I don't think this was a smart or wise decision by Facebook/Meta! It is almost a medieval or superstitious decision!
Face recognition is here to stay! Like all technologies it can be used for good and evil!

Facebook even gives a nice example in their announcement, which people this shutdown will hurt:
"... This change will also impact Automatic Alt Text (AAT), which creates image descriptions for blind and visually-impaired people. After this change, AAT descriptions will no longer include the names of people recognized in photos but will function normally otherwise. ..."
