Wuhan Institute of Virology in the Rocky Mountains? Biosafety committee found dozens of accidents at NIH-funded lab in 3 years

Is this not peculiar or is it bizarre! Zoonoses versus lab leak hypothesis!

Well, some experiments at the infamous Wuhan Institute of Virology were funded by the National Institutes of Health under its infamous Dr. Anthony Fauci when the Covid-19 global pandemic broke out.

According to Google and Bing search, this story was not widely reported to say the least. Caution is advisable!

"... Fort Collins, Colorado, could have become the next Wuhan, China, with dozens of lab accidents just this decade involving outbreak-prone pathogens in animals including coronaviruses, Zika and tuberculosis, according to a group that fights taxpayer-funded animal testing. ...
The "incident reports" from Colorado State University's Institutional Biosafety Committee minutes, obtained by Colorado Open Records Act request, detail 64 lab accidents from 2020 through 2023, the White Coat Waste Project said this week.

The National Institutes of Health chipped in more than $8 million in 2021 and 2023 to build a new CSU bat lab and import bats with Nipah virus and SARS-related coronaviruses via the EcoHealth Alliance, WCW discovered last fall, dubbing the campus "Wuhan West." ...
CSU is far from alone in preventable lab accidents, according to data from the Federal Select Agents Program, the Daily Mail reported this month. The CDC-USDA program lists more than 600 releases of "controlled" pathogens in the U.S. from 2014-2022, including the mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus and the bacterial infection Q fever. ..."

"... WCW has uncovered an alarming pattern of recent animal lab accidents at Colorado State University, which is working with the notorious EcoHealth Alliance and the NIH to build a new bat lab and breeding colony.
Never-before-seen records obtained by WCW show that from 2020 to 2023, dozens of animal lab accidents with bats, cats, hamsters, and mice exposed CSU staff to coronaviruses, Zika, rabies, Tuberculosis, and other dangerous pathogens that can cause deadly outbreaks. ..."

United Kingdom National Health Services AI test spots tiny breast cancers missed by human doctors

Good news! Cancer is history (soon)! This is only the beginning and it could get much better!

Need mammograms be done more often than every 3 years at least in some cases like family history?

What is also remarkable is the very high acceptance rate for the use of AI in their diagnosis (over 99%) by participating women in this study!

"The tool, called Mia, was piloted alongside NHS clinicians and analysed the mammograms of over 10,000 women.

Most of them were cancer-free, but it successfully flagged all of those with symptoms, as well as an extra 11 the doctors did not identify.

At their earliest stages, cancers can be extremely small and hard to spot. ...
Because her 6mm tumour was caught so early she had an operation but only needed five days of radiotherapy. Breast cancer patients with tumours which are smaller than 15mm when discovered have a 90% survival rate over the following five years. ...
Without the AI tool's assistance, [her] cancer would potentially not have been spotted until her next routine mammogram three years later. She had not experienced any noticeable symptoms. ...
Of the 10,889 women who participated in the trial, only 81 did not want the AI tool to review their scans. ...
it took six years to build and train Mia, which is run on cloud computing power from Microsoft, and it was trained on "millions" of mammograms from "women all over the world". ..."

Drones and robots to boost farming, eases labor shortages presented at the 2024 World Agriculture Expo

The agricultural revolution must go on! 😊

"... Hylio, a Houston-based tech company, was granted an exemption from the Federal Aviation Administration in February for a single pilot to operate swarms of heavy drones over farms. Three battery-powered drones, some weighing as much as 400 pounds each, can now be used at one time to spray fertilizer and pesticides on fields of produce. That task is typically handled by farm workers or crop-dusting planes.  ...
Crop-dusting drones were among the many high-tech agricultural tools on display at the February 2024 World Agriculture Expo in Tulare, in the heart of California's Central Valley. ...
Laser Weeder, which uses powerful infrared lasers and high-speed cameras to identify and blast weeds to oblivion in a matter of seconds. ...
Developers of these high-tech tools said their inventions could help ease the decadeslong labor shortage that's been impacting the U.S. agricultural industry. Between 1950 and 2000, the number of hired farm laborers declined by more than 50%, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Hiring has continued to be a challenge for farm owners into the 2020s. ..."

Giant redwoods: World’s largest trees 'thriving in UK' en masse

Good news! Amazing stuff! Even uprooted trees are capable of adaptation! 😊

Shall we call the UK Giant sequoias country now? 😊

"The trees, which were first brought to the UK about 160 years ago, are growing at a similar rate to those found in their native range in California.

The scientists believe the UK trees are also outnumbering the ones in the mountains of Sierra Nevada.

However, they aren't yet as tall. In California the biggest reach 90m high, but in the UK the tallest is [55m]. ...
Giant redwoods can live for more than 2,000 years, so there's still plenty of time for the UK's trees to catch up.

It's estimated there are half a million redwoods in the UK - this includes the giant redwoods studied (Sequoiadendron giganteum - also commonly called giant sequoias) as well as coastal redwoods and dawn redwoods, both of which were introduced at later dates. But the scientists in the study say they think most of the UK trees are giant redwoods.

By comparison there are [only] about 80,000 mature giant redwoods in their native range in the forests of California. ...
Giant redwoods were first brought to the UK by the Victorians. They were the ultimate botanical status symbol, typically planted in the grand estates of the wealthy. ..."

From the abstract:
"Giant sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are some of the UK’s largest trees, despite only being introduced in the mid-nineteenth century. There are an estimated half a million giant sequoias and closely related coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) in the UK. Given the recent interest in planting more trees, partly due to their carbon sequestration potential and also their undoubted public appeal, an understanding of their growth capability is important. However, little is known about their growth and carbon uptake under UK conditions. Here, we focus on S. giganteum and use three-dimensional terrestrial laser scanning to perform detailed structural measurements of 97 individuals at three sites covering a range of different conditions, to estimate aboveground biomass (AGB) and annual biomass accumulation rates. We show that UK-grown S. giganteum can sequester carbon at a rate of 85 kg yr−1, varying with climate, management and age. We develop new UK-specific allometric models for S. giganteum that fit the observed AGB with r 2 > 0.93 and bias < 2% and can be used to estimate S. giganteum biomass more generally. This study provides the first estimate of the growth and carbon sequestration of UK open-grown S. giganteum and provides a baseline for estimating their longer-term carbon sequestration capacity."

"MIT chemical engineers have devised an efficient way to convert carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, a chemical precursor that can be used to generate useful compounds such as ethanol and other fuels. ..."

From the abstract:
"Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a promising route to up-convert this industrial byproduct. However, to perform this reaction with a small-molecule catalyst, the catalyst must be proximal to an electrode surface. Efforts to immobilize molecular catalysts on electrodes have been stymied by the need to optimize the immobilization chemistries on a case-by-case basis. Taking inspiration from nature, we applied DNA as a molecular-scale “Velcro” to investigate the tethering of three porphyrin-based catalysts to electrodes. This tethering strategy improved both the stability of the catalysts and their Faradaic efficiencies (FEs). DNA-catalyst conjugates were immobilized on screen-printed carbon and carbon paper electrodes via DNA hybridization with nearly 100% efficiency. Following immobilization, a higher catalyst stability at relevant potentials is observed. Additionally, lower overpotentials are required for the generation of carbon monoxide (CO). Finally, high FE for CO generation was observed with the DNA-immobilized catalysts as compared to the unmodified small-molecule systems, as high as 79.1% FE for CO at −0.95 V vs SHE using a DNA-tethered catalyst. This work demonstrates the potential of DNA “Velcro” as a powerful strategy for catalyst immobilization. Here, we demonstrated improved catalytic characteristics of molecular catalysts for CO2 valorization, but this strategy is anticipated to be generalizable to any reaction that proceeds in aqueous solutions."

"Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton walked into a Houston courtroom Tuesday morning without saying anything about the deal he struck with the special state prosecutors that will allow him to avoid a criminal trial and eventually have the felony charges against him dropped.

To make that happen, Paxton agreed to the terms of the deal, called a pre-trial diversion, over the next 18 months.

He'll have to pay more than $270,000 in restitution to the victims related to the state securities fraud charges.

Paxton will also have to perform 100 hours of community service, which Special Prosecutor Brian Wice said may involve spending time at a food pantry or soup kitchen.

The Attorney General will have also to check in with prosecutors virtually every 60 days. ..."

Antarctic Circumpolar Current: How Earth’s most powerful ocean current changed over the past 5.3 million years

Recommendable, but you have to discount the climate change garbage contained in the article!

Fact is we still know so very little about what goes on in our vast oceans not to mention its effects on climate over time! It is actually shocking how little we know about our oceans in the 21st century, it is like terra incognita! This reason alone disqualifies already any Global Warming and Climate Change propaganda and demagoguery!

This study also only scratches in tiny ways the surface of our understanding of oceanology! Anything else is pretense of knowledge!

"The Antarctic Circumpolar Current is the most powerful current system on Earth. It moves 100 times as much water as all the Earth’s rivers combined in a circular current that flows clockwise around Antarctica.

In recent decades the ACC has been speeding up, but scientists have been unsure whether this increase is connected to human-induced global warming.

Now, new research indicates that the ACC slowed down during cold glacial periods in the past and gained speed during warm interglacial times – these speedups also correlate with major losses of Antarctica’s ice.
“The ACC has a major influence on heat distribution and CO2 storage in the ocean,” ..."

"... The Antarctic Circumpolar Current plays an important part in global overturning circulation, the exchange of heat and CO2 between the ocean and atmosphere, and the stability of Antarctica’s ice sheets. An international research team led by the Alfred Wegener Institute and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory have now used sediments taken from the South Pacific to reconstruct the flow speed in the last 5.3 million years. Their data show that during glacial periods, the current slowed; during interglacials, it accelerated. Consequently, if the current global warming intensifies in the future, it could mean that the Southern Ocean stores less CO2 and that more heat reaches Antarctica. The study was just released in the journal Nature. ..."

From the abstract:
"The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) represents the world’s largest ocean-current system and affects global ocean circulation, climate and Antarctic ice-sheet stability. Today, ACC dynamics are controlled by atmospheric forcing, oceanic density gradients and eddy activity. Whereas palaeoceanographic reconstructions exhibit regional heterogeneity in ACC position and strength over Pleistocene glacial–interglacial cycles, the long-term evolution of the ACC is poorly known. Here we document changes in ACC strength from sediment cores in the Pacific Southern Ocean. We find no linear long-term trend in ACC flow since 5.3 million years ago (Ma), in contrast to global cooling and increasing global ice volume. Instead, we observe a reversal on a million-year timescale, from increasing ACC strength during Pliocene global cooling to a subsequent decrease with further Early Pleistocene cooling. This shift in the ACC regime coincided with a Southern Ocean reconfiguration that altered the sensitivity of the ACC to atmospheric and oceanic forcings. We find ACC strength changes to be closely linked to 400,000-year eccentricity cycles, probably originating from modulation of precessional changes in the South Pacific jet stream linked to tropical Pacific temperature variability. A persistent link between weaker ACC flow, equatorward-shifted opal deposition and reduced atmospheric CO2 during glacial periods first emerged during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT). The strongest ACC flow occurred during warmer-than-present intervals of the Plio-Pleistocene, providing evidence of potentially increasing ACC flow with future climate warming."

Multithreading software tweak doubles computer processing speed, halves energy use

Good news, but not the latest news! This could be a breakthrough!

Unfortunately, this work, published in October 2023, has not yet been cited very often, which is not a good sign or is this work overlooked? (Google Scholar: 0, Semantic Scholar: 1 citation).

I believe, multithreading is an old concept and has been widely applied since about the late 1990s.

"...  In a new study, researchers ... demonstrate a method where existing diverse components operate simultaneously to greatly improve processing speed and reduce energy consumption. ...
The researchers’ framework, called simultaneous and heterogeneous multithreading (SHMT), moves away from traditional programming models that can only delegate a region of code exclusively to one kind of processor, leaving other resources idling and not contributing to the current function.
Instead, SHMT exploits the ... heterogeneity – of multiple components, breaking the computational function up to share it among them. In other words, it’s a type of parallel processing. ...
A set of virtual operations (VOPs) allows a CPU program to ‘offload’ a function to a virtual hardware device. During program execution, a runtime system drives SHMT’s virtual hardware, gauging the hardware resource’s ability to make scheduling decisions.

SHMT uses a quality-aware work-stealing (QAWS) scheduling policy that doesn't hog resources, but helps maintain quality control and workload balance. The runtime system divides VOPs into one or more high-level operations (HLOPs) to simultaneously use multiple hardware resources.

Then, SHMT’s runtime system allocates these HLOPs to the task queues of the target hardware. Because HLOPs are hardware-independent, the runtime system can adjust the task assignment as required. ...
They tested the SHMT concept using benchmark applications, and found that the framework with the best-performing QAWS policy knocked it out of the park, with a 1.95X boost to speed and a remarkable 51% cut in energy consumption compared to the baseline method. ...
The researchers say the implications for SHMT are huge. Yes, software apps on your existing phones, tablets, desktops and laptops could use this new software library to achieve some pretty wild performance gains. But it could also reduce the need for expensive, high-performance components, leading to cheaper and more efficient devices. ..."

From the abstract:
"The landscape of modern computers is undoubtedly heterogeneous, as all computing platforms integrate multiple types of processing units and hardware accelerators. However, the entrenched programming models focus on using only the most efficient processing units for each code region, underutilizing the processing power within heterogeneous computers.

This paper simultaneous and heterogenous multithreading (SHMT), a programming and execution model that enables opportunities for “real” parallel processing using heterogeneous processing units. In contrast to conventional models, SHMT can utilize heterogeneous types of processing units concurrently for the same code region. Furthermore, SHMT presents an abstraction and a runtime system to facilitate parallel execution. More importantly, SHMT needs to additionally address the heterogeneity in data precision that various processing units support to ensure the quality of the result.

This paper implements and evaluates SHMT on an embedded system platform with a GPU and an Edge TPU. SHMT achieves up to 1.95 × speedup and  51.0% energy reduction compared to GPU baseline."

Software tweak doubles computer processing speed, halves energy use Existing processors in PCs, smartphones and other devices can be supercharged for enormous power and efficiency gains using a new parallel processing software framework designed to eliminate bottlenecks and use multiple chips at once.

House Democrat Mikie Sherrill (age 54) unveils plan to keep classified docs from Trump

Headline of the day!

Sure, Trump did not leave classified documents in his possession, which he had the authority to declassify, in an unsecured garage next to his house like the senile, demented and corrupt 46th President!

I suppose then Trump needs a ghostwriter like the 46th President to gain access to classified documents?

House Democrat unveils plan to keep classified docs from Trump, Menendez | Just The News "Nobody is entitled or legally obligated to classified briefings – certainly not Trump, even if he is the Republican nominee for president," she continued.

What a smart cookie! Is she smarter than Mistress Kamala, by how much? 😊

Gangs netting up to $3 trillion a year as Southeast Asia human trafficking and transnational organised crime becoming a global crisis, Interpol says

Very recommendable! This is huge! The CNN article is rather vague about the origin of the figure.

Either Interpol is exaggerating quite a bit or transnational organised crime has indeed become a global threat and an extremely lucrative "business" as the Interpol General Secretary Jürgen Stock pointed out.

More awareness about the issue in the general public and businesses and how to prevent this sort of crime around the world would not hurt either!

I also tried Google/Bing search on latest news about Interpol and General Secretary Jürgen Stock (he is actually from my home state Hesse, Germany) and only Bing found other related stories. Surprisingly, Google Search turned up mostly outdated and irrelevant stuff (see screen print below)!

"... Interpol secretary-general Jurgen Stock told a briefing at the global police coordination body's Singapore office. ..."

"Organised crime is at risk of spreading at an epidemic level, with various groups forging alliances across jurisdictions and hiding behind the anonymity offered by the Dark Web and cryptocurrencies.

In an interview with The Straits Times on March 27, Mr Jurgen Stock, secretary-general of Interpol, said the international police organisation has been warning law enforcement agencies of the threat posed by transnational criminal groups.

He said that in recent months, Ecuador and Haiti have come under threat from organised crime. Ecuador, which is being overrun by gangs, saw 7,872 murders in 2023 – the most in the South American country’s history – while the Haitian capital is now being run by criminal groups. ...
Driven by online anonymity, inspired by new business models and accelerated by Covid, these organised crime groups are now working at a scale that was unimaginable a decade ago.” ...
Interpol, which is headquartered in Lyon, France, is in the midst of completing a report on the threat posed by transnational organised crime groups. The report will list 10 syndicates of greatest concern to the 196-member agency. ...
Mr Stock said transnational organised crime has become a key global security threat.

Citing human trafficking as an example, he said what began as a regional crime threat in South-east Asia has now grown into a global crisis with millions of victims. ...
Mr Stock said organised crime is becoming increasingly global in nature, with groups acting across continents and diversifying their criminal activity. The crime groups have significant resources as well. ...
But the Interpol head noted that criminal gangs that started their operations from drug trafficking will continue to remain in the drug market, estimating that it will still contribute 40 per cent to 70 per cent of the gangs’ income.

He said around US$2 trillion (S$2.7 trillion) to US$3 trillion worth of illicit proceeds of crime are channelled through the global financial system each year.

“This gives an idea about the dimension of what organised crime groups are able to gain with their criminal activity,”  ...

A maximum of 2 per cent to 3 per cent of these criminal assets are currently being traced and confiscated by law enforcement agencies, he added. "

"Human trafficking-fueled fraud is exploding in Southeast Asia with organized crime rings raking in close to $3 trillion in illicit revenue annually, the head of Interpol has said in comments that reveal the huge profits being earned by cartels.

One international organized crime group makes $50 billion a year, according to Interpol secretary-general Jurgen Stock, adding that $2 trillion to $3 trillion of illicit money flows through the global financial system annually. To compare, France’s economy is worth $3.1 trillion according to the International Monetary Fund.

While drug trafficking contributes around 40% to 70% of organized crime income, criminal groups are also using those smuggling networks to illegally move humans, arms and stolen products among other things, Stock said.

Driven by online anonymity, inspired by new business models and accelerated by Covid, these organized crime groups are now working at a scale that was unimaginable a decade ago,” Stock told a briefing at the global police coordination body’s Singapore office on Wednesday.

“Today, a bank – or indeed anyone – is less likely to be robbed at gunpoint than via a keyboard by someone on the other side of the world.

What began as a regional crime threat in Southeast Asia has become a global human trafficking crisis, with millions of victims, both in the cyber scam centers and as targets.”

Interpol says its operations in Asia have led to nearly 3,500 arrests and the seizure of $300 million in illegally earned assets across 34 countries since 2021. ...
