U.S. aims to curb foreign distillation of or training on domestic models

Interesting! Is this an exercise in futility?

How much of a copycat is communist China?

"The Trump administration plans to implement new restrictions to prevent foreign entities, specifically companies in China, from training AI models to mimic the outputs of models built in the United States, a common practice known as knowledge distillation. Chief White House technology advisor Michael Kratsios said the administration intends to work with AI companies to identify efforts to distill U.S.-built models, defend against them, and punish foreign companies that attempt them. Chinese officials responded by calling for cooperation and accusing the U.S. government of seeking to suppress China’s technological development. Banning foreign entities from distilling knowledge from U.S. models would limit open development and potentially complicate international research collaborations." (Datapoints)

"The Trump administration is vowing to crack down on foreign tech companies’ exploitation of U.S. artificial intelligence models, singling out China at a time that country is narrowing the gap with the U.S. in the AI race.

In a Thursday memo, Michael Kratsios, the president’s chief science and technology adviser, accused foreign entities “principally based in China” of engaging in deliberate, industrial-scale campaigns to “distill,” or extract capabilities from, leading AI systems made in the U.S. and “exploiting American expertise and innovation.” ..."

Smart on Crime plagiarism by Mistress Kamala exposed by a prominent Austrian plagiarism hunter

As an aside, I think I prefer the broken windows theory!

Has an Austrian just dared to commit foreign election interference less than 30 days before elections? Just kidding! 😊

This book was published in 2009. Did nobody ever before claim that it contained plagiarism?

Note Mistress Kamala did not write this book herself! How much did Kamala write and how much the ghost writer contribute? This should be a fair question for the presidential candidate.

To hire ghost writers is common, but in her case it has perhaps more meaning and supports the allegation that she is incompetent and has achieved not much in her professional life.

Plagiarism is not uncommon among politicians! 😊

"... The so-called "plagiarism hunter," Austrian professor [???] Stefan Weber, found 27 times that Harris, the 2024 Democrat nominee for president, and her co-author allegedly committed some form of plagiarism. ..."

"Like Germany’s current minister for foreign affairs Annalena Baerbock, also Kamala Harris did plagiarize in a book, namely in „Smart on Crime“ (2009). ..."

Footnote: It appears Mr. Stefan Weber is not a professor. He might be a docent. See e.g. the Wikipedia entry on him.

Caveat: I did not read the book.

Does she not look eerily similar on this book cover  to her very recent vogue cover?

Harvard’s inclusive Plagiarism Problem Multiplies among DEI top level staff

What about other elite universities?

DEI [diversity, equity, and inclusion] ideology breeds plagiarism? Now that is inclusive! 😊

"Harvard has a plagiarism problem. At the beginning of the year, Claudine Gay resigned as university president following a plagiarism scandal. Weeks later, the Washington Free Beacon published a report indicating that Harvard’s chief diversity officer, Sherri Ann Charleston, apparently plagiarized passages in multiple academic papers.

Now allegations have emerged that another Harvard DEI administrator, Shirley Greene, of Harvard Extension School, plagiarized more than 40 passages of her 2008 dissertation, “Converging Frameworks: Examining the Impact of Diversity-Related College Experiences on Racial/Ethnic Identity Development.” ..."

Süddeutsche Zeitung: Die Jagd nach Plagiaten erfordert Augenmass

Versuch eines Denkanstoßes! Die Plage der Plagiate! Echt oder erfunden?

Alles Plagiate oder was?

Bill Ackman’s Wife, Neri Oxman, Apologizes for Plagiarism in Her 2010 Dissertation. Will she become a trendsetter?

Bill Ackman helped do oust the Black Privilege President of Harvard University, who was, among other things, accused of plagiarism in her scholarly work.

Looks like it triggered other people to come clean and take off some burden! 😊 Does it not already feel much better after such a confession! Amen! May her beauty shine brighter and be more pleasing and warmer  afterwards and people will take note!

Fake biomedical science papers are alarmingly common

Certainly concerning! This tendency has been reported for many years! Still going on strong! Fake it to make it!

I am not so sure about the indicators used for this study to identify potential fakes. The false alarm rate also seems to be high.

"After screening some 5000 papers, he estimates up to 34% of neuroscience papers published in 2020 were likely made up or plagiarized; in medicine, the figure was 24%. Both numbers, which he and colleagues report in a medRxiv preprint posted on 8 May, are well above levels they calculated for 2010—and far larger than the 2% baseline estimated in a 2022 publishers’ group report. ...
A 2 May announcement from the publisher Hindawi underlined the threat: It shut down four of its journals it found were “heavily compromised” by articles from paper mills. ..."

From the abstract:
"Background
Integrity of academic publishing is increasingly undermined by fake science publications massively produced by commercial “editing services” (so-called “paper mills”). They use AI-supported, automated production techniques at scale and sell fake publications to students, scientists, and physicians under pressure to advance their careers. Because the scale of fake publications in biomedicine is unknown, we developed a simple method to red-flag them and estimate their number.
Methods
To identify indicators able to red-flagged fake publications (RFPs), we sent questionnaires to authors. Based on author responses, three indicators were identified: “author’s private email”, “international co-author” and “hospital affiliation”. These were used to analyze 15,120 PubMed®-listed publications regarding date, journal, impact factor, and country of author and validated in a sample of 400 known fakes and 400 matched presumed non-fakes using classification (tallying) rules to red-flag potential fakes. For a subsample of 80 papers we used an additional indicator related to the percentage of RFP citations.
Results
The classification rules using two (three) indicators had sensitivities of 86% (90%) and false alarm rates of 44% (37%). From 2010 to 2020 the RFP rate increased from 16% to 28%. Given the 1.3 million biomedical Scimago-listed publications in 2020, we estimate the scope of >300,000 RFPs annually. Countries with the highest RFP proportion are Russia, Turkey, China, Egypt, and India (39%-48%), with China, in absolute terms, as the largest contributor of all RFPs (55%).
Conclusions
Potential fake publications can be red-flagged using simple-to-use, validated classification rules to earmark them for subsequent scrutiny. RFP rates are increasing, suggesting higher actual fake rates than previously reported. The scale and proliferation of fake publications in biomedicine can damage trust in science, endanger public health, and impact economic spending and security. Easy-to-apply fake detection methods, as proposed here, or more complex automated methods can help prevent further damage to the permanent scientific record and enable the retraction of fake publications at scale."
