Why is India buying Russian oil a good thing

For at least following reasons:

1. Russia becomes more dependent on India and less dependent on China
2. It dampens, if not prevents global oil price surges and/or major fluctuations. In other words, it may well stabilize global oil prices and production
3. It may even lower global oil prices to the benefit e.g. of Western countries
4. Not least, the Indian people and businesses will be able to obtain reliable energy at probably more moderate costs.
