Democracy in Latin America: Peru arrests president after coup attempt, Guatemala sentenced ex President to 16 years in prison for graft

Good news! Without knowing all the details of these two cases, I guess there is some positive progress to note!

"Peru swore in a new president on [12/7/2022] after a day of political drama that saw leftist leader Pedro Castillo arrested after his ousting from office in an impeachment trial following his last-ditch bid to cling to power by dissolving Congress.

Ignoring Castillo's attempt to shut down the legislature by decree, lawmakers moved ahead with a previously planned impeachment trial, with 101 votes in favor of removing him, six against and 10 abstentions."

"A Guatemalan court on [12/7/2022] sentenced both former President Otto Perez and his vice president, Roxana Baldetti, to 16 years in prison each in a graft case years after explosive corruption revelations forced the two out of office early and into prison."
