In Africa 500 million+ children have accessed routine vaccination since 2000, preventing 4 million+ deaths each year

 Good news!

"Africa’s Monumental Vaccination Gains

The first-ever comprehensive analysis of immunization in Africa has found that 500 million+ children have accessed routine vaccination since 2000, preventing 4 million+ deaths each year, reports the AP.

Key breakthroughs detailed in the analysis, which was published by the WHO and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance:

Measles vaccinations halved deaths from the virus, saving ~20 million lives since 2000, per UN News.

The eradication of wild poliovirus in 2020 was a “historic milestone.”

Meningitis deaths have fallen by nearly 40%.

Maternal and neonatal tetanus have been eliminated in most countries.

In 2024 alone, vaccines saved ~2 million lives. ...

10 countries account for 80% of children who haven’t received any vaccine in the region  ...

Meanwhile, health systems face growing vulnerability amid drastic funding cuts, particularly from the U.S; and global conflicts including the Iran war are disrupting critical supply chains." (Source)

Systemic racism accounts for much of the difference between the average life expectancy of Black and white adults. Really!

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Washington Compost spread again dubious theories or junk science!

Do not black Americans suffer from higher death rates due to smoking? What about violent deaths? What about obesity? The abstract of this study does not mention any of these factors!

"The prevalence of two proteins connected to inflammation and stress supports the “weathering hypothesis” that systemic racism accounts for much of the difference between the average life expectancy of Black and white adults, per a new study published in JAMA Network Open. ..."

From the key points and abstract:
"Key Points
Question
Are elevated cumulative stress across the lifespan and inflammation associated with racial disparities in mortality between Black and White populations?

Findings
Within this longitudinal cohort study of 1554 individuals, greater cumulative stress across the lifespan and higher inflammation partially mediated elevated mortality among Black participants.

Meaning  These findings suggest that heightened cumulative stress and elevated inflammation are plausible mechanisms through which mortality disparities arise between Black and White individuals; there is a continued need for preventions, interventions, and policies that limit stress exposure and its potential impacts on health to reduce racial disparities in mortality.

Abstract
Importance  In the US, Black individuals experience higher mortality risk than White individuals. Greater stress exposure and its biological sequelae are theorized to drive this heightened risk.

Objective
To evaluate whether greater cumulative lifespan stress exposure and elevated inflammation are associated with increased mortality risk among Black compared with White US individuals.

Design, Setting, and Participants
This longitudinal cohort study (St Louis Personality and Aging Network) recruited participants from 2007 to 2011 from the St Louis, Missouri, metropolitan area. ...

Exposure
A latent lifespan cumulative stress factor was derived by applying bifactor confirmatory analysis to assessments of childhood maltreatment, lifetime trauma exposure, research assistant–verified stressful life events, major experiences of discrimination, and indices of socioeconomic status (ie, highest level of self and parental education, and annual household income).

Main Outcomes and Measures
C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were measured from serum collected from 2014 to 2019 following all indices included in the cumulative stress factor. A CRP–IL-6 composite was formed. Mortality and cause of death were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Death Index queried in December 2023. Linear regression and accelerated failure time models estimated mediational effects (ie, direct and indirect associations).

Results
Among 1554 participants (505 Black [32.5%]; 1049 White [67.5%]; 853 [54.9%] female; mean [SD] age at baseline, 58.1 [2.9] years), Black individuals had shorter survival times than White individuals (time ratio, 0.937 [95% CI, 0.918 to 0.957]). Cumulative lifetime stress and the CRP–IL-6 composite, which were each higher among Black compared with White individuals, partially mediated the associations between race and mortality, accounting for 49.3% of racial disparities in mortality (indirect associations: serial, b = −0.006 [95% CI, −0.008 to −0.044]; cumulative stress, b = −0.009 [95% CI, −0.017 to −0.002]; CRP–IL-6, b = −0.016 [95% CI, −0.025 to −0.009]).

Conclusions and Relevance
In this cohort study of St Louis adults, heightened cumulative lifespan stress and elevated inflammation were associated with shorter survival among Black participants, suggesting these pathways may represent plausible mechanisms mediating racial disparities in mortality among Black and White US individuals. The findings underscore the need for policies that address structural racism, alongside treatments that reduce inflammation and limit stress exposure to reduce mortality disparities."

Children exposed to extreme heat are less likely to meet basic developmental milestones. Really!

When leftist propaganda and demagoguery obviously stinks and is so stupid!

What about children exposed to extreme cold?

The cited research is a piece of junk science! The study also mentions "lacking access to adequate water and sanitation". Perhaps, these factors and other factors unrelated to climate are more relevant!

"Children exposed to extreme heat are less likely to meet basic developmental milestones than children living nearby in cooler areas, finds a study of 20,000 children published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry; low-income children are especially vulnerable. NPR Goats and Soda"

From the abstract:
"Background
Increasing evidence suggests that climate change [???], along with its cascading impacts on ecosystems, societies, and communities, has significant effects on both physical and mental health. However, less is known about how exposure to excessive heat early in life may influence the development of foundational skills that shape lifelong developmental trajectories. ...

We found that children exposed to average maximum temperatures above 32°C were less likely to be developmentally on track compared to those exposed to cooler temperatures ... Subgroup analyses revealed that the negative impacts were particularly severe for children in economically disadvantaged households and urban areas, and for those lacking access to adequate water and sanitation.

Conclusions
... emphasizing the need for policies and interventions that enhance preparedness, adaptation, and resilience to support human development in an rapidly warming world [???]."

The U.S. has a much higher suicide rate among older adults than Mexico or Canada, which have stricter gun laws. Really!

Junk journalism again spread by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health!

However, if the upward trend of suicides by older Americans (see chart below) is confirmed, then this is a serious issue. However, I suspect something changed in how this statistical data is collected, which may have contributed to this trend. Or in other words, older data may not be comparable to newer data. I don't have the time to investigate.

Maybe older Canadians and Mexicans e.g. use other means of suicide? How reliable are the suicide statistics of Mexico and Canada? How often are what appears to be a natural death are actually a sort of suicide by other means (e.g. not taking critical medications etc.)?

"Firearm Suicides Among Older Americans

Gun suicides among Americans ages 70+ have risen steadily from 2009 to 2023, claiming 63,836 lives over that period, finds a new analysis of CDC data.
The trend worries researchers, as the demographic makes up a growing share of the U.S. population.

Behind the uptick: A range of factors impacting older people: severe illness, isolation, lack of mental health support, financial pressures, and easy access to firearms.

The U.S. has a much higher suicide rate among older adults than Mexico or Canada, which have stricter gun laws

Most at risk: Older white men in rural areas.

Possible interventions: Doctors can do more to assess their older patients’ mental health and connect them to resources, say advocates. Gun sellers can also provide screening and resources."

"The Heritage Foundation urged the FBI to add a new designation to its list of domestic violent extremist groups for Transgender Ideology-Inspired Violent Extremism, claiming violence from trans people and allies is increasing, although trans people make up less than 1% of mass shooters and are much more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violence ..."

Trump Links Autism With Tylenol use by pregnant women

That a US President mentions a single, specific drug in public statements like this is already a little unusual!

President Trump forgot to mention the safer alternatives for Tylenol available to pregnant women!

Even the lefty Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health admits "An Environmental Health article in August that analyzed 46 previous studies found 27 had significant links between prenatal acetaminophen use and neurodevelopmental disorders.".

However, these lefties could not resist to qualify their admission by dubiously stating "However, study co-author Ann Bauer, a University of Massachusetts epidemiologist, told NPR the U.S. government “may be jumping the gun,” adding: “I think those of us in the research community would like to see stronger evidence [???].”" How much stronger evidence do people suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome need for a warning of pregnant women?

From the abstract:
"Background
Acetaminophen is the most commonly used over-the-counter pain and fever medication taken during pregnancy, with > 50% of pregnant women using acetaminophen worldwide. Numerous well-designed studies have indicated that pregnant mothers exposed to acetaminophen have children diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), at higher rates than children of pregnant mothers who were not exposed to acetaminophen.

Methods
We applied the Navigation Guide methodology to the scientific literature to comprehensively and objectively examine the association between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and NDDs and related symptomology in offspring. We conducted a systematic PubMed search through February 25, 2025, using predefined inclusion criteria and rated studies based on risk of bias and strength of evidence. Due to substantial heterogeneity, we opted for a qualitative synthesis, consistent with the Navigation Guide’s focus on environmental health evidence.

Results
We identified 46 studies for inclusion in our analysis. Of these, 27 studies reported positive associations (significant links to NDDs), 9 showed null associations (no significant link), and 4 indicated negative associations (protective effects). Higher-quality studies were more likely to show positive associations. Overall, the majority of the studies reported positive associations of prenatal acetaminophen use with ADHD, ASD, or NDDs in offspring, with risk-of-bias and strength-of-evidence ratings informing the overall synthesis.

Conclusions
Our analyses using the Navigation Guide thus support evidence consistent with an association between acetaminophen exposure during pregnancy and increased incidence of NDDs. Appropriate and immediate steps should be taken to advise pregnant women to limit acetaminophen consumption to protect their offspring’s neurodevelopment."

The climate crisis killed Thousands in Mongolia in their gers/yurts this winter. Really!

Another example of junk journalism by Johns Hopkins University!

How extreme was this winter in Mongolia really?

Is it not very unfortunate that so many Mongolians still live in gers/yurts?

"Some 7,000 people in Mongolia have died this winter due to air pollution, caused by the coal that provides 70% of the nation’s energy and warms most homes.

Raw coal smoke contains carcinogenic particles, and the briquettes introduced by Mongolia’s government can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
Citizens regularly suffer from respiratory diseases, liver and lung cancers, asthma, and flu.

By February, there had been 811 deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning

The climate crisis has exacerbated Mongolia’s pollution problem, as extreme winters are killing off animals that have supported nomadic herding families, forcing them into cities.

There they construct gers: circular tents with central stoves that feed out through a chimney in the roof. More than 50% of Mongolia’s population live in gers; each household burns ~50 pounds of coal daily in winter."

People who have microplastics or nanoplastics embedded in fatty plaques in their blood vessels had a 4.5X greater risk of heart attacks, strokes, or death. Really!

We have been using plastics for how many decades? We should be all dead by now!

How did they find otherwise comparable patients with "no evidence of MNPs [Microplastics and nanoplastics]". Seems very dubious!

Alert: Plastophobia is a serious disorder. Please seek immediate medical help! (Caution: satire)

"People who have microplastics or nanoplastics embedded in fatty plaques in their blood vessels had a 4.5X greater risk of heart attacks, strokes, or death over a three-year period than patients who were plastic-free, according to a small study published in NEJM today. STA"

From the abstract:
"Background
Microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) are emerging [???] as a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease in preclinical studies. Direct evidence that this risk extends to humans is lacking.
Methods
We conducted a prospective, multicenter, observational study involving patients who were undergoing carotid endarterectomy for asymptomatic carotid artery disease. The excised carotid plaque specimens were analyzed for the presence of MNPs with the use of pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, stable isotope analysis, and electron microscopy. Inflammatory biomarkers were assessed with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunohistochemical assay. The primary end point was a composite of myocardial infarction, stroke, or death from any cause among patients who had evidence of MNPs in plaque as compared with patients with plaque that showed no evidence of MNPs.
Results
A total of 304 patients were enrolled in the study, and 257 completed a mean (±SD) follow-up of 33.7±6.9 months. Polyethylene was detected in carotid artery plaque of 150 patients (58.4%), with a mean level of 21.7±24.5 μg per milligram of plaque; 31 patients (12.1%) also had measurable amounts of polyvinyl chloride, with a mean level of 5.2±2.4 μg per milligram of plaque. Electron microscopy revealed visible, jagged-edged foreign particles among plaque macrophages and scattered in the external debris. Radiographic examination showed that some of these particles included chlorine. Patients in whom MNPs were detected within the atheroma were at higher risk for a primary end-point event than those in whom these substances were not detected (hazard ratio, 4.53; 95% confidence interval, 2.00 to 10.27; P<0.001).
Conclusions
In this study, patients with carotid artery plaque in which MNPs were detected had a higher risk of a composite of myocardial infarction, stroke, or death from any cause at 34 months of follow-up than those in whom MNPs were not detected. ..."

Increases in U.S. life expectancy forecasted to stall by 2050, poorer health expected to cause nation’s global ranking to drop. Really!

What a laughable and ridiculous forecast in the age of AI!

If life expectancy is indeed to stall in the next 25 years or so than it will most likely happen across the world due to reaching a temporary maximum and/or limits or a slow down in medical progress. Life expectancy though will reach most likely a significant higher level than today!

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health: America’s Covid-19 lasting Hangover. Really!

Why would it return to pre-Covid-19 levels given the Russo-Ukrainian War, price inflation, Arab terrorism against Israel, a senile, demented and corrupt 46th President and so on!

Single year comparisons are dubious at best! Perhaps 2018 was a particularly dry year (in terms of alcohol consumption). It is better to use e.g. an average of several years!

"Drinking in the U.S. increased sharply during the pandemic and still hasn’t returned to pre-COVID-19 levels, according to an Annals of Internal Medicine study published today.
Americans who reported drinking heavily increased to 6.29% in 2022, up from 5.1% in 2018.

69.3% said they had consumed alcohol in the past year, up from 66.34% in 2018.

6.45% of women reported having drunk heavily, while the men’s reported rate was 6.12%.
The Quote: “People assumed this [drinking] was caused by acute stress, like what we saw with 9/11 and Katrina, and typically it goes back to normal after these stressful events are over,” said principal investigator Brian P. Lee. “But that’s not what we’re seeing.”"

From the abstract:
...
Objective: To determine whether increased alcohol use during the pandemic (2020 vs. 2018) was sustained after the pandemic (2022).
Methods: This was a population-based study using cross-sectional data from serial nationally representative surveys of adults aged 18 years or older who participated in the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2018 to 2022.  ....
Findings: The study included 24 965 respondents from 2018, 30 829 from 2020, and 26 806 from 2022.
Compared with 2018, there were absolute increases in any alcohol use in 2020 (2.69% [95% CI, 1.28% to 4.10%]) and 2022 (2.96% [CI, 1.58% to 4.33%]). Numerical increases in any alcohol use occurred in 2020 and 2022 versus 2018 among all subgroups."

U.S. Elections: An Existential Crossroads for Global Health Policy. Really!

Hysteria and alarmism from the elite Johns Hopkins University! Lousy propaganda and demagoguery!

"The 2024 U.S. elections will shape the future of global health policy, determining whether America will continue to provide crucial leadership to advance global health, according to four members of CUGH’s Advocacy and Communications Committee.

Backstory: The U.S. has long played a leading role in global health governance, from the WHO’s establishment in 1948 to the launch of PEPFAR in 2003.
But that changed after the 2016 election ...
Elections’ impact:
The Trump Administration prohibited foreign assistance for reproductive health services, withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement, and, during the COVID-19 pandemic, sought to withdraw from the WHO.

Subsequently, the Biden Administration walked back those decisions, seeking to restore U.S. leadership in global health.
High stakes: The future of the nation’s leadership in global health hangs in the balance of this election—and global health stakeholders should raise awareness of candidates’ global health positions for voters, argue the authors."

Abortion prevents child abuse and neglect by substance using mothers. Really!

Absurd coming from an elite university!

Women are called "pregnant people"! Disgusting gender ideology!

Substance using women ought to seek help or should be helped before they become pregnant. Why not adoption instead of abortion?

"At least 210 women were charged with pregnancy-related crimes since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022—more than in any other 12-month period since 1973, Pregnancy Justice reports; in most of the cases, women were accused not of violating abortion bans, but of child abuse, neglect, or fetus endangerment. Newsweek"

"... While state actors have used various justifications for criminalizing pregnancy, the overwhelming majority of cases rely on substance use allegations, usually as a basis for charging pregnant people with criminal child neglect or endangerment. With substance use and pregnancy as an entry point, prosecutors have employed fetal personhood to argue that a wide range of criminal laws should be interpreted to reach the context of pregnancy. More than half of states have laws that require reporting to family regulation authorities related to people’s use of alcohol or drugs during pregnancy and/or define alcohol or drug use during pregnancy as civil child abuse or neglect. ..."
