Erosion of Health Care’s ‘Sanctity’ in regions with military or armed conflicts

"2023 is poised to be a record-breaking year for attacks on health workers and facilities, amid the “quickening pace” and growing “severity of attacks” on health sectors in multiple conflict zones. 

While the ways health care is targeted varies from conflict to conflict, the end result is the same: “The sanctity of health care is less and less respected,” says WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris. 

International focus has been on the crises facing health facilities in Gaza over recent months, but the problem is global: 

In Sudan, one recent study finds that only a third of the hospitals in the nation’s conflict zone are functioning. Meanwhile, medical workers have fled, essential health services have been disrupted, and medical warehouses face military occupation. 

In Ukraine, health systems have endured "widespread and systematic attacks,” and in Russian-occupied regions, doctors are threatened and patients are coerced to change their nationality in order to receive care, according to a new report from Physicians for Human Rights. 

And in Syria, where attacks on hospitals have been “wanton and intentional” since the ongoing civil war broke out in 2011, 601 separate attacks on medical facilities have now been confirmed. "
