The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized a standalone Dutch robot that can draw blood

Maybe the first approved vampire robot? 😊 And the FDA released the announcement on my birthday! 😊

"... The machine, called Aletta, uses near-infrared light and ultrasound to locate a vein before autonomously applying a tourniquet, disinfecting the skin, inserting the needle, changing collection tubes, and applying a bandage.
The authorization will allow Aletta to be used on adults in clinics and other medical settings where patients do not stay overnight."

"... The device is authorized for use in adults in outpatient settings and must be operated under the oversight of a supervisor trained in phlebotomy.
One phlebotomist can oversee up to three Aletta devices at the same time ..."

"... The Aletta ARPD is designed to autonomously perform diagnostic blood collection. The system combines multimodal imaging, including near-infrared, ultrasound, and Doppler ultrasound to help distinguish between veins and arteries. It combines these capabilities with advanced robotics and artificial intelligence, to identify suitable veins, guide needle insertion, and collect blood samples with high precision and consistency. ..."

Neuroanatomy of the clitoris

Amazing stuff! However, this research is dated from March 2026, but has not come to my attention until now.

Notice how prevalent feminist ideology shines through in the context of this research! E.g. "Clitoris is one of the least studied organs" or "Cultural taboos around female sexuality". Is this not e.g. largely true for the penis too? E.g. is this some form of the infamous "penis envy" or phallic fantasies?

What is the first thing that comes to the mind of these Dutch researchers? Gender affirming surgery! Gross! Appalling!

From the abstract:
"The clitoris is one of the least studied organs of the human body [???]. The detailed anatomy of the clitoris is challenging to address through a gross dissection, as most of its parts are embedded internally, surrounded by pubic bone and several pelvic organs.
While clinical imaging methods such as magnetic resonance imaging can capture the gross 3D morphology, they lack the spatial resolution required to resolve the detailed structures.
In this study, we generated micron-scale computed tomography images of the female pelvises, leveraging a synchrotron radiation X-ray source. This unique data revealed the complex trajectory of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris, the main sensory nerve of the clitoris.
Notably, the nerve trunks within the clitoral glans were revealed, with the maximum diameter ranging from 0.2 to 0.7 mm. They showed a tree-like branching pattern projecting towards the surface of the glans.
We also revealed that some branches of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris ramify to innervate the clitoral hood and mons pubis.
Finally, the posterior labial nerve, a branch of the perineal nerves, was shown to innervate the surroundings of the clitoris and the labial structures.
These findings have an immediate impact on operations performed around the vulva area, such as gender-affirmation surgery and reconstruction surgery after genital mutilation."

Netherlands imposes far-reaching ban on goods from occupied territories by Israel

Bad news! Serious stuff! Antisemitism? What is going on in the Netherlands?

Enforcement of this new law will probably be a challenge!

"Within the past few days, the Netherlands has joined the list of European countries banning goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. The Dutch law, however, is more severe than those adopted by other countries - Spain, Belgium, and Ireland - and could set off a chain reaction that will deter Dutch companies from doing business with Israeli companies, according to conversations with sources familiar with the situation. The law passed with broad agreement in the center-left coalition that governs the country as an ordinance, without a debate in the States General (the Dutch parliament), and it will come into force on September 22.

The Dutch law is particularly severe in that the ban on goods applies not just to settlements beyond the Green Line in Judea and Samaria, as the bans imposed by other countries do, but also to the Golan Heights. ...

In addition, the law not only bans imports of products from these areas, but also their purchase or sale. The aim is to prevent circumvention of the sanctions by importing products into another European country and then selling them in the Netherlands. The law includes products of which only parts or ingredients originate in Judea or Samaria or the Golan Heights.

Another strict provision is that the law applies to all citizens of the Netherlands, even when they are not in the country. ...

Netherlands is also one of the European countries in which academic institutions have imposed an almost total boycott of their Israeli counterparts. The Dutch are also pushing behind the scenes for Israel to be expelled from the EU’s Horizon program for collaboration on research and innovation. ..."

Taiwan and Europe's Expanding Defense Technology Collaboration

Good news, but EU member countries were cowards in the past!

"In stark contrast to the discourse in the United States, there have been very few open conversations between Europe and Taiwan regarding defense spending or arms acquisitions. While the United States is actively exerting pressure on Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan ... to pass a national defense budget that will incorporate a USD 11.1 billion arms package, European countries have retained a cautious, low-profile stance on the matter. This is likely due to the diplomatic and economic pressure that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has historically exerted on Europe’s middle powers.
For example, in the 1980s, the PRC downgraded diplomatic relations with the Netherlands in response to the latter’s decision to sell two submarines to Taiwan. Reluctant to disrupt relations with such a large trading partner, the Dutch government solemnly agreed that it would refrain from further arms sales to Taiwan in the future.
In 1991 and 1992, France sold six naval frigates and 60 Mirage jets to Taiwan. In retaliation, Beijing closed the French Consulate-General in Guangzhou and publicly urged France to withdraw from the sale. France has not sold Taipei any other major weapons systems since.

As a result of Beijing’s coercion, three decades have passed since Europe supplied Taipei with any big-ticket defense items." (Source [I can not reach this Taiwanese web page from within China. Presumably, blocked by the Chinese Great Firewall.])

Scientists used AI to decode the rules of a mysterious Roman-era board game

Amazing stuff! Maybe this game will become a next Christmas gift sensation! 😊 When in Rome, do as the Romans do!

"Scientists used artificial intelligence to decode the rules of a mysterious Roman-era board game found on a limestone disc in the Netherlands, revealing a strategy game where players hunt and trap opponents’ pieces."

"... To get a clearer view of how the stone was used, Luk van Goor of restoration studio Restaura in Heerlen produced extremely detailed 3D scans. “Those scans reveal a lot of details of the lines, and they show that some of these lines are a fraction of a millimetre deeper than others. Those deeper lines were used more intensively. We also see that the stone’s edges are neatly finished, which indicates a final product rather than a piece awaiting further workmanship.” ..."

Origins of THC, CBD and CBC in cannabis revealed by resurrecting extinct ancestral enzymes active millions of years ago

Amazing stuff! Reconstructing extinct enzymes could have wide ranging applications in the future.

"... Researchers ... have experimentally demonstrated for the first time how cannabis acquired the ability to produce these cannabinoids. In the process, they also developed enzymes that show promise for the biotechnological production of cannabinoids for medicinal applications. ...

the researchers reconstructed extinct enzymes that were active millions of years ago in ancestors of the cannabis plant. In cannabis, enzymes play a key role in the production of cannabinoids—bioactive compounds with, among other things, medicinal potential. ..."

"... The researchers used a technique known as ancestral sequence reconstruction. Based on DNA from modern plants, this method makes it possible to infer what enzymes looked like millions of years ago. These ‘ancestral enzymes’ were then resurrected in the laboratory and experimentally tested. The study provides the first experimental evidence that the biosynthesis of cannabinoids such as THC originated within a relatively recent ancestor of cannabis and subsequently became increasingly refined. ..."

From the abstract:
"Cannabinoids, such as tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and cannabichromenic acid (CBCA), are bioactive and medicinally relevant compounds found in the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa L.).
These three compounds are synthesised from a single precursor, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), through regioselective reactions catalysed by different cannabinoid oxidocyclase enzymes. Despite the importance of cannabinoid oxidocyclases for determining cannabis chemotype and properties, the functional evolution and molecular mechanism of this enzyme family remain poorly understood.
To address this gap, we combined ancestral sequence reconstruction and heterologous expression to resurrect and functionally characterise three ancestral cannabinoid oxidocyclases.
Results showed that the ability to metabolise CBGA originated in a recent ancestor of cannabis and that early cannabinoid oxidocyclases were promiscuous enzymes producing all three THCA, CBDA and CBCA.
Gene duplication and diversification later facilitated enzyme sub functionalisation, leading to extant, highly-specialised THCA and CBDA synthases.
Through rational engineering of these ancestors, we designed hybrid enzymes which allowed identifying key amino acid mutations underlying the functional evolution of cannabinoid oxidocyclases.
Ancestral and hybrid enzymes also displayed unique activities and proved to be easier to produce heterologously than their extant counterparts.
Overall, this study contributes to understanding the origin, evolution and molecular mechanism of cannabinoid oxidocyclases, which opens new perspectives for breeding, biotechnological and medicinal applications."

The only American military cemetery in the Netherlands removes two displays honoring black American soldiers. Really!

Another sign that the Military Times is a left leaning publication! To call the Heritage Foundation a "right-wing think tank" gives it away easily besides spelling black Americans with a capital B.

Why are there no images of these two removed displays in this article? Just laziness/time pressure or?

The second display appears to be not so important and very narrowly focused.

Maybe Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) is here also on display by the Military Times and other left leaning news outlets! To blame president's  efforts to end DEI initiatives for the removal of these two panels is probably wrong.

Is it not astonishing how many left leaning media outlets picked up on this rather negligible story as if there was noting more important to report!

Neither one of these three news outlets and some other news outlets bothered to produce images of these removed panels!

"The Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten, the only American military cemetery in the Netherlands, has quietly removed panels displaying the contributions of Black American soldiers during WWII, sparking outrage from Dutch and American citizens.

One of the two displays featured an overall history of Black American military personnel fighting a double V campaign — victory at home and abroad — while the other told the story of George H. Pruitt, a Black soldier in the 43rd Signal Construction Battalion who drowned a month after the war’s end while attempting to save a comrade’s life in a German river. ...

The two panels were added to the visitor center in September 2024 after the American Battle Monuments Commission, a U.S. government agency that oversees the cemetery, received criticism from families and historians for not including the contributions of Black service members and their experiences fighting in the Netherlands. ...

The panels were reportedly rotated out in early March, one month after President Donald Trump’s executive order terminated diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, initiatives across the federal government. ...

The same month the panels were removed, The Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank [???], contacted the ABMC for its supposed failure to comply with Trump’s anti-DEI initiatives. ..."

Netherlands WWII cemetery removes displays honoring Black soldiers

Of course, the Guardian reported about this incident too, but notice no capital B for black. The Guardian also failed to show pictures of these removed panels.
A Dutch war cemetery added displays showing black US soldiers. Then they were quietly removed "Relatives fear the move is part of ‘the same virus affecting the US’, as historians and politicians say it coincided with Trump’s DEI purge [???]"

The Washington Compost did not disappoint either.

Nexperia dispute: Latest Update

I kind of knew that Nexperia was a serious matter, but I was not familiar with the details.

"The stand-off between Nexperia’s Dutch headquarters and its Chinese operations has escalated into a war of words, with both sides accusing the other of undermining supply chains and spreading misinformation.

Nexperia’s head office in the Netherlands said it could no longer “guarantee the authenticity and quality standards of products delivered from the Nexperia facility in China” after October 13, as it had “lost transparency and oversight over the manufacturing processes” at its integrated circuit assembly plant in Dongguan.

That has to be a first in the chip industry – the “front end” operation of an integrated device maker telling customers it doesn’t trust the quality of work done by its “back-end” folks.

Nexperia’s head office also accused its China unit of refusing to make payments and committing a series of alleged violations, including the misappropriation of corporate seals, the creation of unauthorized bank accounts, the redirection of customer payments, and conveying false information to clients and employees.

Meanwhile, China’s Ministry of Commerce accused The Hague of “going its own way, without taking concrete steps to resolve the issue”, even as Beijing considered exempting some Nexperia orders from an export ban that it imposed last month on the firm’s China unit.

Although the temperature in the Sino-US tech war has cooled a bit since the Trump-Xi summit in South Korea last week, a swift resolution to the Nexperia row is not likely, according to analysts.

“Both parties have entered a state of talking at cross-purposes,” said Zhao Zhijiang, assistant researcher with Beijing-based think tank Anbound.

The Hague has cited mismanagement by Nexperia’s Chinese CEO and national security concerns as reasons for seizing control of the company on September 30. Dutch authorities had become aware of plans to move the Nexperia wafer fab to China. That would have been a blow to Europe’s chipmaking infrastructure, which is struggling as it is to attract fabs.

Unsealed Dutch court documents also showed that the US government had threatened to add Nexperia’s Netherlands subsidiary to a blacklist on October 1 unless the Chinese management was removed.

A prolonged impasse in the Nexperia dispute would likely expose the vulnerability of global auto industry supply chains, as we saw during Covid-19 when chip shortages shut down car production. ..."

Dutch government seized control of Chinese owned semiconductor maker Nexperia

Serious stuff! Quite unusual I suppose!

"A diplomatic crisis erupted after the Dutch government seized control of semiconductor maker Nexperia, prompting its Chinese division to declare independence and defy European management. The Netherlands invoked a Cold War-era law to justify the takeover, citing security risks tied to the company’s Chinese parent."

"The Dutch government believed chipmaker Nexperia's Chinese owners planned to move its manufacturing operations to China, prompting the unprecedented seizure of the company that has sent shock waves through the global tech world.

Earlier this month, authorities seized control of Nexperia's management and ousted its Chinese CEO, Zhang Xuezheng, citing national security concerns. ..."

Brainwave biomarkers offer new hope for Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) treatment

Good news!

"... for the first time, used implanted electrodes to identify deep brain activity patterns associated with obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors, which could serve as a biomarker for OCD. ..."

From the abstract:
"There is an emerging need for objective neural biomarkers of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) to improve the efficacy of neuromodulatory interventions, most notably deep-brain stimulation (DBS), and develop closed-loop stimulation paradigms.
Preliminary data suggest that such biomarkers may be derived from local field potentials (LFPs) recorded in individual patients implanted with sensing DBS devices. However, reliable LFP signatures that are generalizable across OCD patients have yet to be identified.
Here, we relate LFPs recorded from sensing DBS electrodes in different basal-ganglia structures to core symptoms of OCD in 11 patients during personalized provocation of obsessions and compulsions.
We identify two general markers of compulsion: delta and alpha LFP power was significantly increased during all compulsions in the external globus pallidus (GPe), nucleus accumbens, anterior limb of the internal capsule (ALIC) and anterior lateral anterior commissure.
In mental compulsion subtypes, similar low-frequency increases were observed only in GPe (delta/alpha) and ALIC (alpha), suggesting that these signals possibly reflect more universal biomarkers of compulsivity unconfounded by motor function.
GPe delta power correlated with OCD symptom severity, establishing a meaningful connection between subcortical sensing DBS readout and patient experience.
ALIC alpha power was modulated by the phase of theta oscillations during compulsions, possibly reflecting pathological coupling of cortical networks in OCD.
Our results demonstrate unique, group-level LFP correlates of core OCD symptoms across disease-relevant basal-ganglia structures. These electrophysiological signatures help pave the way toward the development of biomarker-targeted neuromodulatory intervention for OCD."

Brainwave biomarkers offer new hope for OCD treatment "Scientists have identified the first brainwave biomarkers for OCD, opening the door to personalized, on-demand brain stimulation that targets distressing compulsive behaviors as they arise."

Neural biomarkers discovered for obsessive-compulsive disorder (original news release) "For the first time, researchers at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience and Amsterdam UMC have identified what happens in neural networks deep within the brain during obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. Using electrodes implanted in the brain, they observed how specific brain waves became active. These brain waves serve as a biomarker for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and are an important step towards more targeted treatments."

Brain activity across the entire neural network was measured during moments of obsession, compulsion, and relief, compared to a baseline as reference. Various types of brain waves were observed, with alpha and delta waves appearing relatively frequently.

New York's Medical Aid in Dying Bill a Shameful Act of False Compassion. Really!

Besides abortion (beginning of human life), assisted suicide (end of human life) are two among the biggest or most controversial hot button issues at least for the past 50 years or so in Western societies.

Here are some brief comments/questions:
  1. The right to individual suicide is undeniable when an individual voluntarily and without external influence/pressure chooses/consents to do so. This does not preclude or prevent any attempts to save the individual before, during or after suicide attempt. It does not prevent any loving care of the individual by family or friends.
  2. Is there any requirement to assist such an individual with their suicide attempt?
  3. Assisted suicide may prevent unnecessary suffering while committing or during suicide. Assisted suicide allows for consultation and a more peaceful passing away then perhaps otherwise.
  4. Is it legitimate or morally acceptable if an older, perhaps not very healthy,  individual chooses suicide to avoid becoming a burden to others? It is in accordance with the individual right to suicide and dignity of that individual.
  5. Should it be limited only to mentally fit adults? What about seriously suffering children?
  6. Should it be limited only to terminally ill or end of life individuals?
  7. Should doctors be actively involved in assisted suicide (e.g. administering injections etc.)? Or should doctors only provide means (e.g. pills) to commit suicide to the individual who then chooses to apply the means.
  8. Active, direct involvement in assisted suicide by doctors is in violation of their Hippocratic Oath (do no harm). Doctors are supposed to prolong and improve healthy lives not end lives.
  9. I believe it is empirically demonstrated that originally such laws have been passed to assist suicide limited only to terminally ill or end of life individuals, but later these laws were amended to include other individuals or all individuals.
Here is what the government of the Netherlands says about euthanasia of children:
"Euthanasia and minors
A child may request euthanasia from the age of 12. However, the following additional requirements apply:
the child must be capable of assessing and understanding what is best for them in their situation;
if a child is aged 12-15, euthanasia can only be carried out with the consent of the child’s parent or parents, or the child’s guardian;
if a child is aged 16 or 17, the parent(s) or guardian must be consulted in the decision-making process, but their consent is not required. ..."
Is the Netherlands going to far with euthanasia? Do the people of the Netherlands largely agree with how euthanasia is legalized?

"... On Monday, the New York state Senate passed legislation to legalize assisted suicide by a vote of 35 to 27. With just six Democrats joining Republicans in opposition, the Medical Aid in Dying Act now moves one step closer to becoming law and making New York the 12th state in the nation to legalize assisted suicide. ...

This bill has some of the loosest safeguards in the country, stripping away even the bare minimum protections seen in other states.

There is no mandatory waiting period. No requirement for in-person evaluations. Mental health screening is only required if a doctor suspects impaired judgment, which, given that evaluations can be done virtually, opens the door wide to inaccurate diagnoses. New York’s bill allows for assessments over Zoom and no follow-up. There is no requirement for physicians or pharmacists to report cases to the state.

Supporters insist the law is only for those near death, those with terminal diagnoses who are suffering. But we’ve heard this all before. We’ve seen what happens when assisted suicide becomes legal. In countries such as Canada and the Netherlands, eligibility quickly expanded beyond the terminally ill.

In the Netherlands, assisted suicide accounts for nearly 6% of all deaths, and proposals have been floated to allow otherwise healthy seniors over the age of 75 to request assisted suicide after six months of counseling.

In Canada, officials have documented cases of patients seeking death not due to pain, but because of poverty, loneliness, or fear of becoming a burden to others. ...

But there is another cost to this bill. The erosion of something deeply precious; namely, our culture of care. ...

They bathed their loved ones, managed pain medication, and sat with them through the long, quiet hours of dying.

Many were holding down jobs or raising kids at the same time. But they still chose to do it. To serve. To love. ..."
