"... On 28 August 2024, Zhang Zhan was detained, and later formally arrested and placed in Shanghai’s Pudong Detention Centre following her reporting on human rights abuses by the Chinese regime. For the past year, the journalist has been cut off from the outside world, and almost all information about her whereabouts has been kept secret to prevent the international community from taking action against the appalling conditions in which she is being held.
Imprisoned for reporting on COVID-19
Zhang was first arrested on 14 May 2020, while covering the early stages of the Covid-19 outbreak in the city of Wuhan. She had posted more than 100 videos on social media documenting the effects of the pandemic before her arrest, and seven months later she was sentenced to four years in prison. Throughout her first imprisonment, RSF campaigned for her release and warned about the mistreatment she was subjected to in prison. During her early months of detention, Zhang Zhan nearly died after going on a total hunger strike to protest her mistreatment. Prison officials forcibly fed her through a nasal tube and sometimes left her handcuffed for days. ..."

RSF urges the international diplomatic community to immediately mobilise to ensure her safety and demand her release from prison."
