new missions come online."

Dancing sea turtles reveal how animals navigate magnetic fields for migration over thousands of kilometers and to find food

"... But a new study has presented the first evidence that loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) use magnetic fields as a compass to determine direction and also use it to determine their geographical location.

There’s a little dance involved, too.

Sea turtles are extraordinary navigators, able to trace unseen pathways across thousands of kilometres of the ocean and return to the same feeding sites migration after migration. ..."

"...  sea turtles returning to the same feeding sites again and again throughout their lifetimes — despite traveling up to 10,000 miles across the planet. ... hypothesized that these turtles used Earth’s magnetic field to memorize specific geographic areas that they associated with food ...

team conditioned loggerhead turtles to magnetic fields replicating those that exist in various oceanic locations, repeatedly feeding the turtles in some magnetic fields while not feeding them in others. When later exposed to the fields in which they were fed, the turtles exhibited “turtle dancing behavior,” indicating that they associated that specific magnetic signature with food. ..."

"Growing evidence indicates that migratory animals exploit the magnetic field of the Earth for navigation, both as a compass to determine direction and as a map to determine geographical position. It has long been proposed that, to navigate using a magnetic map, animals must learn the magnetic coordinates of the destination, yet the pivotal hypothesis that animals can learn magnetic signatures of geographical areas has, to our knowledge, yet to be tested.
Here we report that an iconic navigating species, the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), can learn such information. When fed repeatedly in magnetic fields replicating those that exist in particular oceanic locations, juvenile turtles learned to distinguish magnetic fields in which they encountered food from magnetic fields that exist elsewhere, an ability that might underlie foraging site fidelity. Conditioned responses in this new magnetic map assay were unaffected by radiofrequency oscillating magnetic fields, a treatment expected to disrupt radical-pair-based chemical magnetoreception, suggesting that the magnetic map sense of the turtle does not rely on this mechanism.
By contrast, orientation behaviour that required use of the magnetic compass was disrupted by radiofrequency oscillating magnetic fields. The findings provide evidence that two different mechanisms of magnetoreception underlie the magnetic map and magnetic compass in sea turtles."

A doughnut-shaped structure beneath Earth’s surface provides clues to the planet’s magnetic field

"Thermochemical inhomogeneities in the Earth’s outer core that enhance our understanding of the geodynamo have been elusive. Seismic constraints on such inhomogeneities would provide clues on the amount and distribution of light elements in the core apart from iron and nickel. Here, we present evidence for a low-velocity volume within the outer core via the global coda correlation wavefield. Several key correlogram features with a unique sensitivity to the liquid core show variations with wave paths remarkably slower in the equatorial than polar planes. We constrain a torus structure at low latitudes with ~2% lower velocity than the surrounding liquid outer core via waveform modeling. We propose a thermochemical origin for such a low-velocity torus, providing important constraints on the dynamical processes of the Earth’s outer core."

Geologists discover rocks with the oldest evidence yet of Earth’s magnetic field on Greenland

Amazing stuff! Why is Greenland called green land? The Vikings discovered a lush green land during the Medieval Warm Period (or global warming before the Industrial Age)!

"Geologists at MIT and Oxford University have uncovered ancient rocks in Greenland that bear the oldest remnants of Earth’s early magnetic field.

The rocks appear to be exceptionally pristine, having preserved their properties for billions of years. The researchers determined that the rocks are about 3.7 billion years old and retain signatures of a magnetic field with a strength of at least 15 microtesla. The ancient field is similar in magnitude to the Earth’s magnetic field today. ..."

"Recovering ancient records of Earth's magnetic field is essential for determining the role of the magnetosphere in protecting early Earth from cosmic radiation and atmospheric escape. We present paleomagnetic field tests hinting that a record of Earth's 3.7-billion-year (Ga) old magnetic field may be preserved in the northeastern Isua Supracrustal Belt as a chemical remanent magnetization acquired during amphibolite-grade metamorphism in the banded iron formation. Multiple petrological and geochronological lines of evidence indicate that the northernmost part of Isua has not experienced metamorphic temperatures exceeding 380°C since the Eoarchean, suggesting the rocks have not been significantly heated since magnetization was acquired. We use “pseudo” baked contact tests (intrusions emplaced 3.26–3.5 Ga ago) and a fold test (folding 3.6 Ga ago) to demonstrate that some samples preserve a ca. 3.7 Ga record of the magnetic field. We recover a field strength of >15 µT. This suggests that Earth's magnetic field may have been weak enough to enhance atmospheric escape during the Archean."

Half a billion years ago, Earth was on track to become just like Mars. Ancient rocks now show what saved our magnetic field

Amazing stuff! Getting to the core of geomagnetism! 

By the way, a geomagnetic reversal is also due! Plus, the very important geomagnetic field has been weakening for the past 2000 years, but in particular over the past 150 years ""At present, the overall geomagnetic field is becoming weaker; the present strong deterioration corresponds to a 10–15% decline over the last 150 years and has accelerated in the past several years; geomagnetic intensity has declined almost continuously from a maximum 35% above the modern value achieved approximately 2,000 years ago." Climate Change anyone!

"Thank Earth’s magnetic field for all the plentiful riches and diversity of life this planet has to offer. Without it, solar radiation would strip away the atmosphere and oceans, leaving behind a barren landscape. That’s in fact what happened to Mars, once believed to be a “blue” water world covered in a planetary ocean, which eventually turned “red” after it mysteriously lost its magnetic field some four billion years ago. ...
About 565 million years ago, scientists found evidence that the strength of Earth’s magnetic field plummeted to just 10% of today’s strength. If this trend had continued, all life on our planet would have been surely doomed. But right before the so-called Cambrian explosion of multicellular life on Earth, the magnetic field bounced back — and, according to a new study by geologists at the University of Rochester, this is all thanks to some fundamental changes in the inner core. ...
But in just 15 million years — almost a flash in geological time — the magnetosphere bounced back. ... this rapid renewal in magnetic field strength can be explained by the formation of a solid inner core about 550 million years ago, which essentially recharged the molten outer core. "Paleomagnetism can elucidate the origin of inner core structure by establishing when crystallization started. The salient signal is an ultralow field strength, associated with waning thermal energy to power the geodynamo from core-mantle heat flux, followed by a sharp intensity increase as new thermal and compositional sources of buoyancy become available once inner core nucleation (ICN) commences. Ultralow fields have been reported from Ediacaran (~565 Ma) rocks, but the transition to stronger strengths has been unclear. Herein, we present single crystal paleointensity results from early Cambrian (~532 Ma) anorthosites of Oklahoma. These yield a time-averaged dipole moment 5 times greater than that of the Ediacaran Period. This rapid renewal of the field, together with data defining ultralow strengths, constrains ICN to ~550 Ma. Thermal modeling using this onset age suggests the inner core had grown to 50% of its current radius, where seismic anisotropy changes, by ~450 Ma. We propose the seismic anisotropy of the outermost inner core reflects development of a global spherical harmonic degree-2 deep mantle structure at this time that has persisted to the present day. The imprint of an older degree-1 pattern is preserved in the innermost inner core."

Half a billion years ago, Earth was on track to become just like Mars. Ancient rocks now show what saved our magnetic field Earth's magnetic field bounced back right in the nick of time around 550 million years ago.

Earth's Weakening Magnetossphere

“On 15 January, they are set to update the World Magnetic Model, which describes the planet’s magnetic field and underlies all modern navigation, from the systems that steer ships at sea to Google Maps on smartphones.
The most recent version of the model came out in 2015 and was supposed to last until 2020 — but the magnetic field is changing so rapidly that researchers have to fix the model now.”

Surprisingly, this article is completely silent about the long overdue magnetic pole flip and the overall weakening of the magnetosphere for the past 200-300 years.

Just discovered this article about a new model that can also be used for the earth’s core:
“ … The new material is made from an alloy of indium and gallium (eGaIn) with various particles suspended within it. When flowing, its ability to generate or modify magnetic fields is up to five times greater than that of pure liquid metal. That, along with a significant increase in electrical conductivity, means researchers can use the material to study the effects of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD)—the magnetic properties of conductive fluids usually only observable in the cores of planets and stars. … Attempts to recreate the Earth's magnetic field have been attempted in other labs, but with limited success. Most involve the use of highly explosive liquid sodium, which requires very large models.
"People have tried these big flow chambers as large as three meters across, filled with liquid sodium and spinning around like a miniature Earth," said Brown.
With the material ... scientists can potentially create models as small as 20 square centimeters to recreate the phenomena of magnetic fields. … allows users to tune its viscosity and levels of magnetism to better fit their own research and applications.”

A Weakening Magnetosphere

The above documentary makes a number of scary statements:
  1. The magnetosphere has been weakening considerable over the past 200-300 years or so as evidenced by measurements
  2. The magnetic pole flip happens about every 200,000 years or so, but the last one occurred 530,000 years ago
  3. Without the magnetosphere life on earth is seriously threatened as it e.g. deflects most of the constant solar winds to reach earth’s surface and the atmosphere would disappear over time
  4. A magnetic pole flip may take thousands of years. During the transition period wandering multipoles may appear (as opposed to the normal dipole) etc.

An Underreported Apocalypse Waiting To Happen?

It appears to be a strangely underreported, very consequential natural phenomenon. If I were a conspiracy theorist, then I would assume that the citizens of the world are deliberately left in the dark.

Global Warming (a.k.a. Climate Change) and its asserted negative effects are a walk in the park compared to a magnetic pole flip. Unlike Global Warming, which human ingenuity can easily counteract, a permanently weakened or further weakening magnetosphere is beyond human capabilities.
