Two-minute EV charging coming to Israel thanks to Chinese BYD

Good news!

"In the next few months, Chinese car manufacturers will raise the competitive threshold a further notch in the electric vehicle segment in Israel, through supercharger technology that makes it possible to charge a battery fully within a few minutes. Leading the charge is BYD, which has announced a global rollout of the technology under the brand name "Flash".

The venture has two sides to it. The first is the construction of public chargers with a charging rate of 1.5 megawatts, almost ten times the average rate of existing fast charging stations in Israel and three times faster than the current maximum rate of Tesla’s new fast chargers set up in Israel.

The second component is a series of new and rehashed electric and plug-in hybrid car models equipped with second generation batteries. These models are designed to support Flash charging, without overheating or other side-effects, over a long lifetime. ..."

Crafting Safe Sounds for Electric Vehicles

Indeed electric vehicles are too quiet in urban areas!

"... To address that risk, regulators in Australia, Europe, the United States, and other regions now require EVs to emit artificial warning sounds at low speeds, forcing some automakers to recall their cars for failing to meet safety standards. What might seem like a simple safety measure has become a complex web of engineering, involving acoustics, signal design, human perception, and regulatory compliance. ...

But designing those signals means navigating strict technical requirements and the messy realities of urban soundscapes. And it’s still not entirely clear how well those warning signals actually work in real-world conditions. ..."

Elektrische Käfer aus China

Made in Germany China!

Only 5 minutes needed to charge an EV with Chinese automaker BYD’s updated “Blade” battery

Good news! The gap between the time to recharge and refuel a car is closing!

Keep in mind, there are at least a hundred million or many more electric motorcycles in daily use in China.

"The minutes needed to charge an EV with Chinese automaker BYD’s updated “Blade” battery from low to 70%. In nine minutes, it can be almost fully recharged. In the U.S., fast-charging sessions can take around 20 to 40 minutes or more, depending on the vehicle. America is trying to catch up."

It’s time to pull the plug on plug-in hybrids

What a waste of taxpayers' money given the e.g. $7,500 federal tax subsidy [credits] for the purchase of such vehicles!

Apparently, these plug-in hybrids also do not meet reductions in CO2 emissions as expected!

"Plug-in hybrid vehicles are often touted as a bridge to battery-electric vehicles, promising to slash emissions by operating as EVs for short trips while relying on fossil fuels for longer ones. ...

They only deliver on that promise if they’re regularly charged. Real-world data drawn from the vehicles’ onboard computers shows that’s often not the case.

Using that data, the Fraunhofer Institute could determine how much of that energy came from charging when plugged in. It found that less than a third of 1 million PHEVs in Germany plugged in either occasionally or not at all. ...

Studies have previously shown that PHEVs produce about 3.5 times more emissions than their official ratings would suggest. This new study explains why since it directly assesses how much electricity the vehicles gained from charging. (PHEVs, like all hybrids, can operate in a mixed mode, using both gas and electricity. The study used data straight off the vehicles to disentangle the two.)

One of PHEV’s many shortcomings are their anemic batteries, capable of powering the vehicle for short distances. Some can only traverse a handful of miles, while many sold in recent years can operate on battery power for about 20 to 30 miles. ..."

From the abstract:
"The energy consumption of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) is significantly higher in real-world driving than in type approval procedures. An evaluation of one million vehicles highlights this major difference and points to the need for action in EU emissions regulation."

"... Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) are sometimes treated as a bridging technology and benefit from favorable credits toward CO₂ fleet targets in European regulations. Type-approval is based on assumptions about high electric driving shares, which are not confirmed in practice. Current OBFCM data show that the real fuel consumption of PHEVs averages around 5.8–6.1 l/100 km, which corresponds to CO₂ emissions of around 140 g CO2/km. Even under optimal charging conditions (= driving exclusively in charge-depleting mode), today's PHEVs do not achieve truly low emission ..."

Electric Vehicles Surpass Traditional Gasoline Cars in European Sales for First Time

One month of data does not make a trend! Perhaps special factors (not mentioned in or left out of the article) were also at work (e.g. tax subsidies)!

The article compares two different geographic areas, a larger one for EV vehicles with a smaller one for gas powered vehicles. Nice try!

"Inside EV’s reports that European consumers purchased more than 300,000 electric vehicles during December, marking a historic milestone in the automotive industry as EVs overtook traditional internal combustion engine vehicles in monthly sales figures.

The December sales figures show that 308,955 new electric vehicles were registered across the European Union, United Kingdom, and European Free Trade Association countries, which include Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Within the European Union alone, 217,898 electric vehicles were registered during the month. Both regional totals showed increases of just over 50 percent compared to the same period in 2024. ...

Traditional gasoline-powered vehicles registered 216,492 units in the European Union during December, representing a 19.2 percent decrease from 2024 figures. ...

However, hybrid vehicles currently maintain the leading position in European automotive sales. In December, 380,921 hybrid cars were registered across the EU, EFTA, and UK territories, while the European Union alone saw 324,799 hybrid vehicle registrations."

Ford said it expects to take about $19.5 billion in charges, mainly tied to its electric-vehicle business.

Bad news! Is it just the Ford Motor Company that messed up or does it mean something else?

How much is the Chinese competition responsible?

How much is the stupid socialist CAFE (Corporate average fuel economy) to be blamed!

"The sum is among the largest impairments taken by a company. Ford, which has lost $13 billion on its EV business since 2023, said it would bolster its lineup of gas-powered vehicles while shifting to hybrid and so-called extended-range EVs that include onboard gasoline engines. The goal is to pull back from loss-making assets and redeploy capital designated for EVs to models with higher profitability."

How bidirectional charging turns EVs into energy assets

This seems to be an interesting idea!

"Bidirectional charging is redefining the boundary between electric vehicles (EVs) and the grid. Once seen solely as energy consumers, EVs are now becoming distributed energy resources capable of powering homes, supporting grids, and enhancing energy resilience.

Enphase Energy’s IQ Bidirectional EV Charger represents this next step, providing a two-way power bridge between the vehicle, home, and utility network.

Designed for efficiency, safety, and global standards compliance, the system allows vehicles to discharge energy into homes during outages (vehicle-to-home, or V2H) and export energy back to the grid during peak pricing periods (vehicle-to-grid, or V2G). ..."

Norway discovered that electric buses made in China can be remotely controlled even inside a mine

Concerning!

Time to read again The Art of War by Sun Tzu published around 500 BC!

"Norwegian officials discovered that Chinese-made Yutong electric buses can be remotely accessed and potentially shut down via servers in China, even while parked deep in a mountain mine. The test, carried out by Oslo’s transit agency Ruter, revealed a remote chip in the buses that posed serious cybersecurity risks."

"This summer, Oslo’s public-transport authority drove a Chinese electric bus deep into a decommissioned mine inside a nearby mountain to answer a question: Could it be hacked? ..."

Capital of Norway Oslo finds out its 300 e-buses are remotely controlled by and from China

Bad news! How expensive were those e-buses compared to conventional busses?

So the public transportation authority of Oslo was not aware of these capabilities?

"... a rude awakening when it tested its electric buses for security flaws.

Some cities have gone all-in on their dedication to renewable energy and electric public transportation, but discovering that a jurisdiction does not actually control its own public property likely was not part of the idea. ...

Investigators discovered that the Chinese-built buses could be controlled remotely from their homeland, unlike the European vehicles.

Ruter reported that the Chinese can access software updates, diagnostics, and battery systems remotely, and, "In theory, the bus could therefore be stopped or rendered unusable by the manufacturer." ..."
