Another example of a nutty professor! The author is Mary Ellen O'Connell,
Professor of Law and International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame.
It appears, the left is trying to make an argument of extrajudicial killing against President Trump's use of deadly force. E.g. the French state owned France 24 media outlet has tried this the last two days (see my blog posts here, here). President Macron is sleeping at the switch!
President Trump has declared the individuals involved with illegal drug trafficking as part of organised crime to be terrorists. Well these criminals are armed to the teeth and act as paramilitaries when necessary and pose a serious threat to governments in Latin America.
About 48,000 Americans died in 2024 due to synthetic opioid addiction. Thus, to use of deadly force against drug smugglers might be a necessary deterrent against greedy mass killers!
Then we have state sponsors of this massive illegal drug trafficking into the US like China, Venezuela.
"The U.S. government is justifying its lethal destruction of a boat suspected of transporting illegal drugs in the Caribbean as an attack on “narco-terrorists.”
But as an expert on international law, I know that line of argument goes nowhere. Even if, as the U.S. claims, the 11 people killed in the Sept. 2, 2025, U.S. Naval strike were members of the Tren de Aragua gang, it would make no difference under the laws that govern the use of force by state actors. ...
Domestic U.S. legal issues aside – and concerns have been raised on those grounds, too – the killings in the Caribbean violated the human right to life, an ancient principle codified today in leading human rights treaties. ..."
