Software vendor disputes NJ governor's ‘glitch’ claim, says state approves foreigners on voter roll

Good news! This software glitch excuse sounded phony from the beginning!

Kudos to this software company to come out and risking their business with the government of NJ!

"Just hours after New Jersey Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherril blamed a software glitch for thousands of non-citizens being registered to vote, the software company involved issued a statement disputing the claim.

IDEMIA, the software vendor for the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, issued a statement saying it was the responsibility of the state government, which is completely controlled by Democrats, to verify eligibility to vote.

“IDEMIA works with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, and has for more than 40 years, to support the process through which eligible individuals may indicate their interest in registering to vote when applying for or renewing a driver’s license or state-issued identification card. IDEMIA’s role is to transmit information through the motor vehicle system,” IDEMIA said in a statement to Just the News. ..."

Cosmic Paradox Reveals the Awful Consequence of an Observer-Free Universe

"When one applies the powerful tools of quantum gravity to an entire universe—not just black holes—a glaring paradox appears: in certain “observer-free” models of a closed cosmos, the universe seems to admit only a single possible quantum state. This conclusion, first raised by Juan Maldacena, Carl P. Feinberg Professor in the School of Natural Sciences, and several collaborators in the School—including Member Ahmed Almheiri; Raghu Mahajan, Member (2019–20) and Visitor (2017–19); and Ying Zhao, Member (2018–21)—challenges one of physics’s deepest ideals: the hope of an objective, observer-independent description of the universe.  ..."

But almost 30 years ago, a landmark paper ..., showed that difficult string theory calculations could sometimes be sidestepped and carried out using familiar concepts from particle physics instead. The catch is that this approach only works if the universe has an unusual “anti-de Sitter” geometry. An anti-de Sitter universe has a boundary, often illustrated to resemble a tin can. Remarkably, everything that happens inside the can, from colliding particles to spinning black holes, is revealed by shadows on the can’s outer boundary. It’s as if the 3D universe inside were equivalent to an image on a flat screen, a concept physicists call holography. ...

The problem is that we don’t live in an anti-de Sitter tin-can cosmos. The nature of the universe’s expansion implies that it has no boundary. No matter how far you travel, you will never hit an edge. ...

In 2024, ... began to work on the problem of how to put an observer into a closed universe. ... thought of the observer as introducing a new kind of boundary: not the edge of the universe, but the boundary of the observer themself. When you consider a classical observer inside a closed universe, all the complexity of the world  returns, Zhao and her collaborators showed.

Diamond defects, now in pairs, reveal hidden fluctuations in the quantum world

"Now ... researchers have developed a diamond-based quantum sensor that reveals rich new information about magnetic phenomena at this minute scale. The technique uncovers fluctuations that are beyond the reach of existing instruments and provides key insight into materials such as graphene and superconductors. Superconductors have enabled today’s most advanced medical imaging tools and form the basis of hoped-for technologies like lossless power lines and levitating trains. ...

the team reported roughly 40-times greater sensitivity than previous techniques. ...

That enables unprecedented measurement and reveals details about magnetic fluctuations that hide in the statistical data of more conventional approaches. ...

Her team’s new technique is based on engineered defects near the surface of a lab-grown diamond. These diamonds, about the size of a large flake of sea salt ... one missing atom in a lattice of billions. But because those defects interact strongly with magnetic fields, and because they can be carefully engineered, they make excellent magnetic sensors.

Typically, these sensors are treated as individual points in space. In this latest advance, de Leon and her team built a system that implants two of these defects extremely close together, allowing the defects to interact in quantum-mechanical ways  ..."

"Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centres in diamond are widely deployed as local magnetic sensors, using single-qubit control to measure both time-averaged fields and noise with nanoscale spatial resolution1.
Moving beyond single qubits to multi-qubit control enables new sensing modalities such as measuring nonlocal spatiotemporal correlators or using entangled states to enhance measurement sensitivity.
Here we describe protocols for using optically unresolved NV centre pairs and nuclear spins as multi-qubit sensors for measuring correlated noise at nanometre length scales.
For noninteracting NV centres, we implement a phase-cycling protocol that disambiguates magnetic correlations from variance fluctuations, leveraging the presence of a third qubit, a 13C nucleus, to effect coherent single-NV spin flips and enable phase cycling even for co-aligned NV centres that are spectrally unresolved. For length scales around 10 nm, we create maximally entangled Bell states through dipole–dipole coupling between two NV centres and use these entangled states to directly read out the magnetic field correlation, rather than reconstructing it from independent measurements of unentangled NV centres.
Importantly, this changes the scaling of sensitivity with readout noise from quadratic to linear.
For conventional off-resonant readout of the NV centre spin state (for which the readout noise is roughly 30 times the quantum projection limit), this results in more than an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity. Finally, we demonstrate methods for detecting high spatial- and temporal-resolution correlators with pairs of strongly interacting NV centres."

Scholars Discover a Universal Law of Memory

Amazing stuff! A unification of human memory and mathematics?

Human memory as a random tree with multiple key points along the way when a story is retrieved from memory. 

"... a team of IAS scholars to a surprising discovery about the individualized content and organization of our memories: they are united by a common mathematical structure.

In a study investigating how people recall stories, the team discovered a general law that governs the way we store and compress meaningful memories. Although memories align with an individualized sense of what matters, our brains use a common architecture to organize our recollections, nesting information in a hierarchical structure that helps us navigate them efficiently.

Even more striking is the team’s finding that these hierarchical structures give rise to a universal pattern in the way people encode and communicate what they remember. For the first time, scientists are offering evidence that humans compress information into a limited number of “building blocks” that represent detailed stories. 

These units of information are capacious, able to summarize ever greater swaths of information as a narrative grows. But no matter how long or short the original story—whether it is War and Peace or a quick jolt of horror from Stephen King—people will still use the same finite set of units to relay their memory of the narrative.  ...

A specialist in statistical mechanics, he applies methods originating in the probabilistic explanation of complex physical systems to neuroscience. ...

This model, described as a “random tree ensemble,” highlights above all the efficiency of our biology. Our working memory—the system our brains use to hold, sort, and retrieve information for active processing—is, by nature, limited. The model displays how our brains optimize for this limitation, using hierarchical networks that cascade downward in a tree-like formation to nest details inside meaningful events.

To recall a story or a series of autobiographical events, we travel down this tree, which accounts for the complex nature of narrative memory. ...

The IAS team modeled subjects’ recollections using linguistic clauses as fundamental building blocks (similar to how physics models the collective behavior of atoms) and analyzed their structural organization statistically. 

The resulting model shows that the average length of our recall of a story does not increase in proportion with the length of the story itself. Instead, as a story becomes longer and more detailed, our brains compress the narrative into resourceful summaries. 

The model also makes an important new prediction: as narratives grow longer, a universal, scale-invariant limit emerges. 

Whether we give people [subjects of study] a novel or a short story, the average distribution of their summarization and compression levels would be exactly the same ... “The chance a clause from the recall will summarize 10% of the story is independent of the story’s length, for example. Our brains seem to have evolved to consolidate information in this universal way to make the most of our physiology’s advantages and limitations.” ..."

From the abstract:
"Traditional studies of memory for meaningful narratives focus on specific stories and their semantic structures but do not address common quantitative features of recall across different narratives.
We introduce a statistical ensemble of random trees to represent narratives as hierarchies of key points, where each node is a compressed representation of its descendant leaves, which are the original narrative segments.
Recall from this hierarchical representation is constrained by working memory capacity. Our analytical solution aligns with observations from large-scale narrative recall experiments.
Specifically, our model explains that
(1) average recall length increases sublinearly with narrative length and
(2) individuals summarize increasingly longer narrative segments in each recall sentence.
Additionally, the theory predicts that for sufficiently long narratives, a universal, scale-invariant limit emerges, where the fraction of a narrative summarized by a single recall sentence follows a distribution independent of narrative length."

Lab builds its first nuclear fusion stellarator in 50 years and opens the door for research into new plasma physics

Good news! The faster we succeed with realizing the potential of nuclear fusion, the fast we can bury the greatest scam of our time, the Global Warming hoax and Climate Change religion.

"For the first time, scientists have built a fusion experiment using permanent magnets, a technique that could show a simple way to build future devices for less cost and allow researchers to test new concepts for future fusion power plants. ...
a new type of stellarator, a twisty machine that confines plasma, the electrically charged fourth state of matter, to harness the fusion process that powers the sun and stars and potentially generate clean electricity.

"Using permanent magnets is a completely new way to design stellarators," ... the device, known as MUSE. "This technique allows us to test new plasma confinement ideas quickly and build new devices easily."

Stellarators typically rely on complicated electromagnets that have complex shapes and create their magnetic fields through the flow of electricity. Those electromagnets must be built precisely with very little room for error, increasing their cost. ..."

From the abstract:
"This paper documents the design and construction of MUSE, the world's first permanent magnet (PM) stellarator and the first quasi-axisymmetric experiment. The purpose of MUSE is to develop and assess a new way of building optimised stellarators that uses simple planar coils PMs. Our PM optimisation algorithm consists of initialising a geometry to pack dipoles densely, running the FAMUS code to minimise surface field error subject to PM constraints and applying discrete jumps to reach a physically realisable solution. FAMUS treats the PM system as a set of ideal point dipoles. From there we construct finite-volume magnet towers to be housed in 3D-printed PM holders. We describe the design of the PM holders, which were validated by laser metrology. We analyse the effects of finite permeability, sensitivity to perturbations and magnetostatic forces. An exact analytic formula for the magnetic field from a finite-volume PM tower is presented to compute PM–PM forces and stress on the PM holder. Stellarator construction is complete and experiments are underway."

Q&A with Julia Ott

The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ is drifting towards socialism.

Prof. Julia Ott said among other things that "... Myths about venture capital stand in the way of democratic deliberation about how our society might direct the socially generated surplus of today's economy towards building a better economy for the future ..."

This pure and very naive socialism coming from this professor!

When asked "What question within your field do you most want to answer and why?" Prof Ott answered: "...
1) Why do so many Americans believe that "venture capital" is essential for economic growth and technological innovation—and that inequality is the price we must pay? 2) How did the discourse of meritocracy displace a more overt language of white supremacy in American political culture (at least for a time) ..."
Amazing that such a biased ideologue becomes a professor in the U.S. and is then interviewed by the prestigious IAS!

Very Old Fashioned Institute For Advanced Studies

Just watched a lecture video published by the Institute for Advanced Studies located on Einstein Drive in Princeton, New Jersey. Originally, I was watching a lecture from April 3, 2017 given by Ran Raz when I discovered that the lectures at the IAS are still using chalk and blackboard. As an aside, Ran Raz was even using a dry sponge to clean the chalk of the blackboard, well you can imagine what that looked like ...
I thought, OK this video was recorded almost to years ago. Let’s see the most recent available video. At the time of writing this blog, this was: Non-commutative rank by Visu Makam University of Michigan; Member, School of Mathematics February 5, 2019.

I could not believe that the lecturers at the IAS are still using the extremely outdated technology of chalk and blackboard. I was actually deeply shocked that such brilliant minds waste time and effort on this ancient technology in the digital age. This is highly inefficient and amateurish! Almost like throwback!

The Destruction Of Free Markets In The U.S Goes On - Tesla

One of the big news in today’s (3/12/2014) Wall Street Journal was “Tesla vs. New Jersey: The Car Dealers Strike Back”.

Apparently, three states, i.e. Arizona (surprise), Texas (incredible), and now New Jersey, so far have prohibited direct sales of vehicles by Tesla Motors.

How Is This Possible In The United States Of  America?

An observer from China may conclude that the U.S. is sometimes worse than communist China in suppressing free markets and competition.

How is it possible that well organized, vested interests like car dealers in various or most states can carve out franchise privileges for themselves to exclusively sell cars at the expense of consumers?
