Detroit Schools pay Students and parents a lot of money to Show Up

This program seems to be insanely expensive and ill conceived!

The current mayor of Detroit is Mary Sheffield (D, age 39) who took office on January 1, 2026. She is a career politician since age 26. Her resume is very thin!

First female (and female black) mayor of Detroit!

"The program launched in January 2026 for high schoolers, offering $100 gift cards for every five-day period of perfect attendance — up to $1,000 over 10-weeks. Middle school parents will now receive $50 gift cards for their children’s perfect attendance under the same five-day structure. ..."

"The Detroit Public Schools Community District is expanding its program [Perfect Attendance Pays] that pays students for perfect attendance.

Middle school students, not just high school students, can earn money this year, Superintendent Nikolai Vitti told Michigan Capitol Confidential in an email. ..."

The US has a new most powerful laser at 2 petawatts, but only for a 25 quintillionth of a second. Next 3 petawatts

Good news! Amazing stuff!

"The ZEUS laser facility at the University of Michigan has roughly doubled the peak power of any other laser in the U.S. with its first official experiment at 2 petawatts (2 quadrillion watts).

At more than 100 times the global electricity power output, this huge power lasts only for the brief duration of its laser pulse—just 25 quintillionth of a second long. ...

The road to 2 petawatts has been slow and careful. Just getting the pieces they need to assemble the system has been harder than expected.
The biggest challenge is a sapphire crystal, infused with titanium atoms. Almost 7 inches in diameter, it is the critical component of the final amplifier of the system, which brings the laser pulse to full power. ...

In the meantime, jumping from the 300 terawatt power of the previous HERCULES laser to just 1 petawatt on ZEUS resulted in worrying darkening of the gratings.
First, they had to determine the cause: Were they permanently damaged or just darkened by carbon deposits from the powerful beam tearing up molecules floating in the imperfect vacuum chamber? ..."

The US has a new most powerful laser - Michigan Engineering News "Hitting 2 petawatts, the NSF-funded ZEUS facility at U-M enables research that could improve medicine, national security, materials science and more."

A view through the titanium-sapphire crystal that helps to transfer power into ZEUS’s laser pulses. At two petawatts, ZEUS is now the most powerful laser in the U.S.

... holds up a laser burn mark on photographic paper in a control room of the ZEUS lab. This test reveals any potentially damaging hot spots in the expanded laser pulse as it enters the compressor that will shrink it into a tiny, intense and powerful laser pulse. The lines come from imperfections in the final amplifying crystal, which must be replaced before ZEUS can reach its full power of 3 petawatts. At two petawatts, ZEUS is now the most powerful laser in the U.S.

Hamtramck Muslim mayor celebrates Trump in campaign stop and endorses him

Good, but old news! This is huge!

"Former President Donald Trump made a short stop Friday afternoon in Hamtramck, where he called it an honor to have the endorsement of Mayor Amer Ghalib who, in turn, described the GOP nominee's visit to the city as historic.

"As you know, President Trump keeps saying that our country is in decline, and the ship is sinking. So sometimes it's wise enough to sail against the wave so we can get to the shore safely under the leadership of President Trump and that's why I endorsed President Trump in this area in Wayne County," Ghalib said at an Oakland GOP outpost for Trump in the city home to the first all-Muslim city council in the U.S. Wayne County is a Democratic stronghold where its diverse population represents the Democratic party's coalition and the divides tearing it apart, including fractures over U.S. foreign policy toward Israel.

But Ghalib, who is also Muslim, was focused on past ruptures in the community with Republicans. "We had a history of disconnect and miscommunication with the Republican Party and the party of common sense. Now we are here to end that disconnect," he said. "And (Trump's) visit today is to show respect and appreciation for our community," Ghalib said.

Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks as he visits a campaign office in Hamtramck, Michigan, U.S. October 18, 2024.

When Trump took the microphone, he promised to end violent conflict abroad. "You know, we all ultimately want one thing. We want peace in the Middle East and we're going to get peace in the Middle East," Trump said. The office where Trump spoke featured signs reading, "PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH." ..."

Several hundreds of thousands of Non-citizen Voting Could Affect Outcome in These 7 Swing States

Mind boggling!

Add to this the enormously flawed and inaccurate voter rolls in many states. I recently blogged here, here about it.

Remember, in Arizona less than 12,000 votes determined the winner in the 2020 presidential elections.

"Noncitizens number in the hundreds of thousands in each of the seven most fiercely contested battleground states expected to decide the Nov. 5 presidential election, and research suggests more than 1 million of them could vote nationally if past voting patterns continue. ...

Of the seven battleground states,
Georgia has the largest number of adult noncitizens at 787,588 ...

North Carolina follows with 726,079 noncitizens, ...

The third highest number of noncitizens in a battleground state is
Arizona, with 611,717 ages 18 or older. ...

Pennsylvania has 516,123 voting-age noncitizens ...
Michigan has 271,138.
Nevada is next with 258,736 and
Wisconsin, with 129,600, has the smallest number of noncitizens among the seven swing states ..."

'The right choice': The popular Democratic Muslim mayor of Hamtramck (Michigan) endorses Trump

The ship of the Dimocratic Party is sinking!

"The Democratic mayor of the only American city entirely governed by Muslims has endorsed President Donald Trump, signaling possible trouble for Kamala Harris and highlighting the fragility of leftists' supposed intersectional coalition.

Amer Ghalib, the mayor of Hamtramck in the swing state of Michigan, announced Sunday that he is backing the Republican candidate, stating, "I know [Trump] is a man of principles. ..."

The parents of a teenager who killed four classmates at his high school in Michian were each sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison

In principal, parents should be held accountable when their underage child commits a murder with a gun. If you have a gun at home with children, then you have automatically increased responsibility and accountability!

However, the circumstances of each case matter a lot.

Some reports suggested that the parents ignored warning signs about the mental condition of their son.

Beware that enemies of he Second Amendment will do all they can to exploit this tragedy as usual!

Caveat: I am not familiar with the details of this case.

According to Wikipedia: "Crumbley's parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, were charged on December 3, 2021, with involuntary manslaughter for failing to secure the handgun used in the shooting. After failing to appear for their arraignment, the parents were the subjects of a manhunt by the U.S. Marshals; they were caught and arrested in Detroit on December 4."

"James and Jennifer Crumbley, who were each convicted of four counts of unintentional homicide, are the first parents of a school shooter to be held directly responsible for their child’s fatal attack. Both said that they didn’t know about their son’s troubles or plans. Ethan Crumbley is serving life in prison after pleading guilty to four counts of murder in the 2021 killings at Oxford High School about 40 miles north of Detroit. Prosecutors in other states recently charged several parents with crimes related to their children’s shootings but didn’t directly blame them for the attacks."

Michigan has a new cash transfer program Rx Kids will begin payouts during pregnancy offering $7,500 distributed over the course of a year

A serious case of vote buying and/or stimulating population growth?

Why not $10,000 or more! Don't be so stingy! Caution: satire! So far only 444 families are enrolled and roughly $1,482 were paid out per family.

The new program is named as if it was some medication, i.e. "Rx"!

"Interrupting Parental Poverty  [Really!]
Cash aid will be soon distributed to every new mother in Flint, Michigan—with the hope of improving early childhood outcomes.  ...
The details: The cash transfer program, Rx Kids, will begin payouts during pregnancy to encourage prenatal care; $7,500 in cash aid will be distributed over the course a year."

From the program's website:
"More potent than any prescribed pill, Rx Kids aims to improve health, hope, and opportunity. Science demonstrates the lifelong consequences of early adversity but also the promise of science-based, community-driven solutions. For many families, income plunges, and poverty spikes right before a child is born and remains high throughout the first year. Built on the tremendous success of the expanded Child Tax Credit, which cut child poverty to its lowest level in recorded history, and in line with global evidence, Rx Kids boldly reimagines how we care for each other by walking alongside families during the challenging time of pregnancy and infancy."

A brief history of Dearborn, Michigan – the first Arab-American majority city in the US

Recommendable! Caveat: I did not have the time to read it carefully!

Is America still a melting pot?

"Dearborn, Michigan, is a center of Arab American cultural, economic, and political life. It’s home to several of the country’s oldest and most influential mosques, the Arab American National Museum, dozens of now-iconic Arab bakeries and restaurants, and a vibrant and essential mix of Arab American service and cultural organizations.

The city became the first Arab-majority city in the U.S. in 2023, with roughly 55% of the city’s 110,000 residents claiming Middle Eastern or North African ancestry on the 2023 census. ...
Dearborn owes much of its growth to automotive pioneer Henry Ford, who began building his famous River Rouge Complex in 1917. Migrants from the American South alongside immigrants from European and Arab countries settled Dearborn’s Southend neighborhood to work in the auto plant. ..."

Mother Jennifer Crumbley Found Guilty of Manslaughter in Son's Michigan School Shooting. Trial of the father next

Good news! Guns in the wrong hands ...

Any parent who buys or gifts a handgun to their child is automatically assuming much more responsibility and accountability! Same goes for parents keeping their own gun at home while raising a a child.

Generally, the Second Amendment comes with great responsibility and accountability for anyone owning or carrying a gun!

"This is the first time a parent has been convicted of homicide in connection with such an attack. Jennifer Crumbley’s son, Ethan, now 17, pleaded guilty to four counts of murder and is serving life in prison for killing four students at his high school in 2021. Her husband, James, faces the same charges in a separate trial next month. Some legal experts cautioned that the case could open the door to charges against parents whose children use other deadly items around the house, like a baseball bat, while others said it wouldn’t necessarily open the floodgates because the claims are difficult to prove. Gun control groups praised the move as a way to make parents aware of the dangers of having unsecured weapons at home."

75% of adults (university students and health care workers) have hidden infectious illness to work, travel, or socialize, surveys suggest

A bit alarming, if not troubling! Despite higher education! Every wondered why you get sick? Here is an answer.

"Up to 75% of adults have concealed an infectious disease from others in order not to miss work, travel, or social events, according to a new study in Psychological Science.

The article, by researchers at the University of Michigan, is based on four studies and surveys given to 4,110 survey participants. All surveys were given after March 2020, when the COVID-10 pandemic began, and initial survey participants included 399 university healthcare employees.

Only 5% of participants across all studies said they had concealed a COVID-19 infection.

85% of students concealed illness
In the first study, the researchers surveyed 399 university healthcare employees and 505 students and asked how often they actively covered up symptoms of infectious diseases from others, came to campus or work without telling others they were feeling ill, or falsified answers to mandatory symptom screening tools that the university had required for anyone using campus facilities.

Eighty-five percent of students reported concealing a contagious illness, as well as 61% of healthcare workers. Only 8% of healthcare workers and 3% of students said they concealed illness due do a university policy requirement. Instead, almost all efforts at hiding were made because of not wanting to miss social engagements, school, or work. ..."

From the abstract:
"People sick with infectious illnesses face negative social outcomes, like exclusion, and may take steps to conceal their illnesses from others. In 10 studies of past, current, and projected illness, we examined the prevalence and predictors of infection concealment in adult samples of U.S. university students, health-care employees, and online crowdsourced workers (total N = 4,110). About 75% reported concealing illness in interpersonal interactions, possibly placing others in harm’s way. Concealment motives were largely social (e.g., wanting to attend events like parties) and achievement oriented (e.g., completing work objectives). Disease characteristics, including potential harm and illness immediacy, also influenced concealment decisions. People imagining harmful (vs. mild) infections concealed illness less frequently, whereas participants who were actually sick concealed frequently regardless of illness harm, suggesting state-specific biases underlying concealment decisions. Disease concealment appears to be a widely prevalent behavior by which concealers trade off risks to others in favor of their own goals, creating potentially important public-health consequences."

Michigan to pay $1.75 million to man who spent 35 years behind bars for crime he didn't do and the perfect crime

What would you do in his situation flush with money?

Hypothetical: This begs the question what is the perfect crime? Successfully pretend you committed a crime, but you have the evidence that you are innocent. Stay in prison for 3-5 years. Have your innocence confirmed and receive $150,000 to $250,000 upon your release from jail. Sounds almost like a good deal or easier said than done. 😊

"... Those who are exonerated based on new evidence qualify to receive $50,000 for each year spent in a Michigan prison. The report noted that the attorney general's office often tries to get out of paying the tab, but Wright was immediately compensated for the inaccurate conviction. ..."

New study reports 1 in 5 adults don't want children, and they don't regret it later. Really!

A little bit shocking! Or is it alarmism and sensationalism?

However, the social phenomenon of childfree adults (for non-medical reasons) could be serious. It has been reported about for decades in Western societies.

One survey does not make a trend! The underlying Michigan survey was conducted in April of 2022. What was the impact of the Covid-19?

"Last summer, researchers at Michigan State University reported that one in five Michigan adults, or about 1.7 million people, don't want children and therefore are child-free. Although that number was surprisingly large to many, data has now been confirmed in a follow-up study. ..."

"... Estimates of the prevalence of childfree adults in the United States population vary dramatically. Prior studies have estimated this prevalence at 1.3%–1.8% of ever-married women [23], 5%–9% of women aged 35–44 [24], 10%–20% of non-parent men aged 15–49 [25], 21.6% of all adults [2], and 44% of non-parent adults aged 18–49 [26]. Variations in study design make it difficult to compare these estimates or determine whether they are accurate ...
Data used in our replication and exploratory analyses were collected between April 12 and April 22, 2022 as part of the State of the State Survey (SOSS), a recurring public opinion survey of Michigan adults conducted by the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research at Michigan State University. ...
The SOSS dataset includes 1,000 Michigan adults who were matched on gender, age, race, and education to sampling frame based on the 2019 American Community Survey. ..."

From the abstract:
"Childfree individuals, who are also described as ‘childless by choice’ or ‘voluntarily childless’, have decided they do not want biological or adopted children. This is an important population to understand because its members have unique reproductive health and end-of-life needs, and they encounter challenges managing work-life balance and with stereotypes. Prior estimates of childfree adults’ prevalence in the United States, their age of decision, and interpersonal warmth judgements have varied widely over time and by study design. To clarify these characteristics of the contemporary childfree population, we conduct a pre-registered direct replication of a recent population-representative study. All estimates concerning childfree adults replicate, boosting confidence in earlier conclusions that childfree people are numerous and decide early in life, and that parents exhibit strong in-group favoritism while childfree adults do not."

Nearly half of Michigan’s 15 member congressional delegation has overstayed its term limits

Apparently, voluntary term limits for wannabe lifelong career politicians may not work as the experiment in Michigan shows!

"Article 2, Section 10 of the Michigan Constitution says that Michigan’s congressional delegation should “voluntarily” follow voter-approved term limits. This means three terms in a 12-year span in the U.S. House and two terms in a 24-year span in the U.S. Senate.

The people of Michigan approved non-voluntary term limits when they passed Proposal B of 1992. But a 1995 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, U.S. Term Limits v. Thornton, struck down state efforts at term-limiting members of Congress, as the U.S. Constitution offers no such limits. ..."
