Are Vietnam and Thailand helping China dodge US tariffs?

Good question! Or how about other countries?

Since the tariffs are not applied uniformly across all countries certainly opportunities for circumvention abound.

"A sharp increase in exports from several Southeast Asian countries to the U.S. this year is stirring the debate over claims that Chinese goods are being rerouted to evade American tariffs. ..."

Can Thailand Beat Its Southern Insurgency? with James Ker-Lindsay

Recommendable!

Will the Thai Canal finally be built? How eager is China? Will Japan support it?

I must admit either I forgot or I never heard of this major civil engineering project that could well compete with the Panama Canal or Suez Canal!

"The Thai Canal .. also known as the Kra Canal ... or the Kra Isthmus Canal ..., is any of several proposals for a canal that would connect the Gulf of Thailand with the Andaman Sea across the Kra Isthmus in southern Thailand. Such a canal is suggested to significantly reduce travel times through heavily-navigated trade routes.

The canal would provide an alternative to transit through the Strait of Malacca and shorten transit for shipments of oil to Japan and China by 1,200 km. China refers to it as part of its 21st century maritime Silk Road. Proposals, as of 2015, measure 102 kilometres long, 400 meters wide and 25 meters deep. ...

A canal through the Kra Isthmus, which would shorten shipping times around Asia, was suggested as early as 1677. Thai King Narai asked the French engineer de Lamar to survey the possibility of building a waterway to connect Songkhla with Marid (now Myanmar), but the idea was discarded as impractical with the technology of that time. ..."

Update at 23:25 on 10/26/2025: Trump also co-signed the ceasefire agreement.

Good news! Blessed are the peacemakers! Nobel Peace Prize for Trump!

"The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia signed an enhanced ceasefire deal on Sunday in the presence of US President Donald Trump, whose intervention in their fierce border conflict earned him a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. ...

The two countries, in a joint declaration, committed to establishing an ASEAN observer team, military de-escalation and removal of heavy weapons from their border area, with Thailand agreeing to release 18 Cambodian prisoners of war if the measures were implemented.

They also agreed to coordinate on removing landmines, which were the trigger for the fighting after a Thai soldier was maimed during a border patrol. Thailand has accused Cambodia, one of the world's most landmine-scarred countries, of laying new ordnance, which it denies. ..."

Thai PM Paetongtarn in hot water over leaked call with Cambodia's Hun Sen

Bad news!

"Less than a year after its formation, the government of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is in crisis as a key party leaves the ruling coalition over a leaked conversation related to Thailand's border disputes with Cambodia.

On Wednesday evening, the Bhumjaithai Party, the second biggest in Paetongtarn's government, announced its exit, leaving the ruling coalition with only a slim majority in the lower house. Meanwhile, public anger has grown against the prime minister, with some calling for her resignation."

Egg-Harvesting Scheme in the Republic of Georgia involved Thai women and a Chinese criminal syndicate

Bad news!

"The Georgian Interior Ministry has launched an investigation into human trafficking after several women who sought work there as surrogates reported being forced to have their eggs removed.

Background: Last month, three Thai women were reportedly rescued from a house in Tbilisi. Thai police said the women were brought to Georgia by a Chinese criminal syndicate under the pretense of surrogacy—and were then forced to have their eggs removed for others’ IVF procedures.

Impact: The accusations have sent “shockwaves” through the international surrogacy industry in Georgia, which has seen a boom since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine."
