Inside Xi Jinping’s Demands at the U.S.-China Summit: A Private West Wing Room to Rest

In what physical shape is the Chinese dictator (in power since 2012)? Was it temporary or is it chronic?

The question of succession is becoming more urgent!

"Chinese officials made unusual demands that the U.S. accommodate Xi Jinping’s need for rest during a summit with President Trump, offering a rare glimpse of the 73-year-old leader’s emerging physical limitations, said people familiar with the visit planning.

Chief among the requests was a private room inside the West Wing for Xi to take a break between events, with only his wife, Peng Liyuan, permitted to join him ..."

President Trump and President Xi strike a deal to cut tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods

Good news! Once more The Art of the Deal!

Yesterday, I was speculating here that perhaps "there is something in the pipeline".

However, this approach to negotiate favorable trade deals with individual countries is controversial.

"The White House announced that President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have reached a deal to cut tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods.

According to a White House fact sheet, China has agreed to import at least 10 million metric tons of coal from the U.S. in 2027 and 2028.

The agreement covers U.S. exports of agricultural goods, wood products, fish and seafood, cosmetics, and medical devices, the White House said.

The Chinese imports in the deal include small appliances, holiday decorations, toys as well as children’s car seats. ..."

Was the summit between President Trump and President Xi Jinping a dud?

It appears no announcements of major results were made. However, perhaps in coming weeks or months we may learn more. Maybe, there is something in the pipeline.

Xi Jinping has been the President of China for about 13 years. Maybe China needs a new president!

At least President Trump offered a very warm welcome to President Xi Jinping and his wife. Whatever that is worth!

US President Trump personally welcomes Chinese President Xi and first lady Liyuan

I am not an expert on protocol or how close these two leaders are, but this seemed to be a warm welcome of Xi Jinping and his wife right after they disembarked from the plane.

Maybe Trump is up to something!

Floods in Tibet: restrictions and disinformation by China are impeding vital news

Bad news!

Remember China illegally occupies Tibet since 1950!

There have been multiple news reports by different sources that again (like Covid-19) the Communist Party of China is secretive and repressive about the scope and damages of this latest natural catastrophy.

"Censorship in Tibet

In neighbouring Tibet, the difficulties in accessing information are even more worrying, and the contrast with Nepal is striking. At the time of writing, no independent Tibetan media outlet or international news organisation has been allowed access to the disaster-stricken area, according to RSF information.
This reflects a long-standing practice of the Chinese regime, which exercises some of the strictest control in the world over media professionals. As RSF has long noted, only journalists pre-approved by the authorities have been allowed to enter the territory, generally as part of tightly monitored reporting missions.
In the wake of the disaster, the Chinese regime only authorised state media to cover the floods, with reports emphasising the regime’s achievements and successes in relief efforts rather than providing a comprehensive account of the scale and impact of the disaster. According to the Chinese state-run newspaper Xinjing Bao (The Beijing News), the authorities have also punished at least ten internet users for “spreading rumours” related to the disaster. ...

“In recent years, under Xi Jinping’s tenure, Tibet has become a de facto information black hole. No independent Tibetan media, nor any international media, are permitted to freely cover news from this region. ..." ..."

Floods in Nepal and Tibet: restrictions and disinformation are impeding vital news | RSF "As the list of identified victims and missing persons continues to grow, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is sounding the alarm about the obstacles preventing the public from accessing vital information following the floods that struck Nepal and Tibet on 26 August.
In Nepal, partial cuts to telephone and electricity networks, the lack of accessibility to certain disaster zones and misinformation on social media are hindering journalists’ reporting.
In Tibet, these obstacles are compounded by restrictions imposed by the Chinese authorities, who are preventing the press from freely accessing affected areas. This lack of access to reliable information is also fuelling the spread of false reports about the scale and consequences of the disaster."

Hubei province prominent leader issues a challenge to Xi Jinping's economic policies

Good news, if confirmed! These are rare kind of news coming out of China!

Unfortunately, it appears that Nikkei is the only news media reporting about it and it is behind paywall without naming the "prominent leader". Too bad!

President Trump warns Putin the Terrible, Xi Jinping against selling weapons to Iran and participating in the Iran war on Truth Social

Serious stuff! Why did President Trump make this threat now public and via social media?

Caution: Will the US enter World War III with so far very coward European powers! I hope and pray, I am wrong! However, if history is any guide what used to be a local/regional war with limited scope/scale have a way or can easily escalate and expand far beyond.

See also my previous, related blog post here.

"President Donald Trump on Friday warned Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin against selling weapons to Iran amid its conflict with the U.S.

Active fighting resumed in recent weeks following the collapse of the ceasefire agreement.

"President Xi, at our recent meeting in Beijing, China, told me that he would not, under any circumstances, give or sell Weapons to the Islamic Republic of Iran — And that statement included Chinese Companies," he posted on Truth Social. "Considering our relationship, I take him at his word and, besides, l am doing him very big favors, also."

"Likewise, President Putin, despite the horrible War going on in Ukraine (The relationship remains, as it does with President Zelenskyy), told me that he would not sell Weapons to Iran," he added. "He understands that I do not sell Weapons to Ukraine, but to NATO Countries. They pay full price, and how those Weapons are distributed, I have no idea. Therefore, two major Countries that people speak of often in terms of Iran are, in my opinion, not participating. If they did, it would be very bad for them — Certainly not in their best interests." ..."

China Has Quietly Accepted a Nuclear North Korea

A concerning development if confirmed!

Did China indeed relent to the evolving closer cooperation between two rogue states, i.e. Russia under Putin the Terrible and North Korea?

"Xi Jinping has made a consequential strategic choice. Faced with Kim Jong Un’s growing partnership with Vladimir Putin, Xi is rebuilding Chinese political and economic support for North Korea and abandoning the pretense that Beijing is seriously pursuing its denuclearization.

The result will not be a more restrained Kim. It will be a more dangerous one.

Kim is now positioned to draw military assistance and treaty protection from Russia while continuing to receive the trade, money and political backing that only China can provide. As his nuclear arsenal and conventional forces improve, he will have stronger incentives to take risks against South Korea and the United States. Most alarmingly, should China initiate a conflict over Taiwan, Kim could see an opportunity to exploit America’s distraction. ...

For years, Chinese officials claimed that Beijing wanted both stability and denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. Stability was always the higher priority, but China at least supported denuclearization negotiations and some efforts to constrain North Korea’s weapons programs.

That policy is effectively over.

During Xi’s June 2026 visit to Pyongyang, the first by a Chinese leader in seven years, Xi  omitted any meaningful reference to denuclearization. Premier of North Korea Pak Thae-song met with Xi in early July, where Xi again did not mention denuclearization. The silence was striking.
These instances followed other notable omissions, including at the 2025 North Korea-China summit.
The last time a Chinese official explicitly called for North Korean denuclearization was in May 2024 at the South Korea-China-Japan trilateral summit.  Beijing has tacitly accepted North Korea as a permanent nuclear power, hoping that in exchange it will regain influence over Kim.

Xi’s shift reflects the emergence of Kim’s “Russia option.”

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine [in 2022], North Korea has become an important supplier of artillery ammunition, ballistic missiles and military personnel to Moscow. In return, Russia has offered Kim economic support, diplomatic protection, military cooperation and assistance with missiles, satellites, air defenses and other advanced capabilities. Their 2024 comprehensive strategic partnership treaty includes a mutual-assistance commitment. ..."

China plans to hit an asteroid with a Mach 26 projectile in planet defence test. Really!

Why has China been so busy again and again to demonstrate what a global superpower they are for several years? Here is another example!

Is Xi Jinping (age 73, in power for over 13 years) becoming a sort of megalomaniac?

How Xi Jinping Steamrolls Dissent With Tactics From Stalin and Mao

This should be an interesting article by the Wall Street Journal!

When will China become a democracy to compete with the largest democracy on Earth, i.e. India?

Xi Jinping (age 73) is the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party since 2012.

"Chinese leader Xi Jinping is employing the sort of autocratic tactics once wielded by Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong to stamp out opposition and stack the leadership with acolytes as he prepares to extend his reign.

In a throwback to the most powerful Communist leaders of the 20th century, Xi has purged dozens of senior officials—even his own protégés—overseen the growth of a cult of personality and demanded absolute loyalty. ..."

Putin the Terrible arrives in China just days after Donald Trump’s visit. This is Xi Jinping's opportunity to become a great leader

Hopefully, Xi Jinping will tell the megalomaniac and warmonger Putin the Terrible to end the war in the Ukraine and return all occupied areas (incl. Crimea) to the Ukraine!

What legacy does Xi Jinping want to leave behind? Go down in history at best as a mediocre leader of a communist party or the great, responsible global leader of the  superpower China acting on behalf of humanity and peace?

Trump and Xi agree: Iran can never have a nuclear weapon and no control over the Strait of Hormuz

Good news! Bravo!

I don't think, the Chinese government/communist party likes suicidal, religious fanatics and a state sponsor of terrorism like Iran!

China has to make choices to become a responsible global power! Supporting a regime like in Iran can not be part of it.

"President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping found rare common ground Thursday on Iran, with Beijing signaling support for two core U.S. demands: reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring Tehran never obtains a nuclear weapon.

The agreement came during Trump’s high-stakes visit to Beijing, where the two leaders met for more than two hours at the Great Hall of the People and discussed a broad range of issues, including trade, fentanyl, Taiwan, energy and the war that has effectively shut down one of the world’s most important oil corridors.

Trump said Xi offered to help push Iran toward a deal, even as China continues to buy large amounts of Iranian oil. ..."

The expectations regarding the President Trump and General Secretary Xi Jinping summit in Beijing are high!

Update of 5/17/2026: It appears both men were not too concerned about their legacy or otherwise they would have done more bold things together! E.g. had Xi Jinping declared to try more democracy, pluralism and federalism in China with the aim to reunite with Taiwan, he would be remembered like one of the great historic leaders of China. Jimmy Lai was not released!

Will it be a watershed historic event? Hope and pray!

I will be myself in Beijing on Friday 5/15 to attend to an appointment at the German embassy for personal reasons.

Will this event trump (pardon my pun) the famous "President Richard Nixon’s historic eight-day visit to the People's Republic of China from February 21–28, 1972, ended 25 years of diplomatic separation between the U.S. and China. Meeting with Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai, Nixon aimed to normalize relations and gain leverage over the Soviet Union, producing the Shanghai Communiqué."?
