New $11bn Pinglu canal underscores China's turn toward Southeast Asia

In recent years, Southeast Asia has overtaken Europe and North America as China's top trading partner, and the new Pinglu Canal could help accelerate this even further. Built in just four years, the canal's rapid construction contrasts with lackluster progress on overseas canal projects involving Chinese interests. ..."

"The Pinglu Canal ... is a 134.2-kilometer inland river I-class waterway under construction between Xijin reservoir on the Yu river in Hengzhou and the lower part of the Qin River, allowing access to the Gulf of Tonkin.
