Food for thought! There is no doubt that euthanasia is controversial in more than one way!
It may very well be that Canada has one of the most permissive euthanasia laws in the world.
From a classical liberalism perspective, every adult individual should have the right to commit suicide for whatever reason. Any assistance to suicide becomes an issue. Like with capital punishment for innocent individuals, an individual in a moment or phase of serious despair may want to commit suicide, but is happy later for being still alive and perhaps even regretful for having had suicidal thoughts.
To what extent can doctors actively or even passively be involved or assist to violate their Hippocratic Oath? Who wants to be Doctor Death, a pervert maybe? Can a doctor even prescribe or provide a suicide pill to an individual and it is then up to the individual to commit suicide?
Will euthanasia cases be properly registered and reported in statistics concerning causes of death etc.? Will they be reviewed by independent auditors or commissions?
"Euthanasia accounted for more than 10,000 deaths in Canada in 2021, up by about one-third from the previous year, The Associated Press reported on August 11. ...
The number of people dying by euthanasia in Canada is unclear because euthanasia is recognized as a “manner” of death, not an underlying cause. Two Canadian provinces—Ontario and Quebec—explicitly instruct doctors not to indicate on death certificates that people died from euthanasia, and Canada’s national statistical agency says the statistics enumerate the “underlying cause of death,” not euthanasia. ..."
In 2019, suicide was listed as the ninth leading cause of death in Canada, according to Statistics Canada. It is unclear whether euthanasia is included in that number.
