What a story! The would-be assassin was 45 years old at the time and four times married!
Life is stranger than fiction!
The two news article below are contradictory with regards to did she repent or not. Supposedly, her life was a series of contradictions like her trial defense.
"... His would-be assassin was Sara Jane Moore, a middle-aged mother and sometime FBI informer with connections to local radical groups. The previous day her revolver and 113 rounds had been confiscated by police after she threatened to test Ford’s security. She simply bought another [gun] from a gun dealer. ...
Oliver Sipple, a decorated former marine, was in the crowd and grabbed her arm, sending a second shot off target. ... Sipple, who later received a letter from the president, said, “I’m not a hero, I’m a live coward”, though in the ensuing publicity he was outed as gay and was disowned by his parents. ...
After three years [in 1978] she broke out [of prison] by scaling a 4m fence topped with barbed wire with another inmate; they were recaptured within four hours. ...
Moore was released on parole in 2007, having served 32 years, but remained unrepentant about her attempt to assassinate the president. “That’s the one regret I have, that it was not successful,” she said. She married Philip Chase, a clinical psychologist, and settled in Tennessee after his death in 2018. ..."
"Moore fired two shots at Ford outside the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, missing the President by inches with the first shot from a .38 caliber pistol. She was tackled by Marine Oliver Sipple during the second shot.
After her arrest, Moore revealed she was previously an FBI informant, which the agency confirmed.
She was released on parole in 2007, later saying she had been caught up in the radical political movements that were common in California in the mid-1970s [this does not sound very credible, she was 45 years old at the time]. In a 2009 interview, she said, “I’m very sorry that it happened. … I’m very happy that I did not succeed.”"
