Should the Communist Party of China decide to invade Taiwan, someone yesterday commented this could become China's Vietnam!
In my opinion, one of the most powerful defenses for Taiwan is the credible threat of scorched earth should China invade. Destroy all infrastructure and businesses (e.g. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company TSMC), basically leave only life essentials like water, electricity, and telecommunication in tact.
