Truman's ultimatum regarding Hiroshima

Probably, not many people know that the U.S. warned Japan that if Japan would not surrender the most devastating weapon mankind had ever known would be unleashed!

E.g. Japanese women were drilled to kill U.S. soldiers during an invasion of Japan with pointed bamboo spears.

Atomic Bombs On Hiroshima & Nagasaki

The first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 8/6/1945 was certainly justified. The arguments for it are well known and generally well accepted (so I will not repeat them here).

Whether it was justified to drop a second atomic bomb within only three days of the first atomic bomb on 8/9/1945 is questionable. U.S. President Harry Truman probably should have intensified the warnings to the Japanese government & people and waited at least a week before dropping the second bomb. I do not believe that e.g. the already weakened Japanese air defenses at that time would have had the capability to prevent a second drop had it been a few days later.

The horrors of the first bomb probably should have been given more time to sink in.
