Universal Health Coverage Could Save $1 Trillion and 114,000 Lives Every Year | Yale School of Public Health. Really!

When an elite university has delusions of grandeur! Or is it simply old fashioned socialism or a preference for government run healthcare? What about junk science?

These wannabe socialists have never heard of or seen the e.g. long waiting lines or chronic shortages in historic, socialist countries!

Why not introduce more free market competition into the US and other countries' healthcare systems! Why not shorten intellectual property protections? Why not let nurses do more doctor work? Why not reduce burdensome regulations and much more! However, e.g. import of re-import of government price controlled drugs from other countries is not one of them!

"A single-payer universal health care system could cover every American, save more than 100,000 lives a year, and still cost $1 trillion less than the system it would replace, according to a new preprint study led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health. ...

The model identified five major sources of savings: lower pharmaceutical prices, Medicare-level payments to providers, reduced administrative overhead, less fraudulent billing, and fewer avoidable emergency department visits and hospitalizations.
Even under more conservative assumptions about drug prices and fraud reduction, the researchers projected that the savings would reach at least $663 billion a year. Both figures account for an estimated $304 billion in additional spending to meet unmet medical needs, reimburse care that now goes unpaid, and provide universal dental coverage. ..."

From the abstract:
"The US spends more on health care than any other nation, yet tens of millions of Americans are uninsured or underinsured, and coverage retractions enacted in 2025 are widening these gaps.
The misalignment between the for-profit insurance architecture and optimal patient care, together with the inefficiencies of a fragmented system, contributes to both unnecessary costs and preventable mortality.
We update our previous analyses with the most recent data to project the economic benefits and the number of lives saved that would be achieved by single-payer universal coverage, as proposed in the Medicare for All Act.
We estimate that such a system would reduce national health expenditure by $1,041 billion annually. Sources of savings include reductions in administrative overhead, pharmaceutical prices, fraudulent billing, and avoidable emergency care.
Combined with the reversal of recent retractions, universal coverage would save over 114,000 lives annually."

Health-care costs for typical Canadian family will reach over $21,000 this year. Really!

Sometimes middle of the road think tanks use disinformation or are misleading! Did the Fraser Institute miss the point? Most likely!

Sensationalism is not helpful!

This subject of the true cost of government run healthcare has been known and covered for decades! It is an old hat, but reminding does not hurt.

$21,000 (Canadian dollar?) seems to be awfully high as if some miscalculation occurred. General government revenues includes personal and business taxes and other taxes.

Caveat: I did not read the entire study.

"The Price of Public Health Care Insurance, 2026
  • Canadians often misunderstand the true cost of our public health care system. This occurs partly because Canadians do not incur direct expenses for their use of health care, and partly because Canadians cannot readily determine the value of their contribution to public health care insurance.
  • In 2026, preliminary estimates suggest the average payment for public health care insurance ranges from $6,464 to $21,115 for six common Canadian family types, depending on the type of family.
..."

"... Furthermore, health care in Canada is financed through general government revenues rather than through a dedicated tax, which blurs the true dollar cost of the service. ...

However, the reality is that these premiums cover just a fraction of the cost of health care and are paid into general revenue from which health care is funded. ..."

Study in the BMJ: England Records 50-Fold Rise in Number of Children with Gender Dysphoria in a Decade. Really!

Is this not some sort of a self fulfilling prophecy? Very much so!

Or is the definition of gender dysphoria so ambiguous that almost anything goes especially for children and teenagers? You bet!
"... The NHS defines gender dysphoria as a term “that describes a sense of unease that a person may have because of a mismatch between their biological sex and their gender identity.” ..."

Given all the media attention to this subject it is no wonder that young people get confused (aka dysphoria). There is enough public information about this subject to trigger a mania.

Is gender dysphoria diagnosis and treatment comparable to quackery? You bet!

From the abstract:
"Objective
To examine trends in diagnosis of gender dysphoria and related conditions in children and young people attending primary care practices in England.
Design
Longitudinal analysis of electronic primary care records from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) Aurum database linked to hospital and Index of Multiple Deprivation data.
Setting
Primary care practices in England between 2011 and 2021.
Participants
3782 patients aged 0–18 years with a recorded history of gender dysphoria/incongruence and matched comparators with autism spectrum conditions or eating disorder.
Main outcome measures
Incidence rates and prevalence of gender dysphoria/incongruence; prescribing rates for medical treatments; co-occurrence of anxiety, depression and self-harm.
Results
Between 2011 and 2021, incidence rates of recorded gender dysphoria/incongruence increased from 0.14 (95% CI 0.08 to 0.20) to 4.4 (95% CI 4.1 to 4.7) per 10 000 person years, and from 2014 the rate increased more rapidly in recorded females than males. There was no significant association between gender dysphoria/incongruence and area level deprivation.
Of the 3782 children and young people with a record of gender dysphoria/incongruence, 176 (4.7%) were prescribed puberty suppressing hormones; 302 (8.0%) were prescribed masculinising/feminising hormones; and 1994 (52.7%) had a record of anxiety, depression or self-harm. Compared with matched comparators, those experiencing gender dysphoria/incongruence had similar recorded rates of anxiety and higher rates of depression and self-harm.
Conclusions
Recorded prevalence of gender dysphoria/incongruence increased substantially in children and young people between 2011 and 2021, particularly in recorded females. Levels of anxiety, depression and self-harm were high, indicating an urgent need for better prevention and treatment of mental health difficulties in these patients."

How many women in the UK have to endure an agonising wait for years to have breast reconstruction after mastectomy?

Is this not typical for government run healthcare like in the UK with the National Health Service (NHS)!

"Gail Agar waited eight years for breast reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy in 2016 to treat her breast cancer. She is one of several women in Scotland who have experienced prolonged delays. “I just want to feel like a woman again,” says Agar. Breast reconstruction takes more than 12 hours and significant hospital resources, but long waiting periods can cause psychological distress. Jenni Christieson, who has waited three years for breast-reconstruction surgery after losing a breast to cancer, says, "I used to be a salsa dancer but I won't do that any more. I'm so aware of not being looked at.” ..."

"'I've waited eight years for the surgery. Do I still want it?'"

How America became the world leader in pharmaceutical innovation and why to keep big government out of it

How to ruin a dynamic, competitive, and innovative industry to the benefit of our health! Big government!

Increase competition through more imports, reduced intellectual property rights, lower taxes, less regulation etc.!

"... In the 1970s, Europe was the global hub for pharmaceutical innovation.  Fast forward and around two-thirds of new drugs developed in the last decade or so have originated in the United States, compared to just 22 percent from Europe.  ...

America did not become the world’s innovation leader because of government – private companies have long tackled complex health care problems far better than government agencies.

Unfortunately, Democrats and even some Republicans are now pushing the United States to follow Europe and embrace price controls on prescription drugs.  This is a grave mistake.  ..."

The Lancet: The Carbon Cost of Health Care. Really!

What a baloney! This is so absurd!
Propaganda and demagoguery spread by a very prestigious medical journal! Social injustice everywhere! The Global Warming hoax and Climate Change religion on display! The government run National Health Service wants to enforce the climate dogma on its suppliers!

Even inhalers are dangerous!

Anesthesia is dangerous!

The Canadian National Health-Care Scare

Recommendable! Government run health care is a lethal threat! Just look at Canada or even the United Kingdom!

If you are too old in Canada prepare to die, because necessary medical treatment will be denied based on your age unless you travel to the U.S.!

"Their single-payer system is characterized by long waits, equipment shortages, and expensive drugs."

You Thought WARREN'S Health Care Plan Was Bad? Mayor Pete's is Off the R...

Highly recommendable! Almost like Eugenics! The elites would get to decide who lives and who dies!

Medicare is besides Social Security one of the worst socialist government programs in the U.S. Both of them are totally unconstitutional! Both should be repealed and phased out as fast as possible!

Medicare For None

Posted: 5/4/2019

These days, influential politicians of the U.S. Dimocratic (no misspelling) Party are demanding socialist Medicare for All!

First and foremost, like Social Security, Medicare is a totally unconstitutional, socialist program that should have never been passed as law by the U.S. Congress (1965) or should have long been declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. As so often, SCOTUS failed totally to protect the spirit and content U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence! This is one reason why Lyndon B Johnson was such a horrible, socialist president in the footsteps of Franklin D. Roosevelt!

Health insurance for the elderly should have been left foremost with the 50 states as federalism would strongly suggest. State governments would have been free to subsidize health insurance for the elderly as they see fit. Federal government ought to be limited to a supporting role, e.g. block grants to individual states etc.

The one size fits all solution of Medicare for all over 65 was a terrible decision like Social Security! In general, only elderly who can truly not afford health insurance should be helped by government or private organisations.

Unfortunately, socialist programs like Social Security and Medicare have become the gateway for more socialist programs. Welcome Hayek’s Road to Serfdom!

Why Is Veterinary Healthcare So Much Better Than Human Health Care?

Posted: 3/26/2018  Updated: 11/30/2019

Update Of 11/30/2019

Recently (11/16/2019), the MIT Technology Review has dedicated an entire Weekend Reads edition to cover how medical research and treatments for dogs are advancing human medical treatment.

Here is a selection of articles recommended in this newsletter:
  1. “Sick dogs could be key to unlocking mysteries of immunotherapy. People and dogs share some cancer-causing genetic mutations. Now the government is funding an effort to learn from that”
  2. “Pet cloning is bringing human cloning a little bit closer People are copying pets to preserve a physical, and spiritual connection to dead children.”
  3. “A stealthy Harvard startup wants to reverse aging in dogs, and humans could be next Biologist George Church says the idea is to live to 130 in the body of a 22-year-old.”

Why Is It Sometimes Better To Be A Pet Than A Human?

A hyperbolic question, but …

Short answer: Excessive government intervention and control is severely and mostly negatively affecting the health care systems in many Western countries. Unlike veterinary health care, where government regulation and control is fairly lenient compared to human health care. The medical profession has an outsize influence on government to the disadvantage of patients.

Advantages Of Veterinary Healthcare

Benefits of veterinary healthcare compared to human healthcare:
  1. Pet owners are self payers. They are accountable and responsible for all costs incurred
  2. Private veterinary health care insurance has evolved to serve the needs of pet owners
  3. Medical diagnostic and treatment advances in veterinary health care were improving and progressing at higher speed
  4. Possibly, medical advances in veterinary medicine have already or will soon feedback into human health care

Lessons From The VA Health Care Scandal

Date: 7/10/2014

Let me try to summarize my thoughts on this subject as follows:
  1. Big Government run health care does not work, never has! As observed, nobody is responsible for anything. Nobody gets fired, because they are government employees protected by labor unions.
  2. VA health care should be largely and completely privatised.
  3. Veterans deserve to be treated for their injuries etc. suffered during their service in the best possible way until the end of their lives and it should be paid for by government. But a government run health care system is not necessary at all! Whether family members of
  4. That only the VA health care system is capable of treating veterans with their alleged unique needs is a red herring argument. Any of the doctors working at VA health care could be offering their services in the private sector as well. Former military doctors are most likely willing to treat any veteran any time. Why would not private sector doctors be willing to specialize on special needs of veterans like PTSD or brain trauma etc.?

Some Other Notes

Just read that the VA requires annual income reporting for being enrolled in the VA health care system. Now “VA will automatically match income information obtained from the Internal Revenue Service and Social Security Administration”. Since when does a private health insurance require such reporting?
